British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

I have abandoned avios collecting now – they have become too devalued and availability so poor. I’m going to use my £150 tesco vouchers for double up to get some stuff I was going to buy anyway. Except a pretty good ps4 deal is tempting me…

    • harry says:

Availability has improved & is now guaranteed (I wonder if this is partly because of an imminent sell-off?)

Admittedly much easier if you can plan ahead T-355 days.

    • Lucifa42 says:

Is that a tesco boost deal to get the PS4? I have lots of vouchers to use up, can you give me the details?
      Thanks

      • Rob says:

From tomorrow, the rumour is that EVERYTHING at Tesco Direct will be included in the new round of Boost at 2x face value.

  • Brian says:

All printers selling at a premium to other places. Eg the MG4250 is only £44 at John Lewis

  • Andrew says:

Epson printer is priced at £49 online…

  • neuromancer says:

I really want a bonus when you convert Heathrow Rewards… It’s been ages since the last one. By the logic that they want to boost 3rd party earnings this may happen soon.

  • Jamie says:

My CC points auto converted to Virgin FC on 27/10/15, so I was pretty damn annoyed when I received an email about the 15% bonus 2 days later. However I checked my FC account late yesterday and found they had also added the bonus. Happy days!!

  • lbc says:

“the small print says that you must have received an email telling you about the deal to qualify. I find it hard to believe that this is true because Tesco is openly promoting it, but you should be aware. To date, no-one has received an email!”

=> why is Tesco so s*** at what they do… amazing…

  • Isolde says:

I transferred £100 yesterday (31st October) before reading Liz’s comments and before Raffles added the warning to the article. I e:mailed Clubcard today explaining that I thought the text on the website was misleading as the start date was only mentioned in the T&C yet prominence was given to the end date. I asked if they could make a goodwill gesture to top up the transfer. Within 60 minutes I had a telephone call explaining that they would add £20 to my account and transfer it, effectively giving me the bonus.

So although the launch was a bit of a mess, Tesco are willing to do “the right thing”. For anyone else who leapt too soon it would be worth contacting Clubcard. Hope that helps someone.

    • Kathy H says:

Thanks Isolde – Just checked our BAEC and we only received 24000 miles and no bonus. I have emailed Tesco so will see what happens. I agree it is all a bit of a fiasco. Not a happy bunny.

  • Liz says:

That is brilliant news – I hope Andrew sees this note and does the same!

    • harry says:

Told you lot that I heard it from the inside: customer services have a 3 line whip to be nice & say yes to all reasonable requests. They are genuinely trying to improve CS – which has been appalling in the past, but will I hope be better in the future.

    • Andrew says:

Andrew has just seen this and Andrew has just emailed Clubcard…

Champagne is not yet on ice, nor breath held…

      I hope for the ‘Isolde-solution’ not the ‘redrules-response’… 😀

      • Andrew says:

Response received from Tesco – apparently I will get the bonus points – at the end of the period (so Ryan et al., I think you get the normal points and then the bonus later… – and they have offered a goodwill gesture…

I will be back in touch with Tesco if I don’t get the bonus to review my level of goodwill 😉

[I’ll be able to comment more tomorrow – as I’m in the position of making one transfer before this flipping date (based on points being saved for just this situation) and one after (based on the latest award of vouchers)…]

        • Liz says:

Andrew: Hope it all works out ok for you. I did 3 transfers today across 3 different family accounts. I also did another small one in my name to see if I get any bonus on that – although doubtful but you never know. Will just have to wait it out and see if the bonuses post before the 30th Nov.

          • Andrew says:

I was told bonuses would post by 28 December – I have that in (email) writing…

I also did a transfer today so will see what posts tomorrow…
