News in brief:

No1 and Clubrooms lounges open at Heathrow Terminal 3

Late last year, we covered a major shake-up coming to the independent lounge scene at Heathrow’s Terminal 3.

If you’re a regular HfP reader then you’ll know Terminal 3 has the best selection of airline lounges of any airport terminal in the UK. Perhaps less known is its network of independent lounges, which includes the American Express Centurion lounge, Club Aspire and No1.

As we wrote in November, there were plans to fully refurbish both the Club Aspire and No1 lounges:

  • the existing Club Aspire lounge would be totally refurbished to become a Scandi-inspired My Lounge
  • the No1 Lounge would shrink marginally, mainly by losing the now-closed shower, spa and bedroom area
  • a new premium Clubrooms lounge would be built in the space given up by No1 Lounge

The No1 Lounge has been closed for redevelopment for around three months and reopened yesterday, transformed into two spaces: the No1 Lounge and a brand new Clubrooms space which features a la carte service.

Initial photographs look impressive, with some very Mediterranean-inspired interiors and a large, central olive tree (see below).

Fortuitously I am at Terminal 3 today as I head away for the Easter break and will stick my head into both. Stay tuned for reviews following the Bank Holiday.

You can book both on the No1 website. The Clubrooms (which requires a £15 supplement if using Priority Pass) is currently running an opening offer of 15% off when you book on the website and use the code CRLHR3-15. The offer runs until 16th May.

Lyft buys FREENOW – miles and points deals likely

Mercedes-Benz and BMW have given up on their attempt to make money in rideshare with the sale of taxi-booking app FREENOW to US group Lyft.

FREENOW operates in more than 150 cities across nine European countries. In the UK it is primarily used in London for black cab bookings. It is well behind Uber and Bolt in the rideshare market.

Lyft is picking up the business for €175 million which is peanuts given the valuation of Uber and indeed FREENOW’s earlier valuations.

What is interesting for HfP readers is that Lyft has partnerships with some miles and points programmes, including Hilton Honors. (We covered the Lyft / Hilton Honors partnership here for anyone heading to the US.) It would be good to see these extended to Europe in due course.

Oman Air goes double daily from Heathrow

Oman Air, which is soon to join the oneworld alliance, will resume double-daily flights to London later this year. It is also set to launch flights to Amsterdam with a 4x weekly service.

The airline currently flies once a day between London and Muscat, although it did previously offer a double daily service pre-covid.

The second service will begin in October 2025, initially on four days a week (Mondays, Fridays, Satudays and Sundays) before increasing to seven days by next summer. The two daily flights will operate approximately 12 hours apart, offering both day and night departures in each direction. Here are the timings for the second flight:

  • WY104 departs London Heathrow at 8:25am and arrives in Muscat at 7:35pm
  • WY103 departs Muscat at 1:40am and arrives in London at 5:55am (same day)

Here is the existing flight:

  • WY102 departs Heathrow at 8:50pm and arrives in Muscat at 7:00am the following morning
  • WY101 departs Muscat at 2:05pm and arrives in London at 7:10pm.

Oman Air is the only airline operating direct flights between London and Oman; British Airways has not returned since the pandemic.

Both flights will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft which Rob reviewed here. First Class has since been dropped, with the cabin now being sold as a ‘Business Studio’ upgrade akin to Malaysia Airlines.

Oman Air’s march towards oneworld membership continues and appears on target for a mid-summer accession. Its Amsterdam to Muscat flights will launch on the 1st July. Once it joins oneworld these should be a good option for picking up a redemption to the Middle East using Avios, even if the Heathrow flights have sold out.

Joining oneworld is only the latest stage of a major transformation program at the airline. You can read more about the project in my interview with Oman Air CEO Con Korfiatis here.

Lyft also has a partnership with Alaska.

Let’s see how the FREENOW acquisition pans out – in the US, I generally prefer Lyft to Uber. Usually (not always) shorter wait times, lower fares and better cars than Uber.

I don’t remember BA ever flying direct to Muscat ? Think it was a stop in either Bahrain or Abu Dhabi, prior to being culled.

    • Andrew says:

Though confusing it was still “direct” if it was the same plane and flight number. “Nonstop” is different and exactly as it sounds.

    • Nico says:

That’s still direct if same flight number, but not non stop, bit of a trick for sure.

