I think it’s very often an A380 (that might not be your only issue, they tend to have a lot of tech issues and are regularly delayed on that route!)
Have you tried selecting seats before now?
We flew on this last December and I managed to get 2 of the best seats on the upper deck (possibly 53 J & K but you’d need to double check). There was so much personal space and privacy it was even better than CS. No climbing over anyone to get to the toilets – which incidentally are huge spaces up there!
As to why you can’t select a seat now, maybe they’re still in the process of confirming an equipment change?
