Book good Qatar Airways business class flight deals from Scandinavia to Asia

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Qatar Airways is running another set of great offers from Sweden and Norway to Asia.  These are for flights ticketed before 2nd September.  You can travel at any point in the next year although I’d be surprised if there is much over Christmas and New Year.

Here are some sample prices from Stockholm:

Bangkok (16487 SEK, £1390)

Hong Kong (16430 SEK, £1385)

Manila (16567 SEK, £1397)

Phuket (17230 SEK, £1453)

The following destinations have good prices from Oslo (Stockholm is higher):

Singapore (16055 NOK, £1454)

Bali (17563 NOK, £1581)

Jakarta (14973 NOK, £1356)

If a particular Asian city is not listed above, it is worth looking at prices from both these departure points.

If you are trying to find these fares, you need to:

Book the outbound on a Sunday to Thursday

Book the inbound on a Monday to Friday

Remember that you earn Avios and British Airways tier points when you fly with Qatar Airways.  All of these trips earn you 560 tier points (four flights at 140 tier points each, with the change in Doha) which is virtually a British Airways Executive Club Silver card.

We have reviewed the Qatar Airways A380 business class seat here, the Boeing 787 business class here and the old-style Boeing 777 business class seat here.  The new Qsuite on most of the A350 fleet and some of the Boeing 777 fleet is covered here.

The Qatar Airways website has special pages covering the two main business class seats – the A380 / 787 / partial A350 version is here and Qsuite is explained here.

You can book on the Qatar Airways site here.

If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers triple points – 3 per £1 – when you book flight tickets in a foreign currency.  This is because the transaction triggers the ‘double points for airline spend’ and the ‘double points for foreign spend’ bonuses.

PS.  We recently wrote about some great Qatar Airways fares from Izmir in Turkey, with a caveat that this was clearly inconvenient for most people.  One reader dropped us a line to say that his parents live in Izmir and he was able to find flights to Bali in Business Class over Christmas for just over £1,000.  He was very happy – a family visit and an incredibly cheap Christmas break in one!

OT – for those that went for the SundayTimes Travel magazine some three years ago.. I have had just had a direct debit come out, despite previously cancelling it (and of course cancelling the subscription in year 1). I had problems with them last year as well, as did others, and they had massive IT issues, so might be worth checking accounts.

  • Nick_C says:

“If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets”

There have been comments on here recently that buying air tickets with PRGC in a foreign currency gets you triple points, the additional points for air tickets and foreign currency stacking up.

    • Rob says:

If anyone has a screen shot showing that please do email it across – rob at headforpoints.co.uk

      • Doug M says:

I can and will shortly do that for an AA purchase. My memory of the comments at the time was that it rather seemed to be airline specific as to whether you got 3MR or only 2.

        • Steve says:

Not got a screen shot but I got triple points when I had to purchase domestic ticket on Jal at Haneda Airport.

          • Roberto says:

I can confirm the triple MR deal buying BA flights in Euros on my UK Gold. Will ping you a screen shot if I can find one as the cards have tended to have been cycled.

          • Rob says:

Not necessary, I’ve had a couple from other readers. Seems to be a thing.

  • Joe Green says:

Do supplementary cards on business platinum or gold cost?

    • New Card says:

And is it really for every supplementary? Not just the first…?

      • Rob says:

I specifically asked Amex and they said yes. I don’t have a Business card so I cannot confirm the wording on the site though.

        • Freddy says:

Up to 99 free cards on the biz gold

          • Roberto says:

Its 3000 per sup. I have quite a few, none of which have ever been used.

        • James says:

Is this only applicable to supplementary card ordered during the signup process?

I already have a Plat Business but sign of any offer in relation to supplementaries when logging in. Can’t remember what the fee is but think it’s 25 or 50 quid and might cancel the bonus our.

More interestingly though – the referral and signup bonuses look to have been super charged

“You’ll receive 27,000 Membership Rewards® points for each approved friend.

You can earn up to 270,000 Membership Rewards® points by referring your friends.

They earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points if they spend £6,000 in their first three months of Cardmembership.”

  • Nick (not “The Original Nick” aka Arrogant Nick) says:

“If you don’t have a credit card with 0% foreign exchange fees, your best option for paying is American Express Preferred Rewards Gold which offers double points – 2 per £1 – when you book flight tickets“

Rob – I suggest a better option with American Express Preferred Rewards Gold is to book on American Express Travel website which charges in £GBP and for which you will harvest 3 reward points per mile spent.

    • Rob says:

Usually doesn’t work with QR as fares are often not available off their own site. If Amex is not weighting the FX then I agree this would make sense – although the issue is that Amex has to deal with any cancellations etc for you.

      • Aston100 says:

The summer 2020 date I just checked (ARN – BKK) was cheaper with Amex Travel (about £100pp cheaper), was in sterling and you get I believe 3 MR per £.
Shame I need to spend a few more £k on my BAPP to hit the 241 threshold as otherwise this would have been a no brainer for me.

