A reader dropped me an email yesterday about a block that had been placed on transfers from his BA Club account.

He wanted to book a redemption via the Qatar Airways website. Since Qatar Airways does not acknowledge BA Household Accounts, the reader had paid £50 to transfer Avios from his wife to himself so their points were in one place.

He attempted to make the booking via the Qatar Airways website but found he was blocked.

For clarity, and despite the message, there is NOTHING that the support team can do to help you. You need to sit and wait.

I looked into this and it appears to be a common problem in recent weeks. Unfortunately, it is a real issue for people who need to consolidate Avios in one account before making a redemption.

To put it simply: when you move Avios from another airline into British Airways Club, a block of 7-9 days on transfers OUT of BA Club may be placed on your account.

The same occurs if you transfer Avios between British Airways Club accounts.

The problem is that the very reason that people transfer Avios into British Airways Club (or between BA Club accounts) is that they WANT to make a redemption outside ba.com!

The main issue for readers is making Avios redemptions on the Qatar Airways website. Qatar Airways has a lot of extra availability on its own flights (albeit for more Avios in most cases), you can book 360 days in advance (vs 355 days via ba.com) and they have unique partners such as Garuda Indonesia, Airlink and Virgin Australia.

I got automatically ‘unlocked’ after 6/7 days. Did Aer Lingus > BA transfer on Monday, was unable to transfer points from BA to Qatar until Sunday.

Tried transferring more Avios, Iberia → BA and then BA → Qatar. Turns out Iberia → BA triggered the lock in my account again.

Just been able to transfer from BA to Qatar. Took just under 9 days.

I waited two weeks before trying my BA–>Qatar transfer again, and today it worked on the first try. After that, I realized I had recently accumulated a fresh bunch of Avios in my Iberia account, so I ran a test; I moved them over to BA and then tried BA—>Qatar again, all I got was the same suspicious activity / lockdown message. So pathetic and frustrating.

I’ve hit 7 days today and managed to move points from BA to Qatar. Reward flight gone.

There’s no advice we can give you, to be honest, except to say that if you were thinking of making an Avios redemption via another platform except ba.com, be VERY careful about moving Avios into your BA Club account in the preceeding 7-9 days.

    A similar but slightly different issue. My Tier points and Avios have yet to be credited for a flight I took almost four weeks ago. It was an AY booking, LHR to MEL, the first two legs on AY and credited within a couple of days. The third on QR awaited. It’s vital because without this flight, I will be be demoted from Gold. My tier point year ended 31 March. I lodged a claim but heard nothing more. Spoke to the Gold line last week who helpfully said they would raise it internally but said that there were often problems where AY have to contact QR to make sure I was actually on the flight who in turn have to contact BA. But a month?!

      We have had similar problems getting points posted from SriLankan flight taken 8th February. Partner claims made 2 weeks afterwards. 11 phone calls to silver line – each one was reassured the points would post. Boarding passes and eticket were emailed as requested. My points finally posted on 22nd March – so I retain Silver. My husband still waiting & he needs this one flight to reach Gold.

    Thanks! I’ve made a mental note to, in future, maybe be a bit careful with making a bid on any experience in the Qatar Privilege Club Collection, because that usually involves moving Avios around, for me, BA – Qatar – BA, and maybe not to do it if I’m planning booking a reward flight soon after.

    Is this not likely to be a response to the numerous reports of fraudulent transferring out of avios from BAEC recently? Though obviously it would be more helpful if BA sorted out their security rather than just putting a block on all transfers!

    It’s as if there wasn’t a banking system in place that had already solved online security in transferring and using money within an acceptable range of fraud.

    Definitely a case for regulation relating to pseudo money regarding a customers right to use it and a companies obligation to protect it.

        That would be completely at the behest of the way the regulation was drafted.
        You could insist the right to use it and obligation to protect it “as if it were” cash without legally treating it as actual cash.

