It may have been delayed by the pandemic, but the end is in sight for the £1.3 billion transformation of Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport.

This morning, the airport has announced that it is progressing with the final phase of rebuilding in Terminal 2. This will allow Terminal 1 to be closed upon completion in Summer 2025.

Manchester Airport Terminal 2 final phase expansion

Building work began on the new look Terminal 2 in 2017, with the first phase – including a new pier – opening in April 2019, alongside a new multi-storey car park.

The new-look Terminal 2 finally opened in July 2021, becoming the largest terminal at the airport.

Enabling work has already begun for the final phase of work.

What will happen in the final phase of work?

Costed at £440 million, the project will:

“transform the passenger experience at the UK’s third largest airport, with new spacious facilities, state-of-the-art technology and equipment, and an exciting array of shops, bars, restaurants and airport lounges.”

In particular, the work will see:

  • Doubling the size of the existing departure lounge, with a wider selection of shops and food and drink outlets
  • The construction of an additional security hall, fitted with next-generation security scanners.
  • A new pier, matching the look and feel of the first pier that opened in 2019
  • A new dual taxiway system to improve airfield efficiency, with flexible aircraft stand
  • More than doubling the terminal’s hold baggage capacity to over 5,000 bags per hour, with two new teardrop check in islands

Upon completion in 2025, around 80% of all passengers will use the expanded Terminal 2. Terminal 1 will close, although as it will be 63 years old by that point, it is probably about time.

Charlie Cornish, CEO of Manchester Airports Group, said in a statement:

“Manchester Airport is a key economic asset for the North, and this investment will maximise the contribution it makes to creating a balanced and globally competitive UK economy.

“Our £1.3bn transformation programme demonstrates our long-term commitment to providing a great airport experience for passengers who travel through Manchester. I’m delighted to be announcing the go-ahead for the final phase, which will open in 2025, connecting the people and businesses of the North to dozens more global destinations, and creating jobs and stimulating increased levels of trade and tourism.”

With T2 arrival car park already sub standard let’s pile more misery on the poor people arriving back home utterly pathetic a shambles since it opened and they deny that anything is wrong joke

  • A Beamish says:

Will the management listen to the customers concerns? I think not! It’s great having shops and restaurants but please make it easier to reach the gates for those of us who have health issues but not enough to warrant assistance. I have arthritis and two hip replacements the last thing I want is endless walking to the gate, it would be OK if escorlators and travelators worked and if there where little trucks you could jump on to get to the gate. Going to smaller local airports is all well and good but the choice of destinations is limited. Please think of the customer and not how much profit you can make from expensive shops.

“our long-term commitment to providing a great airport experience for passengers”
Very funny, you don’t have commitment to passengers’ great experience when you treat them with utter contempt. Can you imagine Tesco saying “come and shop with us, it’ll only cost you £5 to dop off at the door”
And Manchester’s short stay parking costs more than Heathrow and Gatwick. I’m not sure who they think they are but, really, they’re not.
Manchester Airport is nothing less than a bunch of bandits, fleecing its customers at every opportunity.
    Ditto East Midlands and Stansted.

Used T2 for a Business Class flight with Qatar Airways last week – airport was busy (7am) but I didn’t see any long queues through security (fast track was busier than the standard security queue) … from check in to lounge 25 mins.

Didn’t venture into any shops / restaurants but overall the whole place looks impressive plenty of places to sit.

I hear the comments on the gates – you should try Doha – twenty minute walk for my connection

  • Richard says:

I have travelled extensively throughout the world and can honestly say that Manchester Airport is the worst I have encountered on any measure.
    Parking – Horrendous
Baggage Handling – beyond a joke
    Customer service – non existing
    Cost – ridiculous

Manchester Airport is an embarrassment to the North West and the country.

How Mr Cornish still has a job presiding over this appalling state of affairs is astonishing!

  • A Green-Dempsey says:

Terminal two is very nice but there are many things wrong with Manchester Airport.
    1) Schedules. Want to fly to Europe under 4 hours? Your flight is at 7am. All of them. Together. T2 is packed, queues are huge and everyone is there at the same time. Want to fly to Europe +4 hours? All together in the afternoon & returning on a late night flight. No other way around it.
    2) Parking. Especially arrivals parking, is monstrous. All those planes arrive back together, 2 machines and a horrendous queue to get out.
A miserable experience all round but, hey, lovely terminal, when you can get a seat.

  • David Bentley says:

The longest walk to and from a gate without any help from machines that I’ve ever experienced, anywhere. And in a brand new facility. To the far end of the new extension must be the best part of a mile. As Tony Wilson said, “This is Manchester, we do things differently.” We sure do.
