Donate Avios to Comic Relief, with British Airways doubling your donation

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

British Airways has, for some time now, been allowing Executive Club members to donate spare or unwanted Avios to projects supported by the BA Better World Community Fund.

Until 31st March, IAG Loyalty will match, Avios for Avios, your donation to Comic Relief.

1 Avios is worth a donation of 0.8p, so with the matched funding Comic Relief will receive 1.6p per Avios you donate.

BA Community Fund

See here for details.

You are not told in plain English that you will be giving 0.8p per Avios donated. However, if you select ‘donate Avios’ and add an amount (say 1,000 Avios) and then toggle instead to ‘donate cash’ you will see that a cash sum equivalent to 0.8p is shown.

You can donate to other charities too – or list your own

The Community Fund allows UK registered charities or social enterprise working in the UK to receive funding as part of their own crowdfunding activities. If you run or work for a UK registered charity or social enterprise you can apply to have your own fundraising appeal featured.

If you want to donate, you can pick a project from the list on the website, such as:

BA Community Fund

The full T&C for making donations or listing your own charity are here.

The Comic Relief donation match ends on 31st March.

  • memesweeper says:

That valuation is close to 100 Avios = €1. I wonder if that’s the “member” cost from IAGL to airlines?

  • No longer Entitled says:

1.6p is a good price so hopefully all those people who have been shouting how they will never fly BA again put their Avios where their mouth is.

    • Skywalker says:

Avios can be used via other channels though, so the people can still keep their vow never to fly BA again, and keep their Avios too 😉

  • Tony says:

For years Comic Relief has been helping itself to £25million pounds to run the Relief business before the kids receive a penny. If you think I’m going to contribute an Avios towards this untoward behaviour…on your bikes. Totally wrong…..

    • Ironside says:

And on what would you suggest they run the business instead? Pixie dust?

    • ChrisBCN says:

I have no idea how much it costs to run an organisation like Comic Relief, but you clearly think 25 million is the wrong number – what should it cost?

  • Skywalker says:

Is there a minimum Avios donation? I have a stray amount in a stray account and this would be one way to empty the balance for closure.

  • Ed says:

Same price as nectar -> avios rate.

And cheapest avios acquisition cost around 0.9p via boost. Seems to me that 0.8p is sort of some internal valuation.

  • James says:

This seems like a great use of some Avios, as I never get 1.6p from redemptions.

If I donate Avios I have purchased, can I claim GiftAid on either the purchase price or the 0.8p. I have a lot of Avios I have paid in the region of 0.9-1p for.
