Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is exactly two years since I last ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

Without a huge team behind me, any changes to Head for Points will always be ‘evolution not revolution’.  That said, because there are now two of us there is more flexibility.  Some of the benefits of that in recent months have been:

Logo without text PNG

the Christmas party, which could never have been done without a second pair of hands (the fact that I’d never done it before is proof of that)

the introduction of video to our reviews and the launch of a YouTube channel

increased review coverage, both of hotels and via press events such as the recent Cathay lounge launch

letting Anika write 95% of Shopper Points, freeing up more of my time for HfP

On the short list for improvements is:

an improved mobile site

the introduction of a Q&A page where readers can post questions which other readers can answer (this will NOT be a forum, it will be a specific Q&A page)

the reintroduction of a luxury hotel booking service (coming in January)

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what we do. After all, we look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and we can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the thousands of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you? (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob [at] headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2017.

A Q&A site would be great. You might want to consider a stackexchange.com site as their format is great for Q&A.

Just a simple one for me. A lot of the site’s static assets, like the banner in the header, need to be offered in higher quality to devices that request them. A lot of the images are really blurry on higher resolution (e.g. Apple’s “retina” screens) devices. Easy fix and will stop me from twitching every time I see it.

Which aircraft is best for BA first?

Also, which destination is best value for points on first? I don’t want to go Middle East. Long haul please

Their Boeing 707 to Canada was pretty good.

I’ve seen the 787-9 looks pretty nice. Anyone?

        • Rob says:

Club World is very pleasant if you get the tiny cabin at the front which only has two rows of seats (row 6 and row 7). See my review of my Abu Dhabi flight on one.

I disagree with lots of the comments here about O/T queries. I have learned a lot from these and also gained a lot. Limit them to just one topic per day maybe but they are essential to the life and soul of this site! I would not visit as often without them!

I think the Q&A section should hopefully take care of giving this a home?

      • Rob says:

No it wont! It would remove questions but not ‘here is a new deal I found’.

If we do Q&A, though, I need everyone to pop over and take a look at the questions and help out, or people will just gravitate back to posting in the articles.

I’d be happy to help out if it was on a system that made it easy to receive updates and group/merge questions.

I’d go for 8 vs 6 Recent Comments as well if it is an option

    10 would be even better

Hi Rob, firstly the site is great as it is, if I had one improvement it would be as many have said, to find a “home” for O/T comments. To be fair to the individuals (me included) there isn’t anywhere else to comment at the moment, if you provided a place for them, then I’m sure we will post them there. The odd comment here and there is fine, it’s the hi-jacking that hacks me off, it usually “has anyone had their Avios/bonus Avios for………” followed by 30 yes, no’s, wait, etc. I think O/T are different from the Q&A that some people mention, I think the Q&A is more like the F/T dashboard, (which is a great source of information), something like that with simple buttons directing us to relevant content would be great. Thanks again for everything you do. Adrian

I think we also need to be careful about risking the ‘community’ element of the site, which would auffer if there was excessive tightening up of comments. Whilst some important articles may often be hijacked, it is also true that some rather dull pieces of news don’t inspire much questionning and an OT diversion can be fun.

      • Lawro says:

Agreed. The camaraderie on here and the communal effort in finding a workaround or different angle to deals to exploit maximum value is part of the value of this site rather than the sometimes aggressive experience during discussions on Flyertalk.
I agree with the comments above suggesting a daily bits thread so that other articles remain uncluttered.
While the questions about using/cancelling/downgrading the BAPP can get repetitive, a Q and A section should help with that.
Like others, I feel I gain as much from the info and knowledge garnered in the comments as the articles themselves. Especially on a slow news day the OT comments are the reason I’ll still come back and check the site every couple of hours to make sure I haven’t missed any golden nuggets. Or any of Harry’s comments for that matter

Sterling work Rob and Anika, many thanks and a Happy New Year to all!

  • Noggins says:

Perhaps the Q&A idea captures this but, for me, the only gap in an otherwise brilliantly useful service is how to ensure locking in the best possible arrangements when there is no flexibility in terms of dates or destinations. We have been able to travel to far away places as a result of being shown deals and being able to be a bit spontaneous but where we have fixed travel plans (eg we need flights in November to Abu Dhabi and return from Mauritius) we have to rely on there being an offer that is flagged between now and then that can be made to work. Otherwise we might struggle to stumble across the best solution – despite all the ‘learning the tricks’ that the site helps with.
Happy New Year Rob and Anika – and thanks for a great site.

What do you mean by a luxury hotel booking service? Are you a Virtuoso travel agent / Preferred Partner with FS / Dorchester / Oetker Rob?
