Workaround found. How to trigger an online British Airways flight refund using Google Chrome

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Our main article today is about BA’s unwillingness to let you claim an online cash refund for an Avios flight.

We have now found a way of triggering a cash refund – as opposed to a voucher – without calling British Airways (and waiting hours in the queue …..)

This next chunk of text is for getting a refund of your taxes on Avios bookings which have not yet been cancelled by BA.

For a refund on a CASH or Avios BA flight booking which has been cancelled, scroll down this page and read the PS. at the bottom.

If you have a CASH BA flight booking which is NOT showing as cancelled, do NOT follow any of the advice on this page.  You are not yet able to get a cash refund.  You either need to accept the British Airways travel voucher offered or wait until your flight is cancelled and then follow the steps above.

To be clear:

Got an Avios booking which is not yet cancelled?  Read on

Got an Avios booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is cancelled?  Go to the PS at the bottom

Got a cash booking which is not yet cancelled?   Sorry, there is no way of getting a cash refund.  You need to accept the BA voucher or wait for your flight to be cancelled.

How can you stop British Airways forcing a flight voucher on you?

In summary ….. if you turn off JavaScript in Google Chrome then ba.com will take you to the full cancellation page.

Here’s proof it works:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

This is how to do it, using the Google Chrome broswer.

Go into ‘Manage My Booking’ on ba.com and select ‘Cancellation options for this booking’.  You must be logged in and using the BA account of the person who booked, ie the person who is named on the confirmation email.

You are taken to the ‘consent’ screen:

How to trigger an online Avios flight refund using Google Chrome

Do NOT continue the process, as you will only be taken to the ‘Future Travel Voucher’ page which you don’t want.  In order to cancel, you need to first disable JavaScript in Chrome.  (If you are not using Chrome, you need to find out how your browser handles JavaScript.)

This is how you do it:

Click the ‘three dots’ in the top right corner of Chrome

Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and click – this opens a new ‘Settings’ page

Click ‘Privacy & Security’ in the left menu – this brings the ‘Privacy & Security’ section to the top

Click ‘Site Settings’ in the ‘Privacy & Security’ section

Scroll down to the ‘Permissions’ section and click ‘JavaScript’

Turn off JavaScript by toggling the ‘Allowed’ button

Do NOT close the window as you need to turn it back on later.  Switch back to the window where you have the ba.com ‘Consent’ page open.  Tick the ‘Please tick here’ box and click ‘Continue’.

You will now be on the standard cash cancellation screen.

Turn JavaScript back on.

You can cancel your booking for a full cash refund of your taxes, and with your Avios returned.

But don’t forget …..

You will be still be paying the £35 per person cancellation fee on a long-haul booking.  If you want to avoid this, you need to wait until BA cancels your flight automatically, assuming it does not operate.

If you paid for seat selection, you LOSE this money if you cancel.  You may prefer to take the travel voucher as I believe the seat selection value is retained, either as part of the voucher or as a credit for free seat selection when you rebook.

PS.  How to get a refund for a CASH British Airways booking

If you are looking to refund a CASH booking which has already been cancelled, this is an alternative set of steps:

1) Go into Manage My Booking on ba.com and select the flight shown as cancelled

2) Go into your browser’s settings and disable JavaScript – for Chrome, follow the instructions I outlined earlier in this article for cancelling an Avios booking

3) Go back to ‘Manage My Booking’ and click on the ‘Cancel and Refund’ button which is just under the cancellation notice

4) Confirm that you now see the correct cash refund form and not the voucher refund form

5) Turn JavaScript back on in your browser settings

6) Click on the “Yes” radio button to select that you are a person in the booking

7) When nothing happens press “Enter” on your keyboard. (this works in Firefox and Chrome). The page refreshes and shows an error at the top of the page “email address invalid”

8) Click on the “Yes” radio button again

9) Complete and submit the form

You will see this screen:

British Airways cancellation

For absolute clarity, do NOT cancel a CASH flight if you have not received an email from British Airways saying that your flight is cancelled.  If your flight is still showing as operating, cancelling means you lose EVERYTHING except a nominal amount in taxes.

Works in Internet Explorer 11 also. £830 refund – must make sure you turn back on the javascript as described otherwise just hangs. Thank you so much, this is so valuable.

  • P11 says:

I have 1 booking which is return flights (Belfast – Jakarta) and it has 3 flight connections which is Belfast – London, London – Singapore and Singapore – Jakarta and the only flight that is cancelled is the Belfast – London one, the rest aren’t cancelled yet. Will this method work for my case too?

