Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Best Western Rewards drops Avios, effective immediately

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in March we ran an article on how to earn Avios when staying at Best Western hotels.

We said at the time that Best Western had disappeared from the Avios hotel partners page on ba.com but that it was still on the Best Western site as an option.

No longer.

Best Western Rewards drops Avios points

Members whose accounts were set up to earn Avios instead of Best Western Rewards points were emailed yesterday to say that the partnership is over. Anyone who was set up to earn Avios will now earn Best Western Rewards points instead.

The chain does remain a Virgin Points partner. Details are on the Virgin Atlantic website here – you earn a flat 500 Virgin Points per stay.

You may want to go into your Best Western online account and change your preference from Best Western Rewards points (which is what you have now been opted into) to Virgin Points.

  • Cranzle says:

Can someone clarify the Marriott rules for points please? If I purchase 100,000 points, does that mean I cannot receive any further ‘gifted’ points that year?

  • Peter says:

My bonus is 30%. I won’t be buying at such poor value.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Me too. These targeted %s are so silly; merely serve to agitate

  • Tom says:

OK people… What are your best strategies for finding good value London hotel rooms? Need to stay with the family on 15 July and the rates are just eyewatering. Looked on points with hilton, hyatt, marriott, ihg but no deals to be found….. help!

    • Andrew. says:

Just the one night? Have you checked the Premier Inn site?

      Canning Town – £140
      Greenwich – £117
      Kensington – £198

      • Tom says:

Good suggestions, thanks! Greenwich an interesting choice and good value. Travelodges over £200 blow my mind!

Also thinking about making it feel better value by using an Ambassador weekend night cert at the IC O2!

    • Nick G says:

We’ve been staying out of London last couple of times, for example the Hilton reading is v reasonable versus central London prices, and it has a great breakfast. Train in takes about 20 mins to Paddington. Yes you’re not staying in London but still easily as accessible.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Yup Moxy Milton Keynes regularly £60-80 a night and only £25 return via a 30 min train to Euston runs every 30 mins and slower trains run to about 2am

        • Julia says:

HIX Madrid €68 including breakfast, 50p reward flight saver to/from Madrid with avios then train into London. Oh and it isn’t raining either!

          • TGLoyalty says:

3 Hr flight … Heathrow to central 1 hour … probably not gonna work

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Hilton reading is more than 20 mins from Reading station though – CP is at least walkable.

      • Bagoly says:

Hampton by Hilton Luton airport (is next to Luton Parkway station) is £93 for that night.

    • Froggee says:

In such a dire situation, I would put my dates into Tripadvisor, make sure I sort by traveller ranked and put my max price in the filter section. This shows that Andrew has the right idea as at £250 I was scraping the barrel based upon the results.

I’d then conclude that buying Hilton points at 0.5c each (offer available until 9 May) and then booking the Hilton London Bankside at 70,000 points i.e. US$350 = £280 would be the best plan for me.

Your price point may well be different.

    • Nick says:

Some good deals down towards Canary Wharf. Currently staying in Doubletree Excel for £134 this weekend and only booked it 3 days ago

    • pauldb says:

You can buy the points required for either of the Stratford Hyatts for £170/night. The House includes free breakfast but the Regency has classier rooms. I think they are great hotels for their typical cash prices.
If you just want cheap Premier Inns are hard to beat, especially in newer hotels (odd locations but well connected) like Westferry. Their Premium rooms are better I think than the likes of the £300 Hyatt Place mentioned above.

      • Rob says:

        What’s Hyatt Place London East?

That said, tube links to Stratford are so good it is probably quicker into centre from there.

      • Tom says:

Great ideas..sadly we’re a 4 so we’d need 2x rooms. On that basis the Premier Inn Greenwich is a bargain!

    • Erico1875 says:

Melia Whitehouse is £208 5% off via app then Gold 20% using 2000 points or £228 cash

      • Rob says:

That’s a decent deal given the Melia has just finished a refurb. Amex Plats get Melia Gold and the upgrade / 20% off voucher too.

    • NorthernLass says:

That’s Wimbledon final weekend, when I have a 40k pn redemption at the IC PL – so far!

  • ianM says:

Somewhere as far away from Wimbledon as possible presumably!

  • Jo says:

Anyone getting 50% bonus? I’m getting max 40% poor value

    • WaynedP says:

Yes, I’ve been offered 50%, but am not tempted.

Platinum member if that has anything to do with it.

  • Alan Todd says:

I’m sure it’s been mentioned elsewhere, but Alan Boswell seems to have dropped awarding Avios (certainly on renewal) recently as well.

    • Rob says:

They are losing Avios at month end. Not their decision.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Curious – new financial products partner?

        • Rob says:

          Honestly don’t know.

          • Mart says:

Recently got a horrendous home insurance quote from them as a data point – 3x some very comprehensive competitors

        • Alan Todd says:

They mentioned it was due to the phasing out of aviosvouchers.com, which may have interesting repercussions for other entities that use this route – RBS, for example.

  • brian says:

@Rob I’m seeing the follow offer within the app but as you say, opt in isn’t required

    [blockquote]Free Bonus Points

Join us in celebrating our new hotel openings and earn up to an additional 5,000 Hilton Honors Points.

Earn 1,000 Hilton Honors Points per night at select properties
Earn 5,000 Hilton Honors Points per stay at select properties for three or more nights[/blockquote]
Staying at a Hilton tomorrow so that should be an extra 3,000 points as a result of the two current offers.

  • Mike Hunt says:

Rob – nothing celebrating the Coronation today ?

    • Rob says:

      Er, no.

    • GeoffreyB says:

What’s the relevance to loyalty points?

      • Dubious says:

I think the thought was about special promos – discounts or bonus points.

        • GeoffreyB says:

If there were any then presumably they would have been in the article?

      • Rob says:

I’m at my sons basketball class! Not much interest in it in London to be honest. Everyone you see on TV is a tourist.

        • GeoffreyB says:

Not much of a contribution to levelling up from Charles. He should have insisted today’s event was held outside of London. Somewhere like Hull could have done with the influx of American tourists
