Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How to use small orphan amounts of frequent flyer miles and hotel points – Part 1

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I thought it was about time to revise and update the lists I first published in 2012 about the best way to use up small amounts of miles and points.

What I want to explore is ‘What is the smallest or most optimum small reward, and how can you ‘top-off’ an account?’.  Please join in the discussion with your ideas in the Comments section, and I will add in any additional ideas.

Today I will look at hotel loyalty schemes.  Part 2 – click here – looks at some airline and shopping schemes.  Click on the links to read relevant Head for Points articles on the topic mentioned.

In all cases below except Accor, there is a formal ‘buy points’ option you can use to get to the level you need for a redemption.  This page (click) has links to the ‘buy points’ pages of the major airline and hotel schemes.  However, I try to find more creative ideas that don’t involve spending money.

My preferred small Hyatt reward is the 6,000 points per night suite upgrade.  You can also upgrade to Club rooms using points for a small premium.

Hyatt has ‘cash and points’ awards at half of the usual points price so you may have enough for a reward after all.  You can also buy Hyatt points.  Airline transfers are from 5,000 points.

You can use 1,000 points for a $10 dining or spa credit at a Hyatt hotel – you do not need to be a guest to do this.  This is surprisingly good value at the higher levels, eg $1,000 of credit for 65,000 Hyatt points. Another option is to use 6,000 points for a one-day Avis car hire redemption.

You can use points for the new FIND ‘experiences’ redemptions although the UK selection is weak.

Accounts can be topped up by crediting an Avis car rental to Hyatt.

You can merge your Hyatt points with those of your partner but both accounts need to have had a cash stay in the previous 12 months.

Hyatt is not an American Express Membership Rewards partner.

The World of Hyatt expiry rules are summarised here.

In Part 2 of this article, click here, I look at how to use small amounts of points in some airline and shopping programmes.

Any ideas on what to do with a small amount of Hertz (Gold Plus Rewards) points? Just received an AwardWallet notification.

    • Rob says:

Didn’t they scrap all transfers to airline and hotel schemes? Could be wrong.

  • Mark says:

Being able to combine points from accounts online for free has been a real boost recently. We do a handful of stays at cheaper Hilton/Marriott properties through the year so being able to consolidate points has been great.

“Note that there is no current IHG One Rewards UK credit card which is open to new applications”

Weren’t both cards closed to all?

Eagerly waiting for some thoughts/guidance on my Emirates points which expire tommorow

  • JohnTh says:

IHG top up – possible by the IHG extras restaurant booking (as per your recent article)
Marriott top up – possible if you register a Credit card and use that to pay for any F&B even if not staying in that hotel.

Added IHG, ta. Leaving the Marriott one out until we’ve done a proper article on it, which will be when its fully out of beta.

Trying to move 84k Radisson Rewards to BA. when I input my BAEC number I receive an error ‘formatting error’.

Anyone else experienced this and know a way around it?

    • Rob says:

This has been wobbly for some time ….

      • Scott Paterson says:

Thanks Rob. Is it intermittent, and just a case of keep trying?

I’ve never got my wife’s to go across.

I am having exactly the same problem. Very frustrating.

          • MLittle says:

I had the same issue but I then logged into the Radisson app, went to the section “rewards earning preferences” and I added my BAEC details and selected to always receive avios and saved the preference. I then went back to the page from the link on this article and the transfer then worked perfectly.

        • QFFlyer says:

I was never able to move them – not sure if it’s still possible, but moving them to Radisson Americas (which is now gone) then to Choice (which replaced RA) was timed perfectly with a decent transfer bonus to QF/VA – transferred them to VA and they appeared instantly. Was excellent value for what I’d otherwise have used them for (a night at a pretty mediocre, at best, hotel).

  • L Allen says:

My mild gripe about small points balances is that they are rarely at a nice round number and you can’t buy / transfer a “non-tidy” number of points.

  • RuthGrint says:

Any way of getting any value for Best Western points? 10, 880 points but we never feel inclined to stay at any Best Westerns in the UK! Thanks.