    • TravelsWithMyHP says:

BA definitely flew non-stop to Muscat from LHR, we used the service in the Spring of 2018. Don’t remember much about what aircraft was used but it was overnight outbound and daytime inbound.

      • Adder says:

We flew BA79/80 direct, non-stop LHR-MCT in Dec 2019. Dreamliner service, as above outbound was overnight landing around 7am local time, inbound a day flight. Worked very well for us and a shame it hasn’t returned!

    • Paul says:

In the early 90’s BA operated the route via Dhahran using a Tristan L1011. Later the flight operated via AUH before finally going nonstop.

  • redlilly says:

Great to have a day flight option to Muscat without needing to transit in Doha, Dubai etc. Oman Air in economy is not bad, especially in extra leg room seats.

    • John says:

Taken them a few times (you can already redeem using QR avios) and it was always only moderately loaded, such that apart from passengers choosing to sit together as a family of 3, everyone in Y had at least 1.5 seats.

  • Iain says:

Can Amex Platinum holders still book No. 1 lounges for free? I recall last year we were given 4 free bookings (or something like that).

    • Rhys says:

      No

      • Nico says:

        Are those still free?

      • Bumblebee says:

I tried to book a few days ago and went all the way to the basket ,and it still was trying to charge we £15

        • Rhys says:

You still need to pay the £15 uplift for Clubrooms regardless of whether you book in advance or not.

          • The real Swiss Tony says:

Really? It was launched as a 6 month trial last summer but I’ve clearly missed any news that it has been extended.

          • Rob says:

            They haven’t.

          • Nico says:

I can’t see the 5 free booking passes on platinum for nb.1, some confusion it seems?

          • The real Swiss Tony says:

@Rob/Rhys it might be worth editing the comments here to stop this misleading anyone/other people wasting time trying to find these free bookings that don’t actually exist.

      • Rob says:

        No!

    • Travel Strong says:

      Colour me confused.

“Can Amex Platinum holders still book No. 1 lounges for free? I recall last year we were given 4 free bookings (or something like that).”

Rhys says: Yes 17 Apr 07:14

I’ve spent some time trying to figure this out this morning to rebook for Friday using Amex Plat, and returned to an even more confusing bunch of comments.

For clarity, should this initial reply actually have said “No” ?

      • The real Swiss Tony says:

        I concur.

Rhys got this wrong. The offer was not extended after 2024. Why the HfP correction isn’t more than the simple “No” from Rob at 10.14am is beyond me.

        • Rhys says:

Believe it or not I’ve had more pressing matters to sort today including interviewing Tony Douglas! I have corrected it now.

      • Iain says:

Like a lot of things at the moment, i expect the answer is that they themselves aren’t entirely clear either.

  • Simon says:

6.40am this morning and No.1 was pushing PP / LC holders to pay for Club Rooms and refusing access unless pre-booked… same old, same old unfort…. The 50% occupancy looked to be mainly family package tour visitors, but then it’s Easter weekend!

  • Polly says:

Re no 1.. heading to LGW later today, do l get a guest in with Plat biz priority Pass? And the 4 prebook passes? Tnx.

    • babyg_wc says:

youll be unlikely to pre-book for later today based on my experience… also I didnt know amex re-issued the 4 guess “included” prebooking passes in 2025 (havent been paying close attention)

      • Travel Strong says:

Have they though? Where is it confirmed, as when I go through it still tries to charge £6pp.

  • Can says:

Does Oman increasing flights suggest that BA will not restart flights to MCT in near future?

    • Rhys says:

Oman Air and BA can’t collude. I suppose it could be possible if you think Oman Air is mopping up all the capacity. But the bigger issue BA has is lack of aircraft.

      • Rob says:

They could codeshare, put the flights on ba.com and be happy enough soaking up £ from selling a few tickets.

        • Nick says:

They won’t be doing that. For BA to sell as a point-to-point standalone codeshare they would need to have a pricing team managing it, and there isn’t enough business to justify that (yes it would be BA, not WY, filing the fares, that’s how it works). The most they would do is have it as a connecting codeshare (e.g. to sell to Americans) but I doubt QR would allow that. Maybe if by chance most of the business comes from US cities that QR doesn’t serve.

  • Iain says:

Yes, you’ll get a free guest. I’m not sure how the free booking passes work but expect you’ll be too late to pre-book.
