Sainsbury’s cutting weekly Nectar (Avios) bonus offers for some

There have been numerous reports in our daily chat threads recently about a reduction in the value of weekly Nectar bonus point offers to use when shopping at Sainsbury’s.

Each week, Nectar offers bonus points on a number of personalised own-brand Sainsbury’s products via the Nectar app. These can be very generous, and at times the value of the Avios earned outweighs the cost of the product.

The system isn’t ideal, however. It requires the shopper to install the Nectar app on their phone and to remember to go into it each week to activate the current crop of coupons. In my book, this is too much ‘friction’.

It also makes the value in the Nectar scheme too difficult to see. Anyone considering a switch from Tesco is likely to focus on the headline ‘1 point per £1 spent’ number and decide that the scheme is a waste of space. It is hard for Sainsbury’s to promote the value of personalised offers when they are, well, personalised ….

New offers may no longer arrive every week

Sainsbury’s has confirmed to moneysavingexpert.com that it has made changes.

It said:

“We regularly review the promotions available through our Nectar app to ensure customers are always receiving personalised, valuable offers. As part of this process, some offers may be currently unavailable for a small number of customers and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Not all members will receive new offers each week. References to ‘weekly offers’ have also been removed from the app and from the website.

Let’s see where this ends up. If it leads to a greater focus on in-store bonus point offers then it would be fairer to all customers whilst also making the attractions of Nectar more visible.

So no offers for 2 weeks. I moved to Sainsbury’s because of the Nectar offering. Obviously an unstainable bait to get people to switch and then be withdrawn. Thought better of Sainsbury’s tbh. Silly me.

  • Froggitt says:

Be aware that the free midweek deliveries over £100 is stopping next week.

  • Alex says:

Interesting – I got only a handful of offers this week. However an email this morning for a different promotion.

Fill your weekend with up to 10 x points.

Spend £40+ and get 3x points
    Spend £60+ get 5x points
    Spend £80+ get 10x points

Between Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th (my normal shopping days are Friday – Sunday depending)

  • Chris Heyes says:

Looks like back to Tesco for me !
Never left Tesco really I do a online Tesco shop every two weeks around £160 ish
But was trying Sainsburys in between to see if a permanent switch would be a lot more beneficial, even went in store once to see if there was offers instore.
I seem to be getting pathetic offers like 10 points for buying an onion, 10 points a 2pt milk, 20 points fairtrade bananas, a massive 100 points for lamb steaks which cost £0.65p more than Tesco
Sorry Sainsbury but the Tesco points x 3 seem to beat your offers hands down.
    Wont be changing

  • Helen says:

My husband has just received – spend £30 = 3 x points, spend £50 = 5 x points, spend £70 = 10 x points. His shopping at Sainsbury’s is about £5 per week. I do the main shop and have not received this promotion.

  • Craig says:

Three weeks of Hello Fresh using various offers, top up from Alid and then use the £175 Waitrose Amex Plat offer. I’ll see if things improve by then?

  • Ian says:

The main problem with Sainsbury’s is the vast amount of empty shelves. I find it impossible to get everything on my shopping list, there’s always something they haven’t got in stock.

    • Craig says:

Not my experience at all, We’ve been using the saver delivery slots for weeks, £1 a go and what few substitutions there have been are spot on.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

10-20% of items ordered were substituted in the few home deliveries. Stopped after that.
Worst is having to pick each item one by one from outside the door in the cold.

  • Andrew says:

Points will only ever influence where I shop, never determine.

There are too many other influencing factors. Location, parking, time of day, type of messages, where I’ve been before going to the supermarket, what else I plan on doing whilst near the supermarket.

Plus my new car is just 2 weeks old. The parking spaces at the big Tesco are at least a foot wider than the ones at the big Sainsbury’s, or better still… If it’s empty as I drive past, there’s an amazing solo space at Lidl near the fire exit and has an all round kerb than nobody else can park near.

    • Oli says:

Those factors are not relevant for everyone. I never go to the shops, and my online shopping switched from Tesco to Sainsbury’s in January

    • Mike says:

Wow that LiDL parking space sounds amazing

    • Lord Doncaster says:

Never thought I’d hear of someone who shops at both Lidl and Harrods

    • mradey says:

Andrew, you could do with an additional “old banger” so you needn’t worry about parking.
