Yes, we’re in those dead days of August when there isn’t much real news to write about and we find we have too much time on our hands.

Which is how I came to look at the Nectar ‘Great Fruit & Veg Challenge’ and managed to get myself some cheap Avios ….

Great Fruit and Vegetable Challenge

If you open the Nectar app, you’ll see details of the Sainsbury’s ‘Great Fruit & Veg Challenge’. Running to 17th September, it aims to encourage you to buy more fruit and vegetables.

The challenge works best for people who never buy fruit and vegetables in Sainsbury’s, because you should have very soft targets.

You may, like me, have had a quick look at the challenge and written it off as being too difficult. You may be wrong. It looks trickier than it is.

This is what Rhys and I both have:

  • buy 10 portions of fruit and vegetables and get 500 Nectar points
  • buy another 10 portions of fruit and vegetables and get 500 Nectar points
  • buy another 10 portions of fruit and vegetables and get 500 Nectar points

…. for a total of 1,500 Nectar points.

1,500 Nectar points is worth:

  • 938 Avios
  • £7.50 to spend in Sainsbury’s or with another Nectar partner
  • almost (if you get to 1,600 points) four free coffees in Caffe Nero, worth at least £13
Nectar Fruit Vegetable Challenge

The key point is the definition of ‘portion’

Where I went wrong, when I initially saw this offer, is that I assumed a ‘portion’ was a packet of fruit or vegetables.

It isn’t.

A ‘portion’ is 80g of fruit or vegetables, excluding potatoes. There are some other niche exclusions but the main one is potatoes.

This means that, if your target is 30 portions, you only need to buy 2.5kg of fruit and vegetables.

I popped into the Sainsbury’s Local near our office and they had 500g bags of carrots reduced to 49p from 60p, so I bought five. My wife will be pleased.

Carrots appear to be the best ‘price to weight’ product that isn’t excluded, although this may change depending on what is on offer.

For a total spend of £2.45, I triggered the full 1,500 Nectar points in one go. We also get carrot soup for a couple of days, I suspect. The Nectar IT is surprisingly good and you will have the bonus points in your account within a couple of minutes of leaving the store.

Regular shoppers at Sainsbury’s seem to be getting very high targets, eg 600 portions. However, if you rarely visit, or rarely buy fruit and vegetables when you do, you may well get the ’30 portions for 1,500 Nectar points’ offer that seems to be the baseline.

My app says potatoes are excluded.
It also says baked beans exclude?????? I thought this offer was about FRESH fruit and veg.
Also, all the whining about targets and “not worth it”. As one reader already said, if you are buying from Sainsburys anyway, what harm does it do to activate the promotion. They are not asking for any money to activate it, and if you do not reach a target, nothing lost apart form 10 seconds activating the offer. If you buy some products elsewhere because they are cheaper there then, again, nothing lost.

    • AL says:

Given you have to activate the offer to see what your goal is, I think the points about “not worth it” probably come from people weighing up making changes to their grocery habits to gain a few Avios coupled with the folks who are working out the redemption value of the Avios versus the cash outlay. That leads to the “not worth it” comments moreso than the part about activating if you’re already spending in Saino’s.

  • UrsaMinor says:

If you don’t want to buy loads of carrots another couple of suggestions 1 x 1kg bag of Stamford Street mixed frozen fruits plus 1 500g bag of Sainsburys mixed dried fruit triggers the whole 30 points if that is your given target.

  • ADS says:

older iPhones operate an older version of the App where the F&V offer doesn’t appear – so you need to borrow a newer phone and login to initiate the challenge!

    • Rhys says:

How old is your iPhone?! iOS17 is compatible with phones from 2018!

      • Nick says:

Only available to those with iPhone 8 or later. Plenty of my family and friends have the 7 – bought well into 2019 (they kept selling it longer than usual because a lot of people prefer smaller phones). But you can have the nectar app on iPad too if needed.

Interestingly Amex rolled back their recent app changes this week (that also mandated minimum iPhone 8) after many complaints from customers who still have older phones so it’s probably more than you think.

        • Londonsteve says:

I too resisted upgrading my 7 because it’s so compact it easily fits into a pocket. I now have an X but it’s so heavy in comparison and is awkward to operate with one hand. Why did compact phones go out of fashion?

    • ClubSmed says:

Maybe older Apples are not considered “fresh”?
      …I’ll get my coat.

  • jp-mco says:

Beats yet another lounge review I suppose!

  • ankomonkey says:

This is a far cry from the halcyon days of bonus Tesco Clubcard points for buying certain fruit/veg that often worked per item rather than per order. I know many on here bought the maximum okra, baby aubergines and others I can’t remember that the website would allow (99?).

  • Mikeact says:

Tomato soup tasted pretty good, with flavourings….not my first choice but pretty good all the same.

  • Thea says:

This is a hoot! Within 1hr of Rob’s article, I had my 1500 Nectar points ( converting to 1000 Avios as I had a spare 100+Nectar points lurking) from visiting my Sainsburys Local, which I rarely use, having Waitrose and M&S nearby. I bought a bag of apples( 6 credits) a net of oranges (5) plus 2x 500g bags of Rob’s carrots at 60p each for another 5 credits. That lot was sufficient – all for about a fiver. The produce was fresh and nice too.

  • SFlyer says:

I can’t even find this offer in my app…
