Get a 25% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios – worth it?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios has launched a conversion bonus for anyone sitting on a pile of Nectar points.

Let’s take a look at the deal. Full details are on avios.com here.

The standard conversion rate of Nectar points to Avios is 400 : 250. This has remained unchanged despite two devaluations for people converting in the opposite direction.

As a Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsburys, Argos etc, you are giving up £2 of free shopping in return for 250 Avios. In other words, you are buying Avios for 0.8p. This is a decent deal.

Until 30th April, you will receive a 15% or 25% bonus on every transfer INTO Avios.

A one-off transfer will get you a 15% bonus.

An auto-conversion transfer will get you a 25% bonus. Assuming you are moving over your entire Nectar balance, you might as well activate auto-convert and then, if you wish, disable it later.

(For clarity, there is no bonus in the opposite direction. The rate from Avios into Nectar remains at 400:400.)

This looks pretty attractive. For every 400 Nectar points you convert, you will receive (with a 25% bonus) 312 Avios.

Put another way, you are giving up £2 of free shopping to earn 312 Avios, so you are ‘paying’ 0.64p per Avios. It’s an excellent return.

If you happen to be sitting on a pile of Nectar points with no real plan for them, you should seriously think about this deal.

What is the small print?

There doesn’t seem to be much, which is good:

  • The offer runs to 30th April
  • Transfers must be in multiples of 400 Nectar points
  • You can make multiple transfers in that period and get the bonus on all of them

It seems that anyone who already auto-converts their Nectar points into Avios will receive the bonus automatically.

I expect the bonus to post in arrears, not with the original transfer.

The usual caps apply – you can manually transfer a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points into Avios per calendar month so, as this offer does not straddle a month end, you are capped at 80,000 Nectar points. Automatic conversions are capped at a lower level – a maximum of 40,000 Nectar points per calendar quarter.

The only caveat I would make is to remind you that Marriott Bonvoy will become a Nectar transfer partner very soon – see here. If you value Marriott points as much as (or more than) Avios, you may want to hold off and see how good that deal turns out to be.

Never received the extra 25% last time and had no luck complaining to their useless support.

  • PaulM says:

to confirm best way is to set up auto convert then use the manual conversion and I would get my 25% bonus?

    • Rob says:

Set up auto convert and wait for them to convert!

      • Oliver says:

Thanks, I was asking myself the same question, but I’m wondering whether this will work for large Nectar balances – I’m sitting on 30,000 Nectar points and have set up auto-conversation. Will the 25% bonus apply to all my 30,000 Nectar points given that it will apparently take up to 3 months to convert them all (i.e. which will mean going beyond the April 30th deadline)? Thank you! FYI, I got the information about the 3-month period from the Avios website where it is stated as follows when you set up auto-conversion:

“Set up auto-conversion and sit back while your balance builds. Every week, in multiples of 400, we will automatically move a maximum of 40,000 Nectar points and 25,000 Avios in a three-month period.” – Thanks!

        • newbie says:

Hi I have just done this and it auto converted 40000 in one go. So your 30k should be fine

  • ADS says:

just to confirm that after Unlocking spend in the Nectar app … and waiting 24 hours … the Auto Conversion setup worked

I really dislike IT which doesn’t tell you WHY a process has failed … and Nectar is notorious for doing this !

  • Edmond Rose says:

Anyone received the bonus Avios yet? I have converted 400 Nectar points as a test and will see how long it takes – and whether the bonus Avios turn up – before trying a real amount.

    • David says:

They’ll turn up after the promotion has ended. In the terms and conditions :

Avios will be credited to members British Airways Club accounts within 28 days from the promotion end date.

      • Edmond says:

Many thanks. I tried to click on Ts and Cs from the Nectar app page about the promo, but it didn’t work….!

  • Rhys M says:

Edmond Rose – it can take over 30 days AFTER the redemption period ends for the bonus to arrive. Suggest you go all in and setup the auto convert to get the highest return.

  • Tariq says:

Any advantage to converting MR to Nectar then letting them auto convert to Avios? Or the exchange rate isn’t outweighed by the bonus?

  • joeseph says:

Would it be possible to convert some of my nectar points to avios for the bonus and then convert them back to nectar points in say a months time?

  • joeseph says:

    Oh ok,guess i hadn`t thought it through.