    • Lady London says:

      Should do
If not I wouldn’t let BA get away with it and would call them and insist on a refund of the booking which – provided there’s a cancelled flight on my booking or a significant change , I would be entitled to.

  • Bob J says:

    You are a beautiful person!

  • Shoestring says:

    • Ron Johnson says:

It worked. I used Safari and missed the very important point that you have to turn javascript back on after you get the regular cancellation page and BEFORE you click on the final stage of cancelling the ticket. I got at refund of my points and CAD 1201. Again. Thank you for your help.

    • Paula S says:

Thank you!! Those instructions were perfect and really easy to follow. Refund processing!

  • Hattie says:

Thank you so much for this!
I was fuming when I couldn’t see how to get the refund and was only directed to the travel voucher page. I used to be a loyal British Airways customer but their underhand tactics of promising a refund and then seemingly making it impossible for you to get one has really made me question their integrity. I understand that these are incredibly tough times for the aviation industry, but they are tough times for everyone and we should be working together to make things easier not employing sneaky ways to stop people getting their hard earned money back.
I am so grateful that you found and published this simple solution.

    • Lady London says:

BA is not ‘promising a refund’.

BA is legally obliged to provide you a cash refund if you request it if they do cancellations or flights on your booking or make significant changes.

They’re not doing it voluntarily. Mostly their ticket won’t allow a refund except government tax component. Which is a fraction of the punt they said was ‘taxes’ when you paid for the ticket.

You get the refund because the law is valid over any terms and conditions and EU and UK law gives you the refund if the above happens a cording to EC261

BA is acting totally illegally. However they can surely rely on the fact that most people who say they won’t ever book again with them due to Bas sneaky nasty behaviour, will still book with them next year.

  • Davis says:

    Hello

I am trying to make a flight this morning on the BA site (online) and cannot find the space to enter the voucher. Yesterday it was there no problem. Has it been removed or am I just sleepy ?

Yesterday it would not accept my voucher which begins 125 87 as the numbers 125 82 were pre-populated. I presume this will be sorted out in time. Has anyone else experienced this?

My voucher email did not state how much it was for. Has anyone found a way to check this ?

Oh and thanks for the Javascript guidance above !!

    Davis

    • Davis says:

I looked again and found the option to enter the eVoucher on the Select Flight page -so my dizziness to blame.

Still not possible to input a voucher with 125 87 prefix though…

      Davis

    • Lady London says:

So is BA is not allowing their system to accept vouchers which they seem to be deliberately forcing people to take? And BA won’t pay out on the vouchers? This is very worrying

  • Nige says:

Hi folks, Im trying to cancel a 2-4-1 heathrow to tokyo, with return narita to heathrow booking. i’ve tried the methods above but keep getting a message to contact BA for a refund, ‘cant process a refund on ba.com as booking includes a surface sector.’ Has anyone else managed to cancel a 2-4-1 with a different return journey? Also are additional avios used for seat selection on the booking also refunded? Thanks

    • Hlly says:

Yes, I have. 2 for 1 to Haneda, return from Narida. Did it 15 minute ago. They are “processing the refund”

      • Hlly says:

Should have added, I didn’t cancel the flights THEY DID. If your flight hasn’t been cancelled yet, hold your nerve – wait until BA cancels it. I used this method to request a refund, no way did I want to accept a poxy voucher. Thanks to Rob and all the other patient and clever folk on here. You know who you are 🙂

        • P11 says:

Also, do they say that your whole return flight is cancelled or is it only one of the flight (like only the departing flight or only the return flight)?

          • Lady London says:

If they change even 1 flight on your booking you have the right under EU261 to demand a refund of the whole booking. You do not have to accept a voucher

EU,261 does allow for this not to happen if the flight number stays the same and only changes by a small number of hours arriving and/or departing – but this is much less than the changed BA is currently making on people’s bookings

      • P11 says:

After you press the ‘request a refund’ button, did they show you how much money you should get from the refund or do they just straight up say that your refund is processed (without showing how much money you should be refunded)?

    • Lady London says:

Are you arriving and departing from different airports? Try the cut and paste links also provided by Bill and a couple of others on posts yesterday in case they work.

You can do this while you’re on the phone queuing to speak to British Airways which is what I would now advise if you really can’t make it work

  • Bill says:

I used this technique to cancel 3 avios reservations. 2 were instantly refunded. One informed me it would be done manually
