Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How HfP clogged up the UK Avis network this weekend

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A couple of weeks ago I ran this article about a shockingly generous Avios promotion run by car rental group Avis.

If you hired a Group C or above Avis car for three days, starting on December 8th, 9th or 10th, you would receive 18,700 Avios points.

Living in London, where car rental prices don’t drop too much at weekends, I didn’t fully understand how cheaply you could rent a car outside Central London.  The answer is ‘very cheaply’.

Avis 350

Head for Points was the only site of scale in the UK to publicise this offer.  It was actually aimed at members of Iberia Plus in Spain, and indeed the Avios will be dropped into an Iberia Plus account.  The small print specifically said that UK rentals would count though ….

It seems we created a bit of carnage at Avis depots around the UK.  Here are a few quotes from the HfP comments over the weekend:

Just picked up my car from Cambridge branch. The manager said that they’d been inundated with Spanish rentals and they’re simply not accepting any more bookings as he’d had to chase around to find enough cars for everyone. He was surprised to see lots of Spanish reservations but he had checked with head office and said that these rentals will all be eligible for the 18,000 Avios promotion.

Booked a Group E for €49.18 from Peterborough. Very friendly clerk told me I was the fifth person today with a Spanish booking. They had suspected some sort of fraud and checked it with HO who told them about the promotion. He offered to let me leave the car there as I live 35 miles away, but I’d already pre paid for NCP parking for my own car. He also said they were now short of cars.

I ‘picked up’ 2 cars today. Was planning on driving them round the corner onto a street lit residential area i’d found on google earth but the guy on the Avis desk was really helpful. He waived both £12 refuelling charges and asked me to take the keys but leave the cars in the Avis compound as would be safer. He said he’d had c.20 bookings via Iberia and knew the score for Avios so knew it wasn’t some sort of fraud trick on Avis.

Apparently this was causing huge issues at Avis in Liverpool today. Many many bookings and not enough cars. I set my parents onto this offer and my mum was lucky and got a car. She overheard plenty of folk in there asking if they could just leave the cars there as they didn’t want them anyway!

Picked up my rental this morning from Basingstoke and was upgraded to a Skoda Octavia. I don’t know how Skoda have managed to make a car so boring but they have. The lady at AVIS said that there had been a lot of customers taking advantage of the deal.

Same over here. Their system went down in the morning, when it came back up, they had 17 more bookings. Completely out of cars as well – but they had no idea why, and I didn’t hang around to explain things. Hoping for the best.

I picked mine up today – Avis’s systems were down and reservations had to be completed manually. The attendant told me that there had been such a huge number of cars rented through this promotion and that it had meant that they had no more cars available for hire in their fleet. I was asked “Is this yet another Avios booking” when I arrived there.

So, erm, sorry Avis.  But you did get quite a few bookings out of it!

PS.  If you did a booking under this promotion, remember that you are meant to refuel the car – and provide a receipt – however little mileage you have done.  Avis can fine you if this is not done.

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards

How to get FREE car rental status and other benefits via UK credit cards (April 2024)

If you hire a car in the UK, you can get special benefits (discounts, upgrades, free additional drivers etc) if you have elite status with a car rental programme. You can get elite status for free via certain American Express cards.

The Platinum Card and American Express Business Platinum

The Platinum Card from American Express and American Express Business Platinum come with two free car hire status cards. Your supplementary Platinum cardholder can also receive status in their own right.

From Avis, you receive President’s Club status in Avis Preferred. This gets you up to 25% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a guaranteed one class upgrade. For weekend rentals you will receive a two class upgrade, subject to availability.

From Hertz, you receive ‘Five Star’ status in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. This gets you up to 15% off standard rates, a free additional driver and a one class upgrade, subject to availability.

Hertz also offers Platinum cardholders a 4 hour grace period on rentals. Your final day is treated as 28 hours, so a 1pm pick up with a 5pm return the following day is only charged as one day, not two days. We wrote about the Hertz / Platinum 4 hour grace period here.

The Platinum Card also comes with full car hire insurance with no obligation to pay for the rental via American Express. You can refuse any attempts to sell you additional insurance at pick up. This benefit has substantial value if you rent on a regular basis.

You can find more details on the two Platinum cards, and apply, in our full reviews linked below. You can apply here for the personal card and here for the business card.

Just rung the depot he said if you will have done less then 75 miles you WILL get charged irrespetcive of whether i provide a receipt of any kind for however much fuel i have used. CHARMING….

Cheers Avis for a another rip off scam! Oh well be warned people looks like im being charged i did complain he did say its in the term and conditions…when i said that was never offered or explained to me he was like a robot and then had the cheek to say “well everyone that hires a car does over 75 miles” REALLY….

