BA appears to be putting 7-9 day delays on some Avios transfers to Qatar, Iberia, Finnair

A reader dropped me an email yesterday about a block that had been placed on transfers from his BA Club account.

He wanted to book a redemption via the Qatar Airways website. Since Qatar Airways does not acknowledge BA Household Accounts, the reader had paid £50 to transfer Avios from his wife to himself so their points were in one place.

He attempted to make the booking via the Qatar Airways website but found he was blocked.

This is what he got:

For clarity, and despite the message, there is NOTHING that the support team can do to help you. You need to sit and wait.

I looked into this and it appears to be a common problem in recent weeks. Unfortunately, it is a real issue for people who need to consolidate Avios in one account before making a redemption.

To put it simply: when you move Avios from another airline into British Airways Club, a block of 7-9 days on transfers OUT of BA Club may be placed on your account.

The same occurs if you transfer Avios between British Airways Club accounts.

The problem is that the very reason that people transfer Avios into British Airways Club (or between BA Club accounts) is that they WANT to make a redemption outside ba.com!

The main issue for readers is making Avios redemptions on the Qatar Airways website. Qatar Airways has a lot of extra availability on its own flights (albeit for more Avios in most cases), you can book 360 days in advance (vs 355 days via ba.com) and they have unique partners such as Garuda Indonesia, Airlink and Virgin Australia.

Here are some examples from this Flyertalk thread:

I got automatically ‘unlocked’ after 6/7 days. Did Aer Lingus > BA transfer on Monday, was unable to transfer points from BA to Qatar until Sunday.

Tried transferring more Avios, Iberia → BA and then BA → Qatar. Turns out Iberia → BA triggered the lock in my account again.

Just been able to transfer from BA to Qatar. Took just under 9 days.

I waited two weeks before trying my BA–>Qatar transfer again, and today it worked on the first try. After that, I realized I had recently accumulated a fresh bunch of Avios in my Iberia account, so I ran a test; I moved them over to BA and then tried BA—>Qatar again, all I got was the same suspicious activity / lockdown message. So pathetic and frustrating.

I’ve hit 7 days today and managed to move points from BA to Qatar. Reward flight gone.

There’s no advice we can give you, to be honest, except to say that if you were thinking of making an Avios redemption via another platform except ba.com, be VERY careful about moving Avios into your BA Club account in the preceeding 7-9 days.

I suspect that the recent increase in hacked accounts that have been reported will have something to do with it. Hacked accounts move Avios balances very quickly so maybe it’s actually a proactive security measure by BA. They should have advised account holders though if this is the case!

    • Danny says:

Could be solved with 2FA surely?

      • Novice says:

All they had to do was, every time someone was transferring some points, you would get a code via your phone which you would input and voila the transfer goes through. Hackers don’t have access to your phone to see the code which would not work if not used within 15 mins. A lot of companies do this so I don’t know why they didn’t.

        • Novice says:

Also, I remember reading years ago that hackers are the ones who like to break into systems but are not bad guys. The right term is cracker, who breaks into systems to do bad things. But everyone just seems to use hackers.

        • Ian says:

Are you seriously suggesting that BA’s IT department could competently implement such a solution?!!

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

    @Rob

Is this happening with the other airlines in the avios eco system or is it just with BA?

Are QR or IB doing the same with their members accounts if they do the same thing?

    • Matty says:

On my recent QR flights, every time I logged in to MMB I had to go through 2FA – OTP to my mobile to confirm it was me. Immediately after logging in, I was asked to update my mobile number. No way around this pop-up. Every time. Quite annoying.

  • Andrew says:

    I’ve had a few ones, recently with BA points to Qatar;

    – I moved 30,000 points, checked, and the system had moved 57,000 (my entire balance)
    – I made an Avios booking on Qatar app, all processed. A few days later there was a time change to flight, logged in and said to contact support. They locked my account and asked for an email copy of my passport and driving licence. I’ve flown 6 times with them. Took 4 emails, 4 phone calls and 3 weeks to get access again.

  • kevin86 says:

    Devaluation incoming?

  • Henry Young says:

That’s a great “heads up” and a reason to move all Avios from BA to Qatar immediately. I’m on a 30 year boycott of actually flying BA anyway – worst airline of it’s claimed class in the world !

  • Dawn says:

I’ve had an email saying my Qatar Avios points – 7000 of them will expire in a couple of months. Should I transfer them to my BA account as I’m not going to be able to use them before then?

  • Markdav says:

Can’t get my head around this. Why transfer Avios from BA to Qatar? I’ve linked both accounts so I can see & spend my Avios in BA or Qatar. What I’m I missing? Thanks
