“How to get a discount on Gatwick Airport car parking” is a difficult and long-winded question.  This article has a particular focus on the ‘miles and points’ angles but there should be an option for everyone below.

Save money on official Gatwick Airport parking

The official Gatwick Airport car parks (click here) are certainly not the cheapest option but are convenient.

Official Gatwick Parking offers a 10% discount to anyone who signs up to the myGatwick offers site.  You can learn about how myGatwick works in this article.

Earn Avios from offsite airport parking

You will usually save money by parking at an unofficial car park near an airport, although the trade off is a longer transfer time to and from the terminal.

ParkVia is the British Airways Executive Club parking partner and you earn 5 Avios per £1 when you book with them. You do not need to be flying with British Airways.  The booking page for these offers is here.

(Interestingly, ParkVia has just been bought by Manchester Airports Group, which now feels confident enough post covid to be making acquisitions.)

Earn Virgin Points from offsite airport parking

Virgin Flying Club has partnerships with Holiday Extras and Purple Parking.  Full details are on the Virgin Atlantic site here.

All Flying Club members get a discount – even those on the free Red level – and you will earn 250 to 500 Virgin Points depending on what service you book. ‘Meet and Greet’ is available.

Use Tesco Clubcard vouchers for offsite airport parking

If you are stuck for a good way to use your Clubcard points now that Avios has left the scheme, Tesco Clubcard has a partnership with airport parking group APH.  You can see details of the deal here.

You receive 3x the face value of your Clubcard vouchers if you redeem them for APH parking. This drops to 2x from 14th June 2023.

Use Zipcar Flex and avoid parking altogether

If you are a member of the Zipcar car sharing club, you may be familiar with Zipcar Flex. This allows you to pick up a Zipcar as usual and take it on a one way journey, with no requirement to drop it back at its original location.

The only rule is that, obviously, the place where you drop the car has to be an approved Zipcar Flex location. You can find these at Heathrow and at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal.

This HfP article tells you more about how Zipcar Flex works at London Gatwick.

Earn hotel points with ‘hotel and parking’ packages

I wrote an article here on the semi-secret ‘park and fly’ rates offered by IHG One Rewards via a little-known corner of their website. You may find that you can book a hotel room for the night before plus solve your parking problem for less than the cost of an official car park.

The benefit of booking an ‘official’ IHG package rather than using a consolidator like Holiday Extras is that you will earn IHG points for your stay and your elite benefits should be provided if you have status.  The booking page is here.

Another option is Bloc Hotel, located inside (literally inside) the South Terminal. It offers Park, Sleep, Fly packages in partnership with Official London Gatwick Parking, using either the North or South short stay car parks. Guests also receive fast-track security vouchers.

Get an ‘under the carpet’ deal at one of the Gatwick hotels

Some of the hotels at Gatwick sell their parking spaces – with no obligation to book a room – via the JustPark website or the YourParkingSpace website.

For a three week stay or longer, a monthly subscription slot booked via YourParkingSpace is likely to be the cheapest option. You can cancel your subscription with 30 days notice.

…. or borrow the drive of someone nearby

If you want a really cheap deal, there are also private individuals on JustPark and YourParkingSpace who rent out their driveways.

Conclusion

There is no simple answer to the cheapest airport parking at Gatwick Airport or indeed elsewhere in the UK.

It is all about the trade off between the distance from the airport and the price you want to pay. If you would need a hotel the night before anyway, then a ‘hotel plus parking’ package is probably your best option – but remember that these packages, unless booked direct, are unlikely to earn hotel points or give you elite status benefits.

If you are price conscious, then don’t be distracted by the points on offer from various operators like Holiday Extras. Focus on the bottom line price.

If you are spending your employers money, of course, the official Gatwick car parks are the quickest and easiest choice as well as arguably the most secure.

Also, anyone with the Natwest Premier Rewards Black account, can book official meet & greet parking at most airports for the same price as standard official on site parking.

