REMINDER: the ‘Reward Flight Finder’ feature in the BA app is still broken

We originally ran this article three months ago – and the situation had already been going on for a few months at that point.

However, most people seem to have forgotten because our forum (and my email inbox) are still seeing an influx of people posting questions along the lines of ‘Why has British Airways removed all Avios flights TO London?’.

The reason for these odd comments quickly becomes apparent.

'Reward Flight Finder' feature in British Airways app is broken

Each reader had been trying to use the ‘Reward Flight Finder’ feature in the British Airways app. That’s unfortunate.

What is ‘Reward Flight Finder’?

Before I go on, I should say that the British Airways app feature called ‘Reward Flight Finder’ has nothing to do with the paid-for reward flight searching service of the same name.

When you search for an Avios reward flight in the BA app, you are presented with two options:

British Airways Reward Flight Finder broken

As well as the ‘standard’ Avios search, where you plug in the route and dates you want, there is ‘Reward Flight Finder’.

This is – on paper – a useful way of helping people who have a lot of flexibility to find somewhere to go.

The problem is that it hasn’t worked for some time – I don’t mean ‘some days’, I mean ‘ for pretty much all of 2023 to date’. Welcome to the world of BA IT …..

For many long haul searches, you get this response:

British Airways Reward Flight Finder

If you believe the BA app, there are no return Avios flights from Dubai in Business Class in August 2023. This is, of course, nonsense – although, as Dubai is currently chillier than most of Southern Europe at just 39 degrees, there could admittedly have been a bit of a rush …..

This problem does not apply to all routes. Most (all?) short haul routes work OK, and some long haul seem to be fine. There is no real logic to it.

There is a DIY fix. Reverse the search, so you are searching from Dubai to London in this case.

Because the ‘outbound’ results render OK, you will now see that there are many days with Business Class flights available from Dubai in August, should you be rethinking those plans to head to Spain or Greece:

British Airways Reward Flight Finder

Frankly, I wouldn’t bother with this at all. Pay a few quid per month for SeatSpy and you can get detailed cabin searches AND email notifications when seats open up for the dates you want.

However, neither the BA app or SeatSpy can identify the ‘extra’ seats that are opened up in Club World for holders of British Airways Premium Plus American Express 2-4-1 companion vouchers. You are on your own here.

(You can read more about the extra Club World availability for British Airways Premium Plus American Express cardholders in this HfP article.)

    Swings and roundabouts.

Never got a Avios return from antalya

  • letBAgonesbe says:

@Rob, you know people at BA. Could you let them know?

    • Rich says:

My word, you’re not suggesting that BA don’t already know about it are you?

It’s on the list. The list is just a very, very long one.

  • Nick G says:

Bit like BA overall……”still broken”…..next they will be blaming COVID…..still…..

  • Nick says:

Should I mention BA On Business again? Oh, I just did!

I wonder which will be back on line first, and when….?

  • Manya says:

If people don’t want to pay for SeatSpy or reverse the search on the app then they could simply use the search function via the BA website?

    • yorkieflyer says:

And if they don’t want to go to Spain or Greece then toddle off to Dubai, same retread of the predictable gulf state sales pitch. I really do scratch my head at any suggestion that a grecophile suggest as myself would fancy a trip to a sterile shopping mall in a desert.

    • Colin_Thames says:

The website was also broken when I tried it a month ago. Very annoying when you’re in the regions

  • Charlie says:

Isn’t SeatSpy broken too as it’s showing lots of phantom availability?

    • Stuart says:

      Same for me

    • DJW says:

I have the same issue on seatspy with lots of LGW/BOD availability showing but not real.
When challenged, seatspy sent me a screen shot of THE BA Reward seat finder (which we know isn’t working) with the same incorrect availability.

Basically pointless if 2 systems are showing phantom availability!!

Not heard back from SS when I told them this!

  • TomJ says:

I’m also having an issue selecting to search with a companion voucher.

I have one in my account currently and previously they would always appear on the avios search for a flight page. Now they don’t so I can’t seem to find a way to book online using it anymore.

Anyone else having the same issue?

    • NorthernLass says:

Can you not see it on the home page of your BAEC account? It should be just above any flight bookings you have. Normally you can redeem it from there.

  • NorthernLass says:

SeatSpy is showing no return flights on the NAS/GCM route from March 24 onwards. If you try a dummy booking on ba.com (rather than the award finder tool), there is also no availability, and seats just don’t seem to be being released each day either. It’s very odd, because I can’t think there’s a massive one-way exodus from the region next summer! I did manage to find CW seats on the inbound with a new-style 241 for next June, even though this was at T-355, where you normally see the standard availability, but not the extra I-class seats!

    • Nick says:

Rev Man 101, and completely logical if you think about it. It’s rare for I class to be open on the first day a flight is sold. This is because it’s primarily used for cheap cash sales, and you don’t want to open your cheapest cash seats when the only people booking commercial tickets are those who are so inflexible or very date-sensitive that they’re booking this far in advance. Same with O/Q in WT. You open them later, when you know how it’s booking against forecast, there’s effective competition, people are more flexible/price sensitive, and you need to price competitively.
