A week ago, British Airways announced a new partnership with Uber.

BA is promising 250 Avios just for registering, so this offer is of interest even if you are only an occasional Uber user.

You couldn’t register when the deal was announced, but iPhone users who downloaded the app update released yesterday CAN now register. It also seems to have activated for Android users in the last day or so.

EDIT: Some people cannot register for the offer. From our comments, we have deduced that you cannot register if your last Uber ride was outside the UK, even if your account is linked to a UK mobile number. If you take an Uber ride in the UK it should appear.

Earn Avios from Uber

How does the Avios / Uber deal work?

The new Uber deal will let you collect 1 Avios for every £1 you spend on travel in the UK via the Uber app.

As well as rides, you will also earn on coach and train tickets booked via the app in the UK.

You do not earn anything for Uber Eats orders.

As a launch bonus, everyone who links their British Airways Executive Club and Uber accounts via the Uber app by 31st December will receive 250 bonus Avios.

How do you register?

iPhone users need the app update released yesterday, version 3.536.10003 (which, I note, is a shocking 361MB – that is a ludicrous 7,500 times bigger than the entire memory of my old 48k ZX Spectrum computer in the mid 1980s!).

Open the app and click ‘Account’ in the bottom right, followed by ‘Settings’. You will see this:

Collect Avios from Uber

Click through and you’ll be taken to a page where you can link your Uber account to your British Airways account.

It isn’t clear how long it will take for the 250 Avios for registration to appear, but based on what we have been told it does NOT require you to take a ride before they appear.

I have a solution which may work for others. The last Uber I’d used was in Austria so I made an advance reservation for a trip from my home in U.K. to the airport – cancellable without charge – and lo, when the reservation was confirmed, the link to BA Exec Club finally appeared.

  • Al Mackin says:

As someone who has taken a number of Ubers in the UK recently and who can only see Air Canada, not BA, within settings, I can confirm that the “fix” is NOT to take an Uber journey in the UK if you’ve had one abroad. The issue may be caused by taking trips abroad historically, but the fix is not to take a UK trip.

Am “speaking” to Uber support over email, who are neither competent not speedy.

  • Calum Mew says:

Doesn’t work if your account is already linked with Air Canada / Aeroplan regardless of if your last trip was in the UK, FYI.

  • Doug says:

    I guess I’ve been lucky.
My last uber trips have been in US but the link worked fine for me.

  • Alison Harper says:

The link appeared in our Uber app yesterday. It would appear that its just taking a while to update.

  • Alex Sm says:

All worked fine for me, no issues, exactly as Rob described. I think it was worth waiting for a couple of days as the dust was settling down and not to write doomed comments that nothing is working…

  • will says:

Ref Uber, I’ve had 2 problems with their charges on my account and 1 on my partners (in total 1 for a pre booked taxi where the driver didn’t turn up he was 25 minutes away and stationary at the pick up time, and 2 for eats orders one of which the delivery man had a subway order when I’d ordered from Iceland, rejected the subway and no iceland order ever arrived)

Raised customer support tickets for all of them and all have been ignored.

Not sure if it’s just us or if Uber support have downed tools recently.

On verge of credit card charge backs.

  • Pablo says:

Link appeared in the app today after I messaged them earlier in the week that I’m not seeing this option in settings.