  • Will says:

Got any promo codes ? There’s usually some that get 20% off gatwick official parking. The valet parking service is excellent and most convenient.

  • MattB says:

I used a 20% promo code I found online for long stay south, booked back in October for this August but got 18 days for about £87 which I thought was a good price.

  • Travel Strong says:

Word of warning on the flexibility of Holiday Extras parking – whilst the more expensive options are badged as flexible (‘flextras’ branding in a green oval) – they are not fully refundable (you get a credit voucher, and then you can request to convert some, but not all, of the voucher back to cash. Unless you cancel in a very specific time window, you are ending up with some level of store credit).

  • KP says:

I only ever book the official car parks with self-park as I dont want to hand over my keys to some muppet who drives my car like he is in a F1 race to the car park. What are other people’s experiences when booking with purple parking and other private car parks where you have to hand over your keys?

    • sayling says:

I’ve been using Sky Park Secure for many, many years now for booking ‘off site’ Meet and Greet companies at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. They seem to work only with vetted and reputable companies.
Only once had a severe waiting problem with a company at Stansted.
Tell a lie – also had an issue once at Gatwick, but that seemed to be affecting an awful lot of customers of other off site services at the same time, so no idea what was happening there.

    • Peter K says:

I have found Copthorne parking for Gatwick to be good. You have over your keys but the cars are parked on site. My car battery died one time when there and they jump started it twice for me!
You ring them when you arrive back for a transfer and it’s usually been pretty quick to get to the airport.

    • Gordon says:

@KP I’ve used all the car park companies there is at LGW, LHR & STN over many years and I have settled with purple parking now.Not only because of their price point (Which is very competitive) but they also have a great review score now. They are park mark award winners and have 24 hour security, you drive your vehicle to the barriers, The vehicle is scanned with cameras then upon entering you drive into one of several long bays and pop into the office hand the keys over then board one of the several busses to transfer to the terminals, About 10 mins to LGW north and 15 mins to LGW south, i have never waited longer than 20 mins for a pick up at the terminal on the return leg, I am currently in the Caribbean and my vehicle is parked at purple parking LGW Charlwood Rd, If your flying from LGW south as you taxi to the end of the runway you can see the car park at the end before you take off.
Purple parking at LHR on Bath road is just as good and has a similar price point and transfer times. It also has a premier inn next door, A 2 min walk with fantastic views of the runway from most rooms.

      • PJJ says:

Also used Purple Parking and Premier Inn next door.
Ideal if you have an early morning flight as they allow you to leave the vehicle the night before and use their shuttle bus the next morning. Probably a 3 minute walk between the 2

        • KP says:

Thanks all for comments. Google reviews is horrible for purple parking so I was not considered them despite the good prices. Surprised by your positive experiences

  • Tony says:

Lots of buses in Crawley to LGW…catch a bus from the free parking streets. At least you know where you car is, and you have the keys…and it’s free! The numbers 3/4/5 are useful….!!

    • Thegasman says:

Until an annoyed local spots you unloading your car & keys it while you’re away….

  • David S says:

I use the Valet parking at LGW provided that the rate is good. It usually is for stays of 2/3 weeks. They scan your car thoroughly for all marks on arrival by machine so you do hand over your keys to them. My trick is to simply book whichever terminal has the cheapest rate irrespective of which one I’m flying from. Sometimes there is a huge difference and the connecting train takes 2 mins

  • StanTheMan says:

Silly question – Can i just book the hotel/parking package, check in but not stay at the hotel, and head to the terminal?? – it is cheaper than booking parking direct at a LGW car park.

    • Rob says:

Probably not, no. They need your registration details for a start so you’re not clamped. You can check in and walk straight out though.

      • StanTheMan says:

Cool. Thats what i;ll do, check in, give them the Reg details, maybe ruffle the bed, then head to the terminal.
