Chasing my 1,500 bonus Membership Rewards points from Admiral

After my success in chasing up my missing Mr Porter points, I turned my attention to my missing 1,500 Membership Rewards points from the Admiral promotion last November.

As I originally wrote here, Amex offered 1,500 bonus Membership Rewards points to anyone who took out an insurance policy from Admiral. They were presumably hoping that people would buy an expensive car insurance policy instead of a £2.14 weekend UK travel insurance policy, but that’s tough!

No bonus points had turned up. I was not surprised, though, as the transaction went through my statement as Rock Insurance Services – Admiral’s underwriter.

In theory, Amex has until 28th February to post the points. However, in general these things usually post quickly or not at all, so I felt it was worth chasing.

Yesterday morning, I fired off the following email via the Secure Messaging Centre:

Hi. In November 2012, you ran a promotion for card holders in conjunction with Admiral Insurance. This offered 1,500 bonus Membership Rewards points for taking out an Admiral insurance policy.

On November 27th, I took out a travel policy with Admiral. This appears on my card statement dated 27th November under the heading of Rock Insurance Services Crawley, for £2.14.

It is now 2 months since I purchased the policy but I have not received the 1,500 bonus Membership Rewards points. Can you please add these to my account?

Early yesterday evening, I got a response saying that my complaint had been escalated.

And, a couple of hours later, I had my points!

    Hi this reminds me has anyone got the 5,000 points for doing an Amex FX transfer in Nov/Dec. ?
    My partner and I did a transfer each of a £1000 but we both don’t appear to have got them yet. is it time to chase or should we wait? Thanks

      Yup got the 5000 bonus MR points for the £100 FX conversion today – I think in total cost me £15.43

      Got mine today after a chaser (to the FX people, not to Amex MR) on Sunday. But it may have been part of the general awarding of points for this one!

    What about the 500 points for making a conversion between Nov/Dec; Is anyone still awiating that?

    I completely forgot to buy the Admiral insurance!

    Received 25 points for the FX transfer today (for my transaction of £253), but no sign of the 5000 bonus. For those who got the 5000 today, did it appear with the ‘base’ points? Or did you receive the base points a few days earlier?

      I got 12 base points and 5000 bonus on two lines on my MR Statement

    I am speaking with their executive customer relations team tomorrow on another matter and will be expressing my concerns about this.

    I know we are all taking advantage of these offers but the point for me is that the system should not require my or anyone else’s constant attention.

      My reply was also “let’s wait 48hrs and see” kinda thing. Seems it really depends on who reads your message!

      As for chasing points, I keep a spreadsheet of offers I am exploiting and when they should post, and shockingly, I have to chase at least 25% of them! Seems it is often policy to offer bonuses to sucker in the Joe Soaps with the full intention of not posting the points unless chased! Obviously the majority of non-serious points collectors like the sound of the offer and buy, yet never remember the points subsequently, especially when a “your points will post at some distant date in the misty future” line is given. It’s like purposeful short-changing customers and is essentially fraudulent!

        I agree. If a promo is offering bonus points, they should go on immediately, as with the Amex Travel bonus.

        This also makes good business sense. After all, would you have used Amex FX Transfers again whilst you were still waiting for your bonus from last time? I doubt it.

        Tesco has got a bit better at this, with Entertainment points now going on immediately instead of at the quarter end. I think only Tesco Wine now delays adding bonuses until the last minute.

    Currently chasing the missing 18,000 points from the miss-advertised double avios promo in December where they advertised for over 3 weeks that it was 16 avios per £ at the apple store.

    They’ve now been given 7 days to post the missing avios or send me a cheque for £303 which is the BA purchase price for the avios.

    The can’t deny the adverts as I took screen grabs of the screen several days apart!

    The 5,000 bonus points for the currency exchange posted yesterday, a good month after the original points for the FX transaction itself.

    Hi – I only started reading this blog after Christmas, but it just so happens that I renewed my admiral car insurance using my Virgin Amex on the 8th November. Does anyone know if there’s a way to back claim these miles?

      You probably could if you had the right card, but unfortunately this offer was only open to holders of Amex cards that earn Membership Rewards points, ie Platinum, Gold and Green.