    • Doug M says:

Also, if you’re doing something a bit complex the airlines are just better. I don’t do TP runs, but I am quite happy doing what many would consider silly routing to up the TP, and those itineraries are always best with an airline, ideally the one most of the flights are with. If you’re heading west AA typically a much more flexible website than BA for multi city options, albeit you lose some Avios.
I have found Amex Travel OK, but AA will make lots of schedule changes and it’s always easier to deal with that directly than through a travel agent.

    • Waddle says:

The Amex travel portal doesn’t always have the best fares. If the fare is no more than 3% more expensive than the regular fare direct from the website when FX converted then yes I would say booking via Amex with the Gold card is a good idea.

However booking direct with Gold can also make sense. If you count your spend towards the 10k MR point annual bonus after £15,k you are earning 1.67 MR per £ plus 1 extra for airline and 1 extra for foreign spend thus netting 3.67 MR per £ which effectively cancels the 2.99% FX fee.

      • BS says:

You also get S75 protection on the gold card when it is booked direct (assuming it is the credit card gold card). You wouldn’t get this through a travel agent like Amex travel.

        • Aston100 says:

Do Amex Travel have similarly high levels of customer service as the rest of Amex?
If so, I would imagine they wouldn’t muck you around very much unlike many smaller OTAs?

          • RedEyeDonkey says:

I booked a flight for my parents with AA out to the US quite a way out to take advantage of the (usually) good one world fares 6+ months out in business class via AMEX Travel and the usual dreaded AA schedule change came leaving them an awful long layover. A quick reply from them to the email from the AMEX travel office asking them to find a better option led to it all being sorted the next working day with a much more sensible connecting flight so I’d be confident in not having any major issues booking through them.

  • Spurs Debs says:

O/T .., if I book a Hilton reward room and I have to cancel it do I get points returned?

    • Rob says:

      Yes, instantly

    • Marc says:

In the vast majority of cases (probably around 99%) yes, but on days of very high demand you might not.

We were in Madrid on the night of the Champions League final, positioning in for MIA-MAD the next day thanks to the crazy Iberia promotion last year. Not being interested in football didn’t realise it was on until I saw the lack of hotel availability, or through the roof rates.

I was very pleased to snag Hilton Madrid Airport for 40,000 points as it was selling for EUR4,655 cash! The reward booking was non refundable though, but that didn’t matter!

      • Spurs Debs says:

This booking is for Tottenham game against Bayan Munich in CL. Think I’m going with paying for hotel which will be my second stay of the Hilton promotion which will trigger my bonus plus double points. Unless I change my mind of course!

        Thanks everyone for advice.

    • Dave says:

Keep an eye out that there have been reports of reward stays being non-refundable after a certain date recently.

    • John says:

Occasionally, you will have to wait 2 months and call Hilton 10 times before your points get returned.

  • BA-Flyer says:

I signed up for Monese and three weeks later I was still waiting for my application to finish processing. (Never had problems getting accounts with high street banks). Customer service was non-existent – each time I contacted them they just told me to keep waiting. I spoke to the company reps at the HFP summer party and they didn’t seem interested in my experience. Starling is far superior in my opinion.

  • LST says:

Hi. Just wanted to say thank you for the heads up on the Emirates Skybox redemptions. Managed t9 book 4 seats for the family to go to the game v Bournemouth for my son’s 7th birthday. We only really garner points from spending, Emirates economy flights and Marriott vacation stays so the 96k points leaving our various accounts was painful, but it gives us the chance to use them for something I doubt my wife would have ever let me spend money on (the closest equivalent Arsenal package is £600 per person, which is steep when two of the guests are 5 and 7!)
I guess we are atypical in that we don’t use points for flight upgrades, but the advice on this site (and the comments section) about other redemption offers and bonuses etc has been invaluable.
    Cheers!

  • Martin says:

We have over 300,000 HSBC rewards points but cannot see anything about the 25% bonus? How do we get this?
    M&m Jersey

    • LST says:

Hi. I just logged in and like you can’t see any bonus option, it only offers converting to Avios at 2:1. Is it a targeted thing? I don’t have a BA account.

      • LST says:

Forgot to add, I would probably ring the Premier line and ask, they are usually very helpful.

        • Jonathan says:

A recurring theme is the lack of advertising for this. Some people get e-mails and occasionally it appears as a banner advert in online banking. Either way, it has never been an offer you have to register for, just make the transfer & it will automatically be applied. HSBC are also good at resolving issues over the phone if they arise.

      • Sam Bessey says:

Update: I’ve just checked my BAEC account and the points posted yesterday with a 25% bonus included… Happy days 🙂

    • Sam Bessey says:

I didn’t see it either, but I did the conversion… I did the conversion and will wait to see what shows up on my Avios account. If you speak to HSBC please let us know what they say.

      • Genghis says:

At the start of the month, I logged in and saw the 25% bonus banner on online banking. Made the transfer and the 25% bonus posted with the rest of the point in 2WDs. When Aug points landed made another transfer with the same. Painless (for HSBC)
