    I know this is probably more relevant for Rhys’s article tomorrow on shorthaul routes… but HFPers do like to be ahead of the game. SKG has just been extended far into the winter season (currently at least until Jan/Feb) for the first time in forever. Plenty of Avios availability if anyone wants to plan a winter break.

      You’re the man Nick. Thanks for that, it has been almost a decade since it was switched from year-around to seasonal. The fact that it’s moved to LHR as well make it a much better option than before which wasn’t much superior than what the low costs carriers offered.

    Possibly of interest but AA is staying in LHR T5 until at least March next year.

    Email from BA informing me that my AA flights in early March had been changed to depart and arrive at T5 not T3.

    Sort of expected it but had booked that particular flight so as to try the T3 lounge crawl.

      AA won’t be leaving T5. There was already a plan pre-covid for them to move across permanently in 2023… would make no sense for them to leave next year and come back a while later. If T3 does reopen, their lounge will not.

        Not sure about that. There’s a huge amount of work needed to get AA in T5 alongside a vaguely pre-Covid BA schedule. I don’t think Heathrow or BA are interested in spending that capital at the moment when the bigger picture 3rd runway etc is up in the air. If demand picks up enough for T3 to open for other airlines then AA will be back there as soon as BA’s activity requires something to shift as otherwise you’ve got an even messier split of BA flights.

          There was already a messy split of BA flights, with BA putting point-to-point flights in T3 and flights with more connecting passengers at T5. It might continue to do that whilst factoring in AA flights at T5, some of which are sure to have more connecting passengers than the more leisure oriented routes BA flies from T5.

    So what percentage are these long haul flights up on Octobers schedule? Is this pretty much the same or is it ramping up (slowly) ?

    What chances of the remaining LGW routes being shifted to LHR? The recent moves of BDA and one BGI rotation mean there is very little left. Wouldn’t it be better to consolidate?

      No. Long term strategy – see Rob’s previous articles/comments on slot waivers. If they leave Gatwick, even temporarily, they forfeit all their slots. Much better to keep a few token longhaul flights there until they work out what to do longer term than lose options by default.

    Was thinking of a trip to Dubai. Missed the boat with the half price avios offer, but any recommendations? Minimum stay and hotel/location and activities? Not really considered it before but have a 2-4-1 to use. TIA.

      You must stay in a beach hotel. If budget is an issue, stay in a hotel with an arrangement to use a beach, although that is substantially less attractive. Whole holiday is a bit weird unless you do that.

      The Palm hotels are cheaper but a bit odd – it takes far longer than you imagine to drive on and off the Palm and the hotel beaches usually face inwards so you are on the beach looking at another beach a few hundred metres away.

      The Madinat Jumeirah complex is generally your best bet, or potentially Four Seasons / Mandarin if you don’t have kids. Prices at the moment are a fraction of what they would usually be (the top villas at Madinat are £200/night vs the usual £1000 per night).

    Looking to fly to Costa Rica on 14 Nov, either via redemption or cash. 3 Nov is their first date of resuming flight to this country since March. Still hesitant to book to avoid the hassle of flight being cancelled and hours on hold on the phone to BA. How sure can we be that BA won’t cancel what they are currently selling for Nov?

      You can’t. But some time now into Covid, BA are better able to plan so maybe less chance of cancellation.

    Our flights to Las Vegas for November just got cancelled. Our family live there and this is the 3rd set of flights we’ve had cancelled to visit the family.
