News in brief:

New date for the Head for Points Summer party

If you have a ticket for the Head for Points Summer party, you will know that we have had to move the date due to the combined tube and rail strike next Tuesday.

The new date is now Wednesday 6th July – same times, same place (the Renaissance St Pancras hotel, pictured below – you may recognise that staircase ….).

If you bought a ticket, you should have received an email via Eventbrite telling you how to request a refund if you can’t make the new date. If you didn’t receive it, check your spam and, if you can’t find it, email Rhys at rhys [at] headforpoints.com if you want a refund. You don’t need to do anything if the new date works for you.

Refunds for those who requested them will be processed early next week. The tickets that are freed up will be offered to those on the Eventbrite waiting list. The waiting list is currently closed as we are only expecting around 50 tickets to be released and the existing list is longer than that.

It is shaping up to be a great night. Barclaycard, our headline sponsor, is planning a fantastic interactive competition to run in one corner of the hall which will give you an extra chance to come home with some goodies.

Our friends at Malaysia Airlines have generously provided the headline raffle prize – two Business Class flights to Kotu Kinabulu in Malaysian Borneo, via Kuala Lumpur. The winner will also receive a two day package in a premium chalet at the Sutera Mantanani Resort on Mantanani Besar island provided by the Sabah Tourism Board.

Whilst we weren’t planning a big raffle – we normally save that for the Christmas parties – a few of our industry friends have sent us prizes so we’ll be adding those to the list. Our hotel partner Marriott Bonvoy has also lined up three fantastic European weekend breaks as prizes.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 6th …… future strikes permitting!

Our original article on the party is here. We are very grateful to Barclaycard for their financial support for the event. Whilst we only charge £10 for the tickets, the actual cost to us is over £40 per guest.

Free breakfast on Best Western stays this Summer

Best Western has brought back its popular ‘Breakfast On Us’ promotion at its 250 independently owned and run hotels in the UK.

You need to book by 23rd June for stays until the end of 2022.

You can find full details on the Best Western UK website here.

Best Western partners with both Avios and Virgin Points. You can either earn a flat 500 Avios points per stay OR collect Best Western Rewards points as usual and then convert them into Avios as a lump sum.

If Avios is not your preferred scheme, Best Western is also a Virgin Atlantic partner.  You earn 500 Virgin Points per stay.

Best Western Rewards will match your existing hotel or Virgin Atlantic status

We haven’t looked at Best Western in detail for a while, so it’s worth noting that Best Western has a generous status match policy.  If you have status with any other hotel chain, it will be matched.

The form you need to send them can be found on the Best Western website here (PDF).

You can also match Virgin Flying Club status.  A Virgin Silver will receive Best Western Platinum whilst a Virgin Gold receives Best Western Diamond.  Full details are on the Virgin Atlantic website here.

Just hoping that 6 July will not be as hot as Regents Park was yesterday!
Many thanks, Rob, for telling us about the Accor deal there – we could not face walking around the show much, so we got ourselves admitted to the Accor stand early and got three glasses of champagne each, which pretty much used up the value of the points spent on the tickets, even before the meal.

    • Rob says:

Result. Rhys and I were there for lunch yesterday, and I was there on Thursday night with my wife for dinner. Not freebies, we used points.

What you won’t have realised is that the people manning the Accor stand are all very senior staff who got pressganged into it!

      • RussellH says:

Well, full marks to the cheerful young woman with the champagne bottles! I guess that someone more junior would have wanted to check if we were entitled to “another” glass!

Was the menu on Thursday evening distinct from Friday lunch?

        • Rob says:

          Yes. Different chefs each day.

It was probably Nadja who is VP of loyalty partnerships for all of Northern Europe.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

I’m not on the event waiting list as I knew I couldn’t make the date but I could do this one. Any chance of being added to the list?

    • Reeferman says:

      Same here.
It seemed pointless adding myself to a wait list for a date I couldn’t make (will be down in Loire Valley).
Will keep an eye out for any new wait list (and try my luck with a VPN)

  • Maximus says:

Is there any way of checking if I’m on the wait list? I think I put myself down but I’m not sure…

    • Rob says:

You’ll find out next week – you’ll either get an email or you won’t 🙂

Seriously, I have no idea how Eventbrite deals with the waiting list – not sure if they will email everyone and give tickets to the first x to reply, or if it will be done in batches.

On a completely separate note, is there any truth in this that I read yesterday on another loyalty site . . . .

There has been a long-lasting Ambassador program feature that has been very beneficial for IHG Rewards and now IHG One Rewards members.

Signing up or renewing Ambassador status using either cash or points has automatically renewed your IHG One Rewards top tier status through the end of the following calendar year. This previously applied to Spire Elite; I renewed it using this method couple of times, and now to Diamond elite.

Example:Your Diamond status is set to expire on December 31, 2022, and you don’t have enough nights or qualifying spend to qualify. You sign up or renew InterContinental Ambassador at any time during 2022 (preferably when there is a promotion for doing so).The Diamond elite is extended through December 31, 2023.

    • Rob says:

      Totally true.

      • meta says:

Yep. Had only once earned Diamond (Spire) status through matching no less (plus some extra nights) and had it now for nearly seven years.

I think now that the public secret is not a secret anymore, they’ll put a stop on it soon.

      • MisterE says:

I have Marriott Titanium. Does that mean I could status match to Diamond Elite and then renew from year to year by keeping the Ambassador going (which I reckon is good value if only for the free weekend night)?

  • Pb says:

Any chance you could convince Barclays to do something about their appalling app and desktop account information with the business card , in addition their credit assessment dept overseas needs some serious guidance .

    • Rob says:

You can come along yourself and talk to the top man at Barclaycard about it. A rare opportunity to meet someone so senior, frankly.

  • Tuppy says:

Tried numerous time to email Best Western regarding Status Match and every single email has been returned as rejected by BW as suspected spam, all emails to BW Rewards are being rejected.
    Anyone had a similar experience?
