For the last few weeks, Small Luxury Hotels of the World has been running a cashback offer with American Express.

The offer was meant to end on 15th August but has now been extended to 5th September.

You will receive £100 cashback on a spend of £300+ at participating SLH hotels worldwide. Cumulative spend is OK.

Small Luxury Hotels American Express cashback

Amongst other family cards, I have it on my Business Platinum card. Amex is now experimenting with offering hotel cashback deals to Business Gold and Business Platinum cardholders.

The offer is not well explained, unfortunately.

SLH is a marketing consortium, not a chain. This means that it isn’t clear to the average reader:

  • whether you must book via the SLH website or not?
  • whether bookings via other channels, such as Hilton (who market SLH hotels) or intermediaries such as Hotels.com count?
  • whether direct bookings count?

We know, having covered Amex offers for many years, that as long as you pay at the hotel you are fine. Booking a ‘pay at hotel’ rate via Hilton will be OK, if Hilton lists that particular property.

Do note that pre-paid bookings are specifically blocked from the offer. Whilst this is usually not actually true when it applies to Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott or IHG cashback offers, it may be true here if you book via the SLH website.

If (and I mean ‘if’, I don’t actually know) payment is taken by Small Luxury Hotels and not the individual hotels, and Amex is looking out for specific hotel retailer codes on your statement, the cashback will not trigger. I would guess that pre-paid rooms booked directly with a hotel on its own website should trigger the cashback.

Which hotels are taking part?

It’s a long list! Importantly, it isn’t just hotels in Europe which is usually the case with American Express offers. There are hotels taking part in Barbados, Japan, Mexico, Thailand and the USA.

You can download it here (PDF).

The UK list runs to 29 hotels which is 10 fewer than when this offer ran in 2024. There are some good names amongst them. These include:

Benefits of booking Small Luxury Hotels via Hilton

Hilton has a partnership with Small Luxury Hotels which allows you to book selected hotels via hilton.com.

Here is a reminder of the elite benefits for Hilton Honors members who book an SLH property via the Hilton website for cash or points:

  • Member (no status): member discount, complimentary standard Wi-Fi, complimentary late checkout, bottled water
  • Silver: 20% elite tier bonus, 5th standard reward night free, all ‘Member’ benefits
  • Gold: 80% elite tier bonus, complimentary breakfast for two, space-available upgrades, 5th standard reward night free, all ‘Member’ benefits
  • Diamond: 100% elite tier bonus, complimentary breakfast for two, space-available upgrades, 5th standard reward night free, all ‘Member’ benefits

You will also earn base points and elite night credits as you would at any standard Hilton hotel.

The list of SLH hotels participating in Hilton Honors is here.

Remember that:

  • not all SLH hotels participate in Hilton Honors
  • not all SLH hotels are taking part in the £100 cashback offer

You should also get a quote via Bon Vivant

SLH also has a programme for luxury travel agents. This can get you valuable extra benefits at no additional cost BUT not all SLH hotels take part – The Atlantic in Jersey (review here) didn’t play ball when we went a couple of years ago.

Our hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas can book these for you and as all Emyr bookings are ‘pay on departure’ they will trigger the cashback too.

You can contact Emyr via this page of HfP – don’t book an SLH property without seeing what he can do. The price will match the flexible room-only rate on the website but with substantial extra benefits, and he may be able to persuade the hotel to match any promotional offer too.

Remember that the cashback offer now runs until 5th September.

How to earn Hilton Honors points and status from UK credit cards (August 2025)

There are various ways of earning Hilton Honors points from UK credit and debit cards.  Many cards also have generous sign-up bonuses.

There are two dedicated Hilton Honors debit cards. These are especially attractive when spending abroad due to the 0% or 0.5% FX fee, depending on card.

You also receive FREE Hilton Honors status for as long as you hold the debit cards – Gold status with the Plus card and Silver status with the basic card. This is a great reason to apply even if you rarely use it.

We reviewed the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card here and reviewed the Hilton Honors Debit Card here.

  • Simon says:

I saw this offer yesterday afternoon and started looking at hotels but when I returned to save the offer last night it was no longer there on any of our cards.

  • Gordon says:

Had the SLH on my BAPP for a few days, of no use to me, so obviously didn’t save, it’s disappeared now, so must of been popular.

  • SamD says:

I used this offer twice (via 2 cards) two weeks ago, one booking directly with the hotel & the second via AMEX Travel both with payment due at the hotel. Both transactions were credited with the cashback.

    • Saw says:

Thanks, can I please ask if you paid directly at the hotel or if you were able to pay online in advance? Do you know if it has to be payment at check-out time only?

    • Tiberius says:

Any clues as to which hotels these were?

  • Shelly67 says:

In case of use to anyone else, I saved this offer a while back as was planning a stay at Foxhill Manor but then discovered only Dormy House was included. We checked out yesterday afternoon and the credit card was processed by the Dormy House card account so should trigger OK.

  • chelseafifi says:

Can recommend Bishopstrow Hotel lovely place and facilities, stayed in June using the offer, I pre paid for room on hotel website, which was under the £300, then once added food drinks on check out the cashback triggered.

  • John says:

Recently returned from Lisbon where two of my stays should have been eligible for a similar LHW offer. I mistakenly used Apple Pay at one property (not accepted for the offer), but more annoyingly, neither hotel had their correct physical address associated with their credit terminal, meaning the rebate was not triggered automatically and needs to be manually verified. Who actually pays the rebate…. Amex or the property?

    • JDB says:

The cost of these promotions is usually shared between Amex and the merchant with the split varying hugely.

  • D says:

Monkey Island has a 3 for 2 stay longer offer, as do a few other places, a bargain at the moment.

    • Rob says:

Shame Monkey Island isn’t on the cashback. I have been meaning to try this since it reopened, because I went there for a conference literally 30 years (before it was a hotel again) and found it fascinating.

What puts me off slightly is a) small rooms in the main hotel and b) having other rooms literally off the island in separate buildings.

      • D says:

You’re right to be a little hesitant, we had a 3 nighter a few years ago and they didn’t have upgrade availability on our first night, hence a very small room. But credit where it’s due when they were very proactive to upgrade our remaining 2 nights.

    • Gordon says:

First time I’ve heard Monkey island mentioned for many years! I stayed there regularly amongst others also the copthorne hotel in Slough, many many years ago, when i had a 6 month contract in shopenhangers road, pleasant stay throughout.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

I can’t be the only person who immediately imagines Guybrush Threepwood and the Goodsoup Hotel whenever this is mentioned 😀

  • chelseafifi says:

Bishopstrow currently have an excellent ‘Bramley Spa Break’ offer combined with the cashback from £450pn Overnight stay in a room of your choice, 75 minute Bramley ritual per person, £100 resort credit, Bottle of provence rosé in your room on arrival, Use of the spa facilities, indoor swimming pool, hot tubs and thermal suite (steam, sauna room and experience shower)
