Having been offered no retention offer last month on my BAPP, I have now been offered 10k Avios for £5k spend in 6 months along with the usual Avios for spend over the year. Had a long think about it and took the offer. Get the feeling the pro-rata refund is coming to en end pretty soon though.
Out of curiosity I looked at the Avios site and found I could buy 15,000 for £279, less than the annual fee on BA Amex premium. I plan to downgrade to the free card in January having received a 2-4-1, and use that to buy them.
Tonight I tried to downgrade from the Bapp to the Blue card and was told that I wasn’t allowed as the option wasn’t showing on my account! I have been with Amex a number of years and have done this before without issue. This was via online chat and being fairly late, will try Brighton tomorrow. Has anybody else been told that the option to drop the card isn’t available?

And there lies your probable issue.

Got a 35k offer on my Amex Platinum having just passed the two year mark. No strings attached. Pretty pleased. I’ll wait until Jan to get the reset benefits then leave and hope the pro-rata refund is on the table. 😬

Good work. Just the wrong thread though.
I was offered nothing despite putting £10k through in 5 weeks. So I cancelled and had a refund. My thinking is I have the voucher so rather than leave in a drawer cancel till I know I can easily get another voucher ( with or without a bonus) and reapply then and cancel again as soon as achieved. The bonus is very welcome and I might be able to wait 2 years but the voucher is often more valuable given the saving you can make

What alternative card are you going to put your spend through?
£50 statement credit if I spend £15k in 6 months…
£50 statement credit if I spend £15k in 6 months…
Did you ask them to pull the other one?

Not sure why. Doesn’t the low level of that retention offer simply reflect the reality that Amex doesn’t need to do much to retain BAPP cardholders, unlike Plat ones?
The BAPP card has a USP that is widely considered to be as valuable as the annual fee, plus the superior Avios earnings per £ and they will probably bring back the TP offer as well.
Maybe I should do this even if I don’t want to cancel my card? I never do!
I got offered zilch on online chat. Copying and pasting the response which may be of interest to others:
“Unfortunately, there are no retention offers triggered at the moment.
Account Opened: Feb 22, 2024, you can certainly check back with us before the renewal date, we would be happy to check for you.
Actually, retention offers varies from card product to card product and the spending behaviour of the account, account tenure etc. Therefore, retention offers gets triggered by the system automatically after calculating these parameters. Therefore, you may expect better retention offers in the near future as long as your tenure increase.”
I proceeded to cancel 😛
I have renewal due on 6th Jan, and just checked for retention offers and was advised there wont be any until after renewal so to check back mid january. Does that sound like nonsense to anyone or is that likely legitimate?

Which terms and conditions make you think it’s ‘nonsense’?
And what do you consider ‘legitimate’ here?
The sense of entitlement of some people here…I have renewal due on 6th Jan, and just checked for retention offers and was advised there wont be any until after renewal so to check back mid january. Does that sound like nonsense to anyone or is that likely legitimate?

The sense of entitlement of some people here…Let me clarify my statement. Does that seem like valid advice? I have no issue if no retention offer is available whatsoever. I have just had far too many experiences where an advisor has given incorrect advice. No entitlement here, happy getting nothing, but worth checking.
12th Jan is my annual renewal date.
Got offered £50 for £15k in 6 months today, which isn’t attainable anymore. I’m not interested in the economy only voucher, so considering either going to Platinum or just down to a basic cashback for 2 years.
Assuming I can use either of those cards to pay/use the existing BA vouchers? I’ve redeemed it already for later in 2025, but just thinking ahead in case any plans change. Also, assuming either of those would also let me rejoin BAPP in 2 years time for another bonus?

Any Amex is fine to allow you to pay the fees if needed again. They would also allow you to reapply for the BAPP in 2 years ( as things stand)
Got offered 10k Avios for £5k spend within the next 6 months.
Have been with Amex for a number of years. This account for 9 years & another account before that!
First time ever asking about my options, as I have run out of card surfing bonuses & at some point I need to break from Amex.
Been opffered a retention like others of the £5k spend for 10k avios options. After being offered the dismal £50 credit offer a couple of times last year, I have just been offered an additional 10k Avios for £5,000 of spend in 6 months.
I mentioned that I was not convinced the fee was worthwhile given it’s recent(ish) increase and the recently-announced BAEC changes and asked whether there was a retention offer. I was offered a downgrade to the free card so I asked again for the retention offer and was offered the 10kAvios/£5kspend offer
After asking to cancel due to increased cost and more difficult to achieve the target for the voucher, was initially asked to confirm address for cancelling. I had to ask specifically if there was an avios retention offer available, which was then checked with manager before coming back with the 10k avios for £5k spend in 6 months offer. Keeps me interested for another year before decision time again.