        It really shouldn’t have needed to come to that as avios/ba should have sorted security out already, but I suppose there’s all the evidence you need that companies do need the stick sometimes when it’s in their own interest.

      I’m one of the people quoted in this article. I sent my Amex MR rewards into BA, but found a better reward on QR’s website. I was unable to send the Avios from BA to QR for 9 days. Amex MR’s into BA account are also one of the causes of the 7-9 day lock.

        Came here to understand if Amex MR to Avios was locked – sounds like it is, and that’s horrible. In the past I’ve transferred MRs to BAEC, boosted times x3, and transferred to Qatar, then booked reward Qatar flights, all more or less immediate… sounds like this now needs to be planned a month or two in advance to be safe.

    Surely if somebody is planning a redemption 360 days ahead then it’s no great hardship to plan any necessary avios consolidation 1-2 weeks ahead. No point in readers blaming BA for better securing their avios just because they’re not smart enough or organised enough to run their own accounts effectively.

      BJ, I think the big issue with doing this is a lot of times (especially in my case) a person doesn’t really know how many avios you might actually need on the day. You really have to know peak/off peak dates (i never remember) and if you’re checking all iberia, qatar, ba, finnair to see if the redemption rates are different then you wouldn’t know in advance who would have the cheapest.

        HHA, combines add transfers have now all been with us for some time therefore it is good practice to have an ongoing strategy in place to fully exploit this but J suspect relatively few do and that is why this sudden change will be a problem for many. Still, it is a good time now for readers to rethink tbeir strategies in this respect and change the way they do things if they wish. Ofcorse, as your comment indicates, no one strategy will fit all and it is difficult to account for unknowns but precisely because of this having some strategy in place is still better than having none.

            Strategies will vary enormously but the way it works for methat works for me is:

            Park and maintain enough avios at QR for 2x J EDI-Asia

            Park and maintain enough avios at AY for 2x J Asia to Finnair Zone 1

            BAEC I mostly just use for earning and moving, and banking any excess avios as HHA remains an excellent tool, especially for making use of smaller amounts if avios across multiple accounts.

            Yes, keep your BA bslance st zero if BA is being this inept or obstlructive (take your pick).

            Move any avios credited to BA out as soon as they arrive. Only move to BA when needed for a specific redemption being booked through BA.

      Yes, @BJ – people will understandably shout loudly if their Avios get stolen and these sorts of double transfers must represent a higher risk. The inconvenience is the price we all have to pay for the few who are determined to scam and cheat.

        I don’t think I have ever made an award redemption more than 3 months in advance. The real benefit of being familiar with these systems is having the flexibility to basically redeem whenever it suits me by toggling between alliances, taking a suboptimal routing, enduring a short Y connection within a business class redemption etc. Having to cement plans a year in advance really doesn’t work for me, and I don’t think I would be alone in that.

          It is not specifically about booking a year in advance, jt’s about being organised as best we can to book whenever we want to. For sure it was great just to move abios around instantly as we pleased but sadly that ship is now sailing so it’s a good time to refect on how we manage that is we have not already done so.

            It becomes really tricky if you aren’t interested in holding significant Avios balances- e.g. because you prefer the flexibility of AMEX points. By the time you’ve transferred from AMEX to BA to AY, the availability is gone and you’re stuck with 100k points of the wrong type.

        I suspect the scale of the problem must be huge, it seems unlikely they’d increasingly tighten up if it wasn’t.

    Yes. This is a pain especially as when the lock occurs, Qatar will still let you book the redemption with your pooled avios and even issue a PNR. But then no taxes will be charged and the booking will be invalid. You won’t know this though until you try to look up the booking!

      Well you don’t get an e-ticket receipt, and you don’t get redirected to a “booking successful” page, so it’s pretty obvious that it’s failed. I don’t even bother trying any more – this new info just means I will have to pre-plan moving avios into QR
