Following on from our articles looking at where British Airways will fly from London Gatwick and from Heathrow Terminal 3 this summer, I wanted to take a fresh look at the BA Cityflyer operation at London City Airport.

British Airways will operate to 22 destinations from London City Airport for Summer 2024.

In the airline world, ‘summer’ starts on the last Sunday in March when the timetables switch, and runs to the last Sunday in October.

Where does British Airways fly from London City Airport?

These routes are all operated by BA Cityflyer, a separate British Airways subsidiary.

It operates a fleet of Embraer E190 aircraft. These are smaller planes that are able to take off and land from London City’s short runways.

The E190s feature 2-2 seating (image below) in both business class (Club Europe) and economy (Euro Traveller). A densification programme is about to begin which will reduce the currently generous 33″ pitch from row 12 and add eight more seats (two rows) to each aircraft.

Service on board differs to British Airways flights from Heathrow and Gatwick. Economy passengers are offered a snack and a soft / alcoholic / hot drink, just like the old days on Heathrow and Gatwick services. Club Europe passengers receive the same service as they would on a mainline flight, albeit from a different catering company to Heathrow flights.

There are no lounges at London City Airport – none at all. It’s not BA being mean and refusing to pay! However, there is no need to arrive too early for a flight from London City, especially as the airport has now switched to the new ‘keep your liquids and laptop in your bag’ security scanners.

British Airways routes from London City Airport

The following information is based on BA’s schedules for Summer 2024. It excludes Winter-only routes, which are mainly to ski destinations.

No flights depart London City Airport between 1pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday so flight schedules can be a little odd at weekends.

I have included the total of weekly flights below. Numbers can vary by month, hence the ‘+’ against some routes.

  • Amsterdam (22+ flights per week)
  • Barcelona (4+ flights per week)
  • Belfast City (13+ flights per week)
  • Bergerac (5 flights per week in June, July and August only)
  • Berlin (22+ flights per week)

  • VinZ says:

Flown into LCY yesterday. Plenty of booze in economy alongside a sandwich and a snack.

  • DaveP says:

I’m looking forward to flying from LCY for the first time (to Dublin) in October as a positioning flight to start my tier point run to US. In the absence of a lounge I assume there are coffee places at LCY?

    • Rob says:

Yes, but not paid-for by BA. You don’t get a voucher.

    • daveinitalia says:

If you have a Priority Pass not issued by Amex there’s places at LCY you can use your £15 credit.

  • Terry Buller says:

What might have made a better read, although requires some research, rather than a little advert for the airline, would’ve been an investigation into routes no longer flown. We could’ve looked at their destination, why they were popular in the past, why perhaps they got phased out and whether they could ever come back.

  • Matthias says:

LCY is the best airport ever, except for the lack of lounge and generally depressing restaurant option (there is only 1).

But I love it anyway. Flew LCY to Skiathos last summer – fantastic way to start your holiday for sure with the generous pitch at the 2-2 layout for a family of 4. Plus Skiathos airport is 5 minutes from town so highly recommended. And on the return you’re on the DLR in les than 10 minutes after landing.

  • John G says:

Strange decision not to include winter only routes but to include summer only routes. We do still have a month left of the winter season after all.

  • Jenny Reed says:

Sadly there seems to be a huge price premium flying from London City. The combination of mostly business travellers on these flights all wanting to go hand luggage only, the forthcoming densification of the planes and failure to board consistently by group number means I don’t feel I can use them anymore due to the risk of BA insisting on putting my carry on bag in the hold.

    • Richie says:

Do business travellers take a 56 x 45 x 23 cm roller bag for their day trip to Frankfurt?

    • lumma says:

I don’t see a price premium from LCY. It does vary but sometimes it can be the cheapest option, even on routes that you can fly from all three airports such as Amsterdam – for example April 11th LCY is £74 and Heathrow and Gatwick are both over £100

  • Matthew says:

Are alcoholic drinks not still offered in economy? They were when I last flew from there at the end of 2023.

    • daveinitalia says:

The article says “Economy passengers are offered a snack and a soft / alcoholic / hot drink, just like the old days on Heathrow and Gatwick services” although drink in the singular is understated somewhat. I’ve had more than one on a domestic in economy.

  • Alex says:

‘ Economy passengers are offered a snack and a soft / hot drink’

Should be ‘ Economy passengers are offered a complimentary snack and a full bar service, including soft, alcoholic and hot drinks.’
