IHG One Rewards allowing free points transfers for Diamonds (with a loophole for others)

We’ve seen some big moves this year in loyalty schemes allowing free and/or easy transfers of points to other people:

IHG One Rewards free points transfers

World of Hyatt still requires you to fill in a paper form and scan or fax it, but we’ll pass over that for now!

IHG One Rewards is now allowing free transfers

IHG One Rewards is the latest scheme to decide that allowing free points transfers is good for business.

However, they have gone about it in an odd way.

Historically IHG has allowed transfers but only at the rate of $5 per 1,000 points. This did make sense ten years ago – I once did it with a few points my Mum earned. However, IHG cut the cost of buying its points following its regular devaluations. It also started running regular 100% bonuses for buying points. This means that you can pick them up for just over $5 per 1,000 anyway.

The page for making a free transfer is here.

Free transfers can only be made by Diamond members of IHG One Rewards. This defeats the key reason to do a transfer – to allow a low status member to transfer their points to a higher status member to make a reward booking, to benefit from the status on the stay.

For clarity, anyone can receive points (as long as the account is over 30 days old) but only a Diamond can send them.

IHG One Rewards now allowing free points transfers

I’m not sure why a Diamond member would want to transfer out. They are clearly still actively staying with IHG or they wouldn’t be Diamond. If they want to make a reward booking for someone else, it’s best to make it themselves – hoping that the elite benefits will stick – and put the name of the real guest in as ‘2nd guest’.

Transfers are restricted to 500,000 IHG One Rewards points per year.

There is a second option

Members of the IHG Business Rewards programme are also being offered free transfers, although it appears that you need to be a member for 30 days to transfer.

Our full review of IHG Business Rewards is here.

If you are not a Diamond member and want to make a free points transfer, signing up for IHG Business Rewards may be the way.

The IHG Business Rewards website is here.

Conclusion

This is clearly a step in the right direction by IHG so we shouldn’t be too grumpy!

However, realistically, it needs to open it up to all members – or even just all elite members if they are worried about abuse from new accounts – to maximise its value.

The comments on Loyaltylobby seem to suggest that it actually doesn’t work for IHG Business members…

    • TJ says:

That does seem to the case right now. I registered my wife as a Business Reward member yesterday and it still brings up the standard charges when trying to make a transfer. I read in the T&Cs something about a minimum 30 day activation period so wonder if this has something to do with it.

    • QFFlyer says:

Has worked for my OH (Plat Business Rewards) to me (Diamond Business Rewards).

Maybe one side has to be Diamond, or both have to be Biz Rewards?

  • JAXBA says:

This Diamond wants to transfer enough points to his Diamond wife so that we both have at least 1 million points each. We can then maximise the 10% rebate we both get on redemptions (from our Chase US IHG cards), up to 100K points back per year. Maximising that rebate could get us an extra 10K Avios in our BA HHA if I were to convert all our IHG points, versus converting our individual IHG balances as they are currently.

Awkwardly, I haven’t been able to log in to the transfer page yet, I keep getting an error from the IHG branded points.com page.

    • JAXBA says:

Still not working for me. I’m Diamond as of this year, and have been a Business Rewards member for approx 7 years. I’m only getting the option to pay to transfer.

  • Ben says:

    Morning

I could really do with earning a few more IHG points- used most of mine from the creation days. I know it’s not the best way, but how many points does it work out if I spend on my paid Virgin card and transfer to IHG? And is it really worth it?? I have enough Virgin points to keep me going for a couple of years anyway

    Thanks

  • Tariq says:

Presumably a transfer from a Diamond to a Club member would keep the Club member’s existing points stash from expiring – thats what I’d use it for.

    • Rob says:

Many schemes don’t let transfers stop expiry although not sure of IHG rules.

  • whiskerxx says:

We are both Ambassador Diamond Elite.
Only one of us has Lounge access with milestone rewards.
When travelling together it benefits to book from my account if hotel has lounge.
My question is – does it double points purchase opportunities?
Tried it yesterday, points posted overnight

  • SammyJ says:

My husband and I are both diamond but his expires this month, mine has another year. I’d planned to renew his via ambassador but since that’s no longer a thing I’ll just transfer his points over to my account and make all bookings from that one

    • Rob says:

Yes, makes sense. My wife and I are in the same boat, but most of my IHG stays are solo ones so there’s no benefit in pushing my points onto her.

  • Andrew says:

Not sure I understand your criticism of this not being open to all members. It’s not about ‘maximising value’ by enabling as many people as possible to transfer, it’s about rewarding diamond members by giving them something free that they previously needed to pay for. Ultimately this is no different to giving elites a free drink, upgrade or lounge access when others need to pay.

  • SammyJ says:

Anyone actually done it yet and able to advise how long it takes to go through? I transferred from my husband’s account to my own a couple of hours ago, but nothing is showing on either balance yet. Got a booking I need to make, so I’m hoping it won’t take too long!

    • QFFlyer says:

Just checked now and mine have moved from OH to my account successfully, this is around the 72h mark they stated, but I hadn’t remembered to check. Transfer is dated 7/12 though.
