BA appears to be putting 7-9 day delays on some Avios transfers to Qatar, Iberia, Finnair

A reader dropped me an email yesterday about a block that had been placed on transfers from his BA Club account.

He wanted to book a redemption via the Qatar Airways website. Since Qatar Airways does not acknowledge BA Household Accounts, the reader had paid £50 to transfer Avios from his wife to himself so their points were in one place.

He attempted to make the booking via the Qatar Airways website but found he was blocked.

This is what he got:

For clarity, and despite the message, there is NOTHING that the support team can do to help you. You need to sit and wait.

I looked into this and it appears to be a common problem in recent weeks. Unfortunately, it is a real issue for people who need to consolidate Avios in one account before making a redemption.

To put it simply: when you move Avios from another airline into British Airways Club, a block of 7-9 days on transfers OUT of BA Club may be placed on your account.

The same occurs if you transfer Avios between British Airways Club accounts.

The problem is that the very reason that people transfer Avios into British Airways Club (or between BA Club accounts) is that they WANT to make a redemption outside ba.com!

The main issue for readers is making Avios redemptions on the Qatar Airways website. Qatar Airways has a lot of extra availability on its own flights (albeit for more Avios in most cases), you can book 360 days in advance (vs 355 days via ba.com) and they have unique partners such as Garuda Indonesia, Airlink and Virgin Australia.

Here are some examples from this Flyertalk thread:

I got automatically ‘unlocked’ after 6/7 days. Did Aer Lingus > BA transfer on Monday, was unable to transfer points from BA to Qatar until Sunday.

Tried transferring more Avios, Iberia → BA and then BA → Qatar. Turns out Iberia → BA triggered the lock in my account again.

Just been able to transfer from BA to Qatar. Took just under 9 days.

I waited two weeks before trying my BA–>Qatar transfer again, and today it worked on the first try. After that, I realized I had recently accumulated a fresh bunch of Avios in my Iberia account, so I ran a test; I moved them over to BA and then tried BA—>Qatar again, all I got was the same suspicious activity / lockdown message. So pathetic and frustrating.

I’ve hit 7 days today and managed to move points from BA to Qatar. Reward flight gone.

There’s no advice we can give you, to be honest, except to say that if you were thinking of making an Avios redemption via another platform except ba.com, be VERY careful about moving Avios into your BA Club account in the preceeding 7-9 days.

Maybe a person with a massive avios balance can keep the pot split so then they could redeem without making last minute moves. Eg, if a person has 500k avios, maybe keep 180k iberia, 180k or 200k Qatar and the rest BA. Especially if the person is a solo traveller then they would be fine I guess.

Or is my thinking wrong? I know they should have better systems in place when we can transfer real money in a couple of clicks but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

    • The Original Nick. says:

Exactly. I always have a split between my IB and BA accounts.

    • John says:

Or just pre-transfer 2 weeks before you think you will need to make a redemption.

Normally it doesn’t matter if my bank transfers take a day – but the last time I actually needed to transfer money within seconds, it took 5 hours and I missed out on the opportunity that I had wanted to take.

  • Fazzy Bear says:

I have had this same issue for around a similar amount of time. Been at least a week.

  • Nigel T says:

Or perhaps simply BA trying to make life difficult for you when you want to book with another airline, masquerading as “security”? Perish the thought!

    • JDB says:

It makes little or no difference to BA, so you’ll need another conspiracy theory!

      • Paul says:

I’d agree it more likely than not to be incompetence and BA IT than a specific or targeted strategy to stop transfers or bookings,. But it does make a difference to BA when the fees are less on partners than they are via booking the same flights on BA.com!

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

This may not be a BA decision but that of IAG Loyalty who if there is fraud are the ones the fraud is against.

  • Marion says:

I have been try to transfer from Aer Lingus to BA and it keeps crashing
I spoke to a team member from the club and they said they would escalate the issue internally.
    Still not resolved…
    So bloody annoying

    • Ian says:

And there’s now a problem transferring to Loganair – you get an error message saying BA knows there is an issue and it’s working to resolve it. I won’t be holding my breath!

  • Ram says:

I booked a rewards flight on Qatar yesterday. Instant transfer of Avios from BA

  • Paul says:

I consolidated my other OH Avios via Finnair.
I think BA have lost the plot to be frank and the continuing farce which states the Avios are theirs and not yours, allowing them to behave as tin pot despots is outrageous.

  • Jason S says:

I have a feeling this is an anti fraud measure. I, like many others on flyertalk it appears, had my Avios emptied. The fraudsters insta-transferred to my linked Qatar privilege account and then transferred out from there. I got the points back but it took several months and was very painful dealing with two customer services teams who don’t liaise with each other. A slight delay probably helps mitigate the above. Just my guess, I have no particular intel but it would make sense.

    • John33 says:

Can someone explain to me why scammers would do this? What do they do with these Avios? Surely they can’t book a flight with them given that it would immediately be traced to the name and surname of the passenger flying?

  • Matarredonda says:

Unfortunately scammers are making life very difficult in so many areas and therefore security systems are being I trounced on top of what already exists leading to delays with inter Bank transfers a good example.
