Hilton Honors increases some hotel points redemption rates with no notice

Hilton Honors has quietly increased some redemption rates over the last few days, with no notice.

Hilton has no ‘official’ redemption chart any longer, of course.  Rewards are dynamically priced based on the current room rate BUT there is also a cap in place.

This is actually a good system, because it encourages redemptions where you may otherwise not bother.  If a hotel is selling very cheaply for cash in the low season, the cost of a Standard Reward Night will fall too.  The value will be around 0.25p – 0.33p per point.

On peak dates, the cap kicks in.  This is where you can achieve the best value for your points.

I have checked the majority of the Hilton properties in London and there are no changes.  The priciest hotels (Conrad St James, Lincoln Plaza – photo below – and London Hilton on Park Lane) remain capped at 80,000 points.  The cheapest, DoubleTree Greenwich, remains capped at 30,000 points.

However, looking at reports on FlyerTalk it seems that this could be a progressive roll-out rather than a ‘big bang’ change, so perhaps London still has increases to come.  Asia seems to have been particularly badly hit with many properties seeing 10,000 point rises.  It also appears that the vast majority of 10,000 point per night hotels in the US have been moved up to 20,000 points.

I thought I would also look at the ‘exchange rate’ when a hotel is offering redemption rooms for less than the daily cap.  Here are a few London examples for a random date in January 2020 when rates are low and the cap is often not triggered:

Conrad St James – 76,000 points or £235 – 0.31p

The Waldorf Hilton – 71,000 points or £244 – 0.34p

Hampton Waterloo – 46,000 points or £140 – 0.30p

DoubleTree West End – 59,000 points or £162 – 0.27p

DoubleTree Marble Arch – 53,000 points or £164 – 0.31p

Nothing seems to have changed here.  The ‘pence per point’ valuation remains in the range I would expect.  For clarity, the cash price shown is the cheapest non-refundable rate.  Rewards nights ARE cancellable / refundable.  On the other hand, cash nights earn points as well.

If there is something to learn from this it is that Hilton Honors does not feel that it has to give advance notice of changes to the points ‘cap’ on any particular hotel.  If you are considering a Hilton redemption and you have the points in your account, you should book it.

There is no downside – you can cancel at any point for an instant refund – and plenty of upside should the price sneak up.

Reading the FT online this morning and Head for Points in the article “Is Lufthansa an e-money issuer?”

Always good to see the site being mentioned!

    • Shoestring says:

Good spot – can be googled to get behind the paywall.

I want my Avios and Virgin miles to be freely convertible to cash at the same rate they let you buy them! Ker-ching! 🙂

I thought I posted a question about this AL deal recently but it never appeared on the site.

My email says £30 of weekend travel and it also says it expires at the end of August. This makes very little sense so I’m curious to hear if others got the same email or a similar one with the correct £5 offer for June only.

And if you spend under £10 do you still get back whatever you spent eg £8.50 or does it only work if you go over £10 charged to card? And does the £1.50 in this example rollover to the next time you use it (as long as it’s in that month). And is it per calendar month, per billing cycle or every 12th of the month. Many unanswered questions!

I thought I read here that if you are existing Plat cardholder, you need to opt in to receive Add Lee and onefinestay benefits. Is that still the case?

Totally OT but … I wanted to query Buenos Aires connoisseurs who have been in the city lately: Is it better to stay for a few days in Palermo SoHo or Recoleta? I am really split.. (Couple mid-30s) [Sightseeing is sorted as we have booked a guided tour for a day]

    • Lev441 says:

I personally preferred Palermo when I was there in October…

    • Mike says:

This February, I spent 10 days in BA with my wife as part of out honeymoon (also mid-30s). We had the same conundrum and ended up staying in an Airbnb in Palermo Hollywood, which is the other side of Ave. Juan B Justo. We stayed on Fitz Roy street and we loved the location.

Fitz Roy and the surrounding area of Palermo Hollywood was really cool, lots of trendy coffee shops and cool places to eat and drink. It’s busy but not too busy.

My view is that Palermo Soho was much more busy on a night, especially at the weekend. For me, I like to be close to the action but I don’t like to stay in the action. I think that staying in Palermo Soho would be fine if you’re the type of person that stays out every night until closing time. But it might be a bit noisy in the apartment if you’re not out till closing time.

Recoleta was a cool place to visit, but nowhere near as trendy/bohemian as Palermo Soho/Hollywood. The apartments in Recoleta seemed bigger and more expensive, but we didn’t think the area was as cool.

BA is really safe and Ubers are easy to get and cheap. Where ever you stay, you’ll love it… but Palermo Hollywood gets my vote!

I’ve just come back from BA on Sunday (well, Santiago, we flew into BA in CW and out of Santiago in F with a 241 🙂 )
The Curio Anselmo is actually a lovely option in San Telmo; great staff, nice breakfast, HH points etc. Rooms a little small but for 24k points per night (+5th night free) I wasn’t complaining.

San Telmo as a neighbourhood is vibrant with plenty to see and do – the market, tango in the square outside the hotel, and some good bars and restaurants.

O/T 1am tonight is T-355 reward seats release timing for getting home on Sunday 31st May 2020, if that is your intended return date for the May half term holiday next year. Back to school on June 1st for our kids.

Saw Hilton at Gatwick offered for 40k points for the first time, normally in the 23k-30k spread

    • Peter K says:

Wow. I booked it for 24k in Jan. It was nice but not worth 40k, even as diamond with lounge access.

      • Tilly71 says:

Was you in the New section?
We got upgraded for being Diamond, crummy outdated room and much prefer the Hampton now.
