Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Tesco Phone Shop offering up to 10,000 Clubcard points (24,000 Avios) with ‘pay monthly’ phones

Tesco Phone Shop has brought back bonus Clubcard points on a number of ‘pay monthly’ phone contracts.

Now, buying a mobile phone is of course a fiendishly complex task if you are determined to get the best deal. You should still shop around carefully before signing up to any of these plans.

On the face of it, though, some of the deals are looking OK.  Take the Blackberry Curve 9320.

Tesco want you to take a 24 month contract at £22 per month. That is a total of £528. The phones comes with 300 call minutes, unlimited texts and a 500MB monthly data allowance.

10,000 Tesco Clubcard points gets you 24,000 Avios points or 25,000 Virgin Flying Club miles. If you value an Avios at 1p then you are getting £240 back in Avios.

These are deals are not as generous as those on offer last year, when you could pick up 25,000 Clubcard cards for a new phone!  You also need to compare deals with other operators, as Tesco Phone Shop is unlikely to have the cheapest headline price.  As an overall package, though, there might be some decent deals here.

Just a heads up that it takes around 3 months for the Clubcard points to post.

    • Nick says:

Yep. And, sometimes, even longer. I actually called them up last time to check when, exactly, the points would be credited. I was told they couldn’t say, but would definitely be on my November statement. This, it turns out, is not true. Tesco have looked at it and whilst they accept the advice I was given was incorrect, they have done nothing about it. Those points were needed to book honeymoon flights, so I’ve had to significantly rearrange plans. A not-inconsiderable pain.

The other word of warning is that you will be dealing with Tesco Phone Shop, which is incredibly painful.

  • Sam says:

Thanks for the heads up – I got my other half a Samsung S3 mini with 25k bonus points – was unsure 2 months later how long I need to leave it before chasing. Also forgot to take screenshot of points which could come back to haunt me I feel.

  • Dudeabides says:

Yes i’ve been on the phone to them, it seems that the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

  • danksy says:

My mate ordered a phone last year at 25,000 cc points, and complained bitterly when they didnt arrive within 2 months… cue 25,000 points arriving, then …..guess what a month later the original 25,000 points arrived. 😀

  • claire yerramasu says:

I had some problems with reclaiming 20,000 points but had the original copy of the order clearly stating the points. I was passed between my contract provider and tesco and did get the points and the phone was a great phone and i used anyway for 2 years. bonus. There may be some chasing involved in crediting them so best to check and make sure they are added on. It was only possible to get the points after 3 points of paying the monthly contract.