    • TGLoyalty says:

Maybe the T&Cs are different in every depot but can’t see anything about 75 mile minimum with a refuelling charge.

Does have to go back full

There isn’t a EZ fuel option I didn’t take which takes about paying if you don’t bring back a receipt but I’m surprised anyone did take out these options to sit on your drive

      • TGLoyalty says:

Should read there is an EZ fuel option.

FYI is everyone else getting desktop mode on their phone for the site?

      • Nick says:

Thats the point. It doesn’t show it on my rental t and c’s only on the website!! And of course HFP readers!!!

It states on my paperwork “If you drive less than the distance shown in the Fuel Charges section (EZ Fuel Charge) of your Location Specific Condition and do not provide a fuel, you must pay our EZ Fuel charge…..”

In other words as per the website drive less than 75 miles an it costs £12 + Vat. The fact they never tell you this and the fact its not on any paperwork (mileage minimum) i got with the car is a cheek in my book!

        • Lady London says:

For car hire be aware that appparently even if you book checking the t’s and c’s on the website, car hire firms seem to claim that you sign a new set of t’s and c’s when you pick up the car and that the ones signed on pickup supersede any website conditions you may have agreed to. So it’s worth checking at pickup even if you nailed everything when you made the arrangements online or otherwise ahead.

I’m possibly going to have to take Hertz to court over a fast one that was pulled on me a few months ago where they handed a completely different set of costings, I had already verbally gone over the deal I had arranged with them before signing, when they handed me the little slip to sign I said “does it say what we’ve discussed” I haven’t got my glasses (as I could not find them and apparently had rushed out to collect the car at a remote location (due to the rate) without them. They said “Yes” and I signed. The receipt was not uploaded to the site as usual and I had to chase whereupon I found out they had charged me about £330 instead of about £69. I consider this to be misrepresentation and fear I will have take them to court. Sadly as historically Hertz corporate has sorted out locations immediately when foreign locations have tried such tricks in the past.

Very good experience here. Picked up the car at the Guoman Hotel next to Tower Bridge. Very nice person on the till when I picked up on Thursday and he mentioned that he had a crazy amount of rentals due on Friday. Anyway, got upgraded again to a lovely little BMW and have enjoyed running around London all weekend in a sporty little number. I’ll use them again, it was very handy and a five minute walk in to work after I dropped it off.

    • Rob says:

Used to walk through or past that lobby every weekday for 14 years on the way from Wapping to my City office!

  • Nick says:

Rung back again to speak someone else and the tune has changed! If i (others) do less than 75 miles and provide a receipt (initially he said as close as possible to drop off) then said today showing the car was fuelled up and write the reg of the car on they will waive the fee like others have said…as per the terms and conditions. Pity they failed to mention that previously just a flat NO you will be charged.

  • Mapman says:

Collected mine on Friday from Ashford International. Extremely friendly chap behind the counter and an upgrade to a red Fiat 500L – quite funky. Apparently this was due to my Avis Preferred status, although I booked through the Iberia Avios offer link and didn’t put my Preferred number in the system. They must have matched it automatically. I did check that my Iberia Plus number was in the system which it was.
Have tootled around a little this weekend although have been somewhat under the weather and will take it back later this morning, fuelling near the depot and making sure they see the receipt.
Fingers crossed the Avios post in the coming two months.

  • Matt says:

Manchester South was empty after I collected on Saturday afternoon…Apparently I was their ‘sixth’ avios rental of the day!

  • Wally1976 says:

Good luck to everyone with the points posting and avoiding nasty charges for fuel, damage etc. I decided to opt out of this one for a number of reasons including these.

  • Red says:

O/T: Am I making this up or did I not read a week ago or so that Android Pay were doing a special offer with Uber. If you paid your Uber fare with Android Pay you would get 50% off your ride up to the value of £5 in December, for up to 10 rides.

I took two trips this weekend in London and my email receipts from Google don’t show a discount.

    • Rob says:

Yes, they were doing that. Meant to write about it. Forgot …. (the party last week messed us up completely, in many ways!)

    • Alan says:

I remember it too and it’s mentioned in an article here – http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/android-pay-uk-promotion/, but it’s not on the list of current Android Pay promotions

      • Red says:

        Thanks Rob and Alan.

Might drop Google an email and asking what is going on as a number of places were reporting this offer. It was the reason why I used Android Pay to cover the cost otherwise I would have just used my AMEX for the Avios points.

  • Lev441 says:

Guy in front of me in birmingham avis on Friday asked if he could just keep the car in the car park and drop the keys off on Monday… they agreed but the lady was mad as she said They had so Few cars available!!
