Alaska Airlines joins the oneworld alliance early

In February, Alaska Airlines announced its intentions to join the oneworld alliance.  It will become the 14th full member.

According to a oneworld announcement yesterday, it now looks like the airline is choosing to expedite the process and hopes to become a full oneworld member by the end of the year. This is a good 6-8 months earlier than expected.

Because of the existing British Airways / Alaska partnership, covered in this article, you are gaining less than you think from their entry into oneworld.

Alaska Airlines joins oneworld early

It is already possible to spend Avios on Alaska.  The problem is that you only can book by calling British Airways as it is not integrated into ba.com.  This should change once Alaska joins oneworld fully.

The real benefit is from tier points.  Whilst you currently earn Avios when flying with Alaska, you do NOT earn British Airways Executive Club tier points.  This will now change.

British Airways Executive Club Silver and Gold members will also get access to the full range of oneworld benefits when flying with Alaska, including lounge access, priority check-in, baggage, boarding and preferred seat selection.

Members of other oneworld frequent flyer programmes have more to gain from this announcement than Executive Club members, as it will open up Alaska award inventory to them for the first time.

    Hi All, looking for 4 club seats to Cancun on BA over Xmas using 2 * 241 vouchers. Scare availability over Xmas as you can imagine, so is it an option for me to book these flights for say August and then hope they get cancelled and then get BA to book me for my preferred dates over Xmas?

    If so, only problem is I think Cancun flights are running right now as Cancun is open to tourists and so my August (or whatever) flights probably won’t get cancelled by BA?

    Thanks!

    * Scarce!

    If I book via an agent, can I still cancel and claim voucher via Ba.com?
    Or, am i not eligible?

    The other benefit is flying from Seattle if on AA. There isn’t an AA lounge as it’s a major hub for Alaska. Unless flying BA (which has its own lounge) you don’t get access to the Alaska lounge; so I’m happy!

    I plan to use a BA companion Voucher for trip to USA In Oct 21 if business seats become available. If I have to cancel due to the virus still being out of control in the USA (thanks Donny) will I have all of my hard earned Avios returned (I’ve had a cunning plan) and fees/taxes less cancellation fee returned? Can’t find any mention of return of Avios. Voucher runs out in Oct. Also, if BA cancel the flight will my companion voucher still be expired? Thank you.
