British Airways will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines

As we covered in an exclusive story last week, British Airways has suspended the launch of flights to Kuala Lumpur until 1st April 2025.

This is due to mechanical issues with multiple Boeing 787 aircraft which have caused revisions to the winter flying schedule.

To date, BA has only been willing to rebook passengers on Qatar Airways or to Singapore on British Airways. This has now changed.

BA will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines and Cathay

A rebooking arrangement has now been made with Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

You can either:

  • fly direct to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines
  • fly to Singapore with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur
  • fly to Bangkok with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur

This is less attractive. As well as having multiple blackout dates, you are only allowed an Economy flight between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Flights from London to Hong Kong must be on British Airways.

Whilst British Airways does not usually allow multiple changes to bookings, feedback in our comments is that people who had been moved to Qatar Airways have been successful in asking to be moved to a direct Malaysia Airlines flight. I don’t know where you stand if you accepted a BA re-route to Singapore after being told that you had to make your own way to KL.

    Thanks for the advice to ‘sit tight’. Just off the phone to BA and pleased with the result.
    Originally booked using Avios and a AA 2for1 voucher in business class LHR – KUL. Changed to MH, business class with flights timings virtually the same as original booking. 
    CSA indicated so far relatively quiet, but expecting it to get busy again as people become aware of new policies.

    Good thing happens to those who waited! Got rebooked to J, previous booking was Avios and 241 on 24th dec, and new booking on MH is a few days earlier on the weekend which is so much better! Also full fare so will get points too which is a plus.

      @Anna L – you will only get Avios/TP by chance, if the agent has incorrectly re-issued your ticket. It will be a bonus, but don’t count on it.

    Think people being very judgemental about those of us the took the SIN option as we rely on the info given to us by the airline. In this case some were trying to protect the other financial liabilities we had and we bluntly told its SIN or nothing bar refund. Under duress we took that option. Obviously if a company had any honour it would then try to help considering you can now connect to KUL but then BA has no honour, and has said they will no longer speak to me about this reservation and stuck with making separate arrangements to get to Singapore. We aren’t stupid but simply at the time we given no other options .

      I think it would be worth you raising a complaint to see if you can get it changed. There’s no point in pursuing it with the call centre.

        Yes have done and have transcripts. I’m done with it now though after trying yesterday again to get connection added on BA7904 and the fact there’s a potential GDPR issue. Ironically have now booked a car to take us from SIN to hotel
        In KL and will actually probably arrive before time I would if I took connection at SIN. A few extra quid but will probably be less stressed send had enough of that this week

      I feel for you but if an apple salesman only has half an eaten apple or a refund option. He can only provide you what he has at that particular time, regardless whether in a weeks time he will get more apples in.

    Sort of agree except for the fact at the time last weekend you are told to contact BA “to get you moving again” and you are told it’s a half eaten apple or your money back . No mention of a new supply of apples coming in later.

    More than happy. Just called and offered both Qatar and Malaysia options – chose Qatar as prefer seats and timings. On a 241 voucher not that it should make any difference in this situation.

      Interesting since the specific policies issued today don’t mention Qatar at all. Which class?

        I know. I was surprised but when checking options the Qatar flights were a few £000s cheaper so presumably come up as an option for BA. In business class

          We’re in a similar position, one way Club World redemption with a Barclays upgrade voucher in our case. Due to the JV I would have thought Qatar (which may still be our preference) would be a more attractive option for BA than the direct MH flights (which from the policies published today would otherwise be our choice). Still weighing up options on whether we want to bring it forward by a day anyway and not travelling until the end of March, so will give it a few more days and see what happens.

    Your last paragraph is incorrect.

    I had, stupidly jumped straight to a Qatar re-book last week.
    Called today and changed to Malaysian airlines option.
    Zero hassle, zero full.

        Genuinely shocked at how great the second call to them was, done and dusted in 10min.

        Thought it was going to be a fight to get what we would prefer, or disappointment at first re-book being only option

        Just a pity those of us that took Singapore option not getting a second bit of the cherry. Good luck to those that have but BA management should hang their heads in shame for what truly is a debacle, treating some of their most loyal premium customers for mugs .

    Thanks for the update, I waited and am now booked on MH business using 241 on same dates albeit chose an earlier flight on outbound so happy, thanks all for the advice to sit tight

    I was told on my original call that as an Avios booking I had no rights if there was no reward availability on other flights including QR. I had a lot of onward travel and hotel costs that were not refundable which put pressure on me. They really wanted me to cancel my booking and lose the rest of the money committed. I had to fight like crazy to get offered Singapore and was told I would have to pay my onward flights. It is wrong to blame people who have to accept what they are being told by BA is true. I could not let them cancel my trip and they knew that have then power over me. And yes it was me that was £300 out as a result of this but I accept that BA will never refund it.

      I would still raise it through the complaint route, especially if you have evidence, and ask for the booking to be amended or for the reimbursement of the connecting flights if you have already booked them. Even if you don’t, they will presumably be able to pull the call recording and review it. Assuming one exists, you’d also being able to request it via a subject access request.

      Not only is it wrong that customers are treated in this way, but only by challenging it will BA have any incentive to improve.

      Also a lesson learnt to all in similar situations, to research your rights before accepting a resolution that you are not happy with.

      Also worth adding that I think I’ve seen others say that they have already done this and had the connecting flights added on. One thing to bear in mind is that if you’ve booked connecting flights yourself, the connection will not be protected (i.e. if the inbound flight is delayed and you miss the onward flight as a result, you will be deemed a no-show and you will not be compensated or rebooked), nor is it likely that you will be able to check luggage through meaning that you will have to clear immigration and customs in Singapore and drop your bags again before clearing security if you have checked luggage.

      If that’s a concern to you, its worth pursuing even if you have already bought your own connecting flights.

      Rob has written many times that on cancellation/delay it makes no difference how one booked a flight.
      1) Do spread the word among customers
      2) Is BA call centre agent making this lie up, or following a script?
