Well if that’s the new normal, a £50 statement credit for £15k spend, it seems like quite a change of heart – now somewhere between a polite two fingers and calling the cardholder’s bluff. It always seemed odd that any retention was offered on the BAPP so maybe they have worked that out now.

A £50 statement credit is a hilariously rubbish offer. Good on Amex for not chucking points at a bunch of chancers.

£50 is precisely £50 more than I was offered. We’re putting c.£2.5 through it every month.

At the weekend I asked for a retention offer and was offered 10,000 avios for 6k spend in 6 months.

I asked if there was any better deal and was informed that’s my lot. I said thanks and will downgrade once I’ve used some of the hotel offers on my account.

This today, except it was a £5k spend target not £6k.

With the increase in fees I asked today about a retention offer, I spend around £50k per year on this card and easily achieve the 241 and had the extra tier points.
I was offered a £50 statement credit if spend a further £15k in the next 6 months. 0.34 % cash back effectively.
I’m really struggling to understand why others are offered 10k poits and my business just isn’t valued. What am I missing?
I pay everything within a day or two of spend and have never been late or had anything queried.
My app chat ended with “ Your relationship with Amex is highly valued “ I really do feel that it is.

I’m wondering if the retention offers are based on spend. I just phoned Amex for a separate reason, but then discussed the £300 fee – because it’s just hit my statement. I got the impression from what was said that the offers are based on what they think you can spend. But when I asked for clarification this wasn’t confirmed.

I think they’ve decided, from my spending history, that £15k in the next 6 months is achievable, and then I’ll get the £50 credit which would make the annual fee £250 not £300.

I tend to do my main BAPP spending from Feb to whenever I reach £10k (soon to be £15k), to get my 241. Then we switch spending to my partner’s card to get theirs. So if they’re looking at my spend from Feb (companion voucher start date) to August (fee date) they WILL see at least £10k spend and may think I can reach another £15k between August and Feb.

If it’s an algorithm based on spend, it may explain why we’re getting different offers. Someone may have already said this – if so, apologies for repeating it.

Going forward, from next Feb we will need to spend £30k not £20k a year to get our two companion vouchers, and our annual fees will be £600 not £500. I’ll need to look into that. If Amex are going to penalise us for spending that much, maybe we’ll just have 1 card from next year onwards and be a bit more imaginative when looking for travel bargains. I’d like to explore Europe a bit more, rather than our usual USA trips. Anyway – that’s another discussion for another time.

    Same for me.

To add a data point – offered £50 statement credit for £15k spend in 6 months

Was just offered 10,000 Avios for £5k spend in the next six months. Declined as I really do want to focus spend on other cards and the attractiveness of the BAPP has reduced for me, as someone who always redeems for a solo discount, with the spend threshold changes, etc.

I may come back once the two year fallow period is up, if there’s a decent signup bonus on. Will otherwise do all my Avios collecting via the Barclaycard (the voucher is inferior, but I still manage to get good value out of it).

As another data point – have just been offered 10k Avios if I spend £5k in the next 6 months. Have accepted because this is do-able (am about to book BA flights) – and I’m also around 6 months from my next renewal date.

Got offered the £50 statement credit for £15k spend in 6 months on wife’s account. No ‘Avios’ offers available on the account when we specifically asked about it.

Offered £50 for £15k spend in 6 months. Renewal is due next week. Bah humbug.

Just hit my spend target 6 months in and triggered the companion voucher. Asked for a retention offer and immediately given the 10k Avios for £5k spend over 6 months. (Via chat).

Took the BAPP card out in May, triggered the 60K bonus & 2 4 1, which are both in my Ba A/C. Currently have 5.5k sitting, waiting to be transferred.

Should I wait until the 5.5k are in my Avios a/c before contacting them to ask to move down to the free Amex card and see what they offer

Another 10k in Avios for £5k spend is worth keeping the card for

@SteveR – if you downgrade to the free card, you won’t lose the avios, so no need to wait

Phoned up to downgrade & was told you have to apply online for a new card & the system will pick up you have an existing card!!

    Seems very bizarre

Was just offered 10,000 Avios for £5k spend in the next six months. didn’t have to ask for it, think they might have had a technical issue at their end as she asked me if she could tell me all the benefits and disappeared for a minute then just came back with the offer 🙂 accepted.

Another £50 credit for £15k spend in the next six months. I’ve taken no action for now and will try again in a couple of days once I can follow through on the cancellation if I wish to

No retention offer given after request made. Will try again soon.
Also the agent clarified that ANY (their capitals) Amex card can be used to back up companion vouchers use, so I may just abandon BA cards and stick with my ARCC for the moment and have a rethink of strategy. Presently have 2 CV’s sitting with no plans to use.

Offered £50 for £15k spend in 6 months.

Same here for P2 – extremely unlikely we’ll hit that, but hey ho!

I have also been offered the £50 for £15k spend in 6 months. I declined the offer (as I won’t hit the spend intentionally) and the agent advised that I get back in touch in 2/3 months when they are likely to have a different offer available on my account.

£50 statement credit for £15000 spend in 6 months for me too! I even said I would leave , wait 2 years and get a good sign up bonus hoping to trigger some positive reaction – the agent just said ‘good idea’ !

Was offered £50 credit for a £15,000 spend in the next 6 months. ‘No other offers are available to you’ Disappointing but no choice but to accept, although I’m unlikely reach £15k
