The Millennium Hilton New York Downtown hotel is leaving the brand

The Millennium Hilton in New York is leaving the chain on 18th January 2022. This is the hotel next to the famous (and now shuttered) Century 21 discount store.

I only mention this because I have fond memories of it, albeit from 25 years ago when it opened. Recent reports imply a distinct lack of investment. In the late 1990s, however, it was a great hotel. There were some exceptional deals and the hotel was good at upgrading status members – I remember one stay in a lovely junior suite overlooking the World Trade Centre. It even had a pool.

As a glass walled building directly facing the World Trade Centre, it was very badly damaged by the 9/11 attacks. The hotel survived and eventually reopened.

What is slightly odd is that, as the name suggests, it is owned by Millennium Hotels which runs the Millennium and Copthorne brands. This is one of a handful of properties the group owns which is operated under a third party brand. It may well revert to the main Millennium Hotels portfolio – we reviewed the My Millennium loyalty scheme here.

Note that the Millennium Hilton New York One UN Plaza hotel is remaining with Hilton.

Interesting news about Millenium Hilton. I have been tracking it along with others for months and was expecting this. Rates for both cash or points have been consistently artificially low while the vast majority of hotels were stubbornly stuck at their reward cap for almost all nights next July. This led me to suspect the said hotel and some others were leaving Hilton. The others that have shown extremely low pricing are UN Plaza (comment in the article noted) and Fashion District. Hampton Grand Central had been low but pricing recovered of late. Being unconvinced that free breakfast would be reinstated in the States I opted for Homewood Suites. For readers unfamiliar it includes free breakfast. More space plus kitchen works for us as well as the location. It is a few minutes walk from Penn Station providing for maximum airport arrival or departure transfer options, and since we will be headed to both Boston and DC by rail it works well for us. Homewood Suites is consistently rated amongst the top few Hilton options in NYC across multiple review sites so worth considering if location works and you want breakfast regardless of status. Rates are typically 70k points or $280-350 next July.

    • NorthernLass says:

I love Homewood Suites, they are especially good options for families or bigger groups and generally a high standard of accommodation. Outside of cities they tend to have pools and nice outdoor spaces so can be a good alternative to pricier resorts.

I had a booking at the Millenium Downtown for February – I have stayed at the property several times in the past and liked it. However, the recent trip advisor reviews were generally poor. Combine this with no Gold breakfast and I have changed my booking to a Hampton Inn with breakfast included and queen rather than double beds

  • Mike79 says:

Does that mean if you had your booster at the very start of boosters being given you will need to find another booster not too long after that rule comes in or does the 9 month rule not apply to boosters?

    • Abdul says:

      9 months for every vaccine

    • Pete says:

“After a booster shot, the validity of the COVID-19 pass will be extended further without a set limit, because at the moment there is not enough information about the duration of protection from boosters, an EU official said.”

    • Paul Hickey says:

I’ve not had my booster (3rd) vaccine yet. Now I’ll leave it until end of summer 21 to avoid needing a 4th!

    • Ian says:

No, it expires 9 months after your second dose only if you haven’t had a booster.

      • Ben says:

For now its 9 months after the 2nd dose. Till they need to change the rules again. Just like Israel

  • Scandinavian traveler says:

I have a couple of bookings for the Milennium Hilton Downtown in February. What will happen to my booking and will I still earn Hilton points and have diamond benefits?

  • Roberto says:

Lol so it’s like a 9 month subscription then so u can go on holiday?
No real world data on potential future long term side effects either.
    Lovely

    • Paul Pogba says:

I had my second shot in November, I should be good till August 22. I hope by then they’ve given up the fight.

    • Dominic says:

Majority of vaccines were never formally tested on women in the past. How many vaccine scandals can you name whereby women all died / had serious side effects as a result?

    • Supergers49 says:

Carsten Watzl, a professor of immunology at Technical University Dortmund, said the belief that vaccines could have long-term side effects was a common “misunderstanding”.

“Say: I let myself get vaccinated and perhaps next year I will have some grave side-effects. That’s not how it works,” Mr Watzl told the public broadcaster ARD. “The side-effects of a vaccine always appear directly after the vaccination, within a few weeks.”

Health authorities worldwide have come to the same conclusion. For example, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says “serious side effects that could cause a long-term health problem are extremely unlikely following any vaccination”.

    • Rio says:

9 month just this time, should be every 6 month once the process is established 🙂
had my vaccine, had covid, not in risk group so not rushing for any boosters and hopefully with milder variants we can get back to normal soon

  • Geoff 1977 says:

More news to annoy the anti vaxxers. Lovely jubbly. Merry Christmas 😂

    • Geoff 1977 says:

      😂

Merry Xmas Roberto. Bill Gates will be annoyed that you’re not taking the jab and getting microchipped 😂

    • J says:

This doesn’t change a thing for the unvaccinated. Only affects those who have been vaccinated, but not yet had a booster.

    • JerrySignfield says:

      Clearly the opposite!

  • Mike says:

I now need to time my Amex 241, my booster jab and annual leave -this is getting complex

  • NorthernLass says:

So are they saying that once you’ve had the booster there’s no expiry on your vaccination status (until they change the rules again)?
TBH they can microchip me if it means we can travel, they wouldn’t learn anything very interesting from tracking me! Also the best tracking device is your phone, so anyone worried about government surveillance needs to get rid of that 😂

    • icg2201 says:

That made me laugh! They wouldn’t learn anything interesting from tracking me either 🙂

    • Brian says:

I’m pretty sure that very few people are against the jab for microchip reasons – as you say, nobody is interested in more than what they can get from tracking people by their phones. It wouldn’t surprise me if the tracking nonsense was actually made up by the pro-vax brigade to make the anti-vax brigade appear like loonies.

    • Andy says:

There’s no need for expiry once you’ve had the booster because it hasn’t been administered for long. Give it some time and the 9 months, if not 6, will apply to your latest dose

    • JerrySignfield says:

Getting the Vaccines just to travel seems a little extreme.
