Lombok (away from the Gilis) is like Bal1 30 years ago in many ways, far less development and fewer tourists but that is all changing fast.
Kuta/Koeta in the south is a nice mix with some great independent places to stay such as the Jivana resort and would be a good place for a few days before or after the Gilis (Gili Air would be my recommendation).
