NEW: Get £120 of Deliveroo credit as an Amex Gold benefit

American Express has launched a great new benefit for holders of the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold credit card.

You will receive £120 per annum of Deliveroo credit. This is a permanent card benefit, not a one-off promotion.

This makes a real difference, I think, to whether you keep Gold after the first free year. It also makes the card a no-brainer for regular Deliveroo users for the first year, when Gold is free.

How does the new Deliveroo benefit work?

Preferred Rewards Gold Cardmembers will receive 2 x £5 Deliveroo statement credits per calendar month, starting immediately.

You need to register for this benefit, but only once. After your initial registration, you will receive the 2 x £5 monthly Deliveroo credits without any further registration required.

Once registered, the £5 credits will be automatically applied to your account by American Express. You obviously need to make payment with your Preferred Rewards Gold card.

You can opt in to this new benefit via the ‘Offers’ tab of your online Amex statement page or in the American Express app.

Any small print?

Only one credit can be used per Deliveroo transaction so you cannot receive £10 back on one order.

If your order is below £5, the credit is capped at the size of the order.

The offer only applies to primary cards, not supplementary cards.

Credits do not roll over from month to month. If you don’t use your 2 x £5 credits in any particular month, they are lost.

New to Deliveroo? Save another £10

If you use my refer-a-friend link of https://roo.it/robertb-6×33 to register, you get 4 x £2.50 discount codes.

What is this benefit worth?

If you are a regular Deliveroo user, you should have no trouble getting the full £120 of value from this offer.

As Preferred Rewards Gold is free for your first year, and £140 per year thereafter, I think this makes a real difference to the maths of whether you keep the card beyond the free first year.

For occasional users, it clearly has less value. That said, a £5 credit may tempt you to use Deliveroo more often.

You can order groceries too

Remember that you can order top-up groceries via Deliveroo in many areas, from stores from Aldi to Waitrose. The £5 credit is valid against this.

Conclusion

We recommend the Gold Card as your ‘best first’ miles and points credit card. This is due to a combination of:

  • no annual fee in Year 1
  • a big sign-up bonus of 20,000 American Express Membership Rewards points, convertible into Avios but also into many non-travel rewards if you decide later that Avios or hotel points are not for you (conditions apply as to who qualifies for the bonus)
  • two free airport lounge passes each year, which gives you an early first experience of how miles and points can help you travel better, and

The new Deliveroo benefit, worth up to £120 per year of statement credits, is a valuable addition. If you regularly order food for delivery then you shouldn’t struggle to get full value from it, whilst other people may value the ability to get £5 discounts on top-up grocery shopping.

Added to the 20,000 Membership Rewards points sign-up bonus (if you qualify) and the two airport lounge passes, and you have an impressive package if you can make the most of it.

Don’t forget to opt in to the new Deliveroo benefit before placing your first order.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold application page is here if you are now tempted to sign up.

Hmmmm seems better than the Addison Lee credit on Platinum to me (since I find Addison Lee is normally almost 10£ more than Uber and only marginally better service). Makes it even more difficult to justify Platinum fee.

    • Optimus Prime says:

+1. I’d rather have Uber credit on my Platinum. And yes, you can request an executive or luxury car via Uber in case you have an allergy to Prius.

  • YC says:

Pick up option does not require £10 min spend – a few coffees/juices as your shopping/commuting.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

This sounds very interesting. Now to figure out to “make the most” of it

  • Justin says:

Although it’s a nice addition for those who occasionally use Uber eats it’s rather useless to those who live in quieter areas outside city. I’ll still be canceling my Gold card this year.

I’m hoping this new permanent benefit will path the way for more Platinum Card Credits!

  • Matthew says:

Not in my area…so useless to me!

    • TGLoyalty says:

And you never travel nor leave your area?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

They are expanding rapidly, they’ll be there soon

  • Ben says:

Ive never really looked into it before but those mark ups are outrageous – and what I feel makes it worse is that its hidden. I just looked at Krispy Kreme in store £10.45 for original glazed – on Deliveroo its £14.95 (almost 50% markup) and then add the delivery and service fee and its now £17.69. Surely is should be £10.45 plus a bigger fee to deliver rather than making out the standard price is £14.95.
Not sure I can find value in this offer (although glad to have the option if I ever do use it)

    • Dominic says:

      Some restaurants mark-up, others don’t.

Can’t blame them, given the 30% fee deliveroo charges.

      • KBuffett says:

The 30% is negotiable, especially for larger companies

  • Michael AC says:

More than a third of the UK population lives somewhere that Deliveroo doesn’t operate. The attitude of some companies is a bit frustrating. Like DirectLine offering free Uber Eats which is even less widespread. I get put off by offers like this because it feels like a waste if there’s something I can’t use.

    • Joe says:

But those 1/3 are probably disproportionately unlikely to hold an Amex.

      • Michael C says:

Probably truer in the past than now. I moved out of London into the countryside like a lot of people and now have a lot more disposable income. Had they had more attractive offers outside of cities I’d be more inclined to go for Amex Gold again but if they put their eggs in this basket I won’t bother.

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Also how likely are people in countryside putting thousands on spending on Amex cards?

          • Rhys says:

That John Deere sit on lawnmower doesn’t come cheap 😉

          • Sandra says:

I live in the countryside & like a lot of our friends with high disposable incomes put 1000s on Amex & Creation a year. I don’t replace the John Deere that often though Rhys but they do take Amex at the farm machinery place that sells them & services it annually!

          • Sandra says:

To add to my other comment there are at least 4 major hospitals within 45 mins drive of me and several more slightly longer away – that’s an awful lot of staff, especially senior well paid staff, who are prepared to live in the countryside with a bigger & cheaper house, more land, better schools and drive a bit further to work.

          • Andrew Mc says:

            I do! 🙂

    • Rui N. says:

Which means that almost 2/3 of the population lives somewhere that Deliveroo operates.

    • Alan says:

Yep, Addison Lee have a pretty narrow footprint too. Amex often tend to go for London-centric offers too. I’ve got Deliveroo here but obviously nothing on Plat – can’t see I’d use this much though as £5 just about covers service fees!

      • Optimus Prime says:

IMO Plat should include same benefits and earning rates as Gold (including the 10k bonus for 15k spend every year).

  • Sandra says:

Another one to add to the long list of useless offers making me unlikely to renew in a couple of months. We can’t even get deliveries from takeaways here let alone Deliveroo, a lifestyle choice of living in the sticks away from a city I know but there must be a lot of us spread over the UK!
