You may not have heard of Graduate Hotels. It is a boutique US chain which specialises in high end hotels in ‘University towns’ – which is basically marketing speak for attractive second tier cities with a high proportion of well educated professionals.

It has been expanding to the UK and now has two hotels.

  • Graduate Cambridge is the fully renovated ex-DoubleTree hotel, which has a lovely position on the banks of the River Cam (a typical July Saturday night costs £300) – photo below
  • Graduate Oxford is the rebanded and renovated The Randolph Hotel, which was previously part of Macdonald Hotels (a typical July Saturday night costs £400)

Book every hotel for £30 or $30

Graduate Hotels is running a heavily discounted Summer sale today. At noon US Eastern (5pm UK – but it seems to have gone live early at 4pm), you can book its US hotels for $30 and the Oxford and Cambridge hotels for £30.

Here’s the small print:

  • use promo code SUMMER30
  • book for a stay by 31st July

It isn’t clear how the £30 / $30 rooms are allocated. I would guess that 1-2 per night per hotel will be made available.

The US hotels, if you are planning a trip in June or July, are located in:

  • Berkeley
  • Bloomington
  • Chapel Hill
  • East Lansing
  • Evanston
  • Iowa City
  • Knoxville
  • New Haven
  • Oxford (Mississippi)
  • Seattle
  • State College, Pennsylvania
  • Tempe

You can find more details about the offer on the Graduate Hotels website here.

  • James Vickers says:

Reviews aren’t amazing i notice.. maybe because of the price tag people are usually paying by the sounds of it

  • Dominic Barrington says:

Bit of a sad transition for the Randolph. Morse will be turning in his grave – as will his creator!

  • MKB says:

I was just able to make a booking in Oxford an hour ahead of when this sale is supposed to start. Price however was £36, not £30, so I’m guessing they were not including VAT in their marketing, which probably breaks a few ad regulations. Only the base category room was made available (in either double or accessible flavours).

    • bsuije says:

Seems to work for Oxford but not Cambridge (yet?).

      • MKB says:

While I have a confirmation number on the confirmation screen, no email has arrived. Wonder if they’ll try to cancel the booking, or if their systems are just very slow.

    • PL says:

I have booked oxford too for the same price although no email confirmation yet. A great deal this one

  • Corey says:

Thanks for the heads up – secured four nights in Providence for June which I’ll be looking forward to. Looks to be up an hour early though as an FYI to anyone else interested

  • Ashraj says:

Bit of a waste that if Cambridge is already sold out one hour before !

    • Rob says:

Cambridge is sold out. Oxford has a few dates left – lots more choice for single travellers as some dates only have single rooms remaining for the offer. We’ve booked Rhys in for Monday to try it out!

      • Matt says:

The Randolph is very dog friendly if you have a dog Rhys bring him along!

  • vol says:

hi – where do I pop the promo code? Doesn’t seem to be a box for it, or did I miss this?

    • Nick Burch says:

I couldn’t see it on the home page, but when on the results page you can hit Edit and then it shows

    • vol says:

OK, so I solved this problem – only after payment, I received a booking reference, but I haven’t received a confirmation email, which is rather troubling. And now it’s saying ‘reservation not found’ when I go to search….

      • Nectar collector says:

Same initially for me, but reservation found ok when I tried again

      • Corey says:

Same for me, ‘reservation not found’ when I try it… Hopefully just a slow system or something…

  • Nick Burch says:

Seems they went live at 4pm not 5!

I was looking at Oxford, and the dates were vanishing as I searched… Snagged a Monday in July in the end for £36, will be fun to see what it’s like even if it’s basically next door

  • ervo says:

all booked up by the looks of things now

    • Rob says:

Nonsense – Oxford there for 29/30/31 May, 1 June, 19 June, 27 June, 4 July, 5 July, 24-29 July, 31 July. Some of these dates only have single bedded rooms.

      • sammyj says:

That would do, if it was even possible to get on to the site

      • The real Swiss Tony says:

Yes according to the calendar, but when you click through on those dates it comes back saying the offer is sold out. I tried both for a single and double room.

        • Rob says:

Odd. Had no problem booking for Rhys on 30th. Perhaps it is not updating in real time.

          • ginlover says:

Just a note of thanks from me, my wife and our baby who are currently enjoying our stay in Oxford which we booked only because I read the article late on Wednesday! Thought we saw Rhys dining this evening so popped across with the intention of offering him and guest a drink as a way of thanks for all the work HFP do, only for it not to be him! That or it was him and he wanted to remain incognito! Cue awkward retreat back to the (£36) room! There’s a drink if you want it!

          • Rob says:

It was him! He wouldn’t deliberately avoid you – he spontaneously took a group of readers out to lunch when he was in Belfast for a few hours recently.

          • Rhys says:

More like they took me out to lunch!

          • Rhys says:

I wasn’t in the hotel restaurant today…but I’ll be in at breakfast if you want to say hi at 9am 🙂

          • ginlover says:

haha the guy did look surprised when I went up to him! I actually spotted the ‘real’ Rhys this morning whilst I was on a work call but didn’t get a chance to say hi! That drink will have to wait!
