Iberia Plus Kids …. another way of earning Avios points when your children fly

What is Iberia Plus Kids, and does it have any useful benefits?
The main way to earn Avios points on behalf of your children is to sign them up to a British Airways Executive Club household account.
Household accounts have got more flexible in recent years – removing the need for all members to share the same address for example – but some people may still want full flexibility.
There is another option which I wanted to mention. It is not ideal for most people, as I will explain.
Iberia runs a special loyalty scheme for children called Iberia Plus Kids.
You can find full details on the Iberia website here.
It has a rather funky membership card which I can imagine many adults would prefer to the usual Iberia one.
Who can join Iberia Plus Kids?
Iberia Plus Kids is open to children aged 2 to 11 at which point they graduate to ‘standard’ Iberia Plus membership. Iberia Plus Kids members receive the snazzy card above and are able to earn Avios and status points when they fly.
Is your child aged between 12 and 18? This is not a problem. There is a form on the Iberia Plus Kids page which can be completed by a parent or guardian and which allows your child to have a standalone Iberia Plus account.
This is a potential alternative for people who are not willing to open a British Airways Household Account purely to earn Avios points for their children.
You can’t send the Avios to British Airways until your child reaches 18
However, there is a snag. It doesn’t seem possible to get the Avios points OUT of Iberia Plus into a standard British Airways account, because you need to be 18 years old to have a BA account.
This means that, as I read it, Avios points earned in an Iberia Plus Kids account cannot be moved until the child hits 18.
This is not necessarily an issue. If your child earns enough points for a redemption in Iberia Plus Kids, you can simply redeem the points directly from there. You may also be happy for the Avios to sit in Iberia Plus Kids for a few years until the child hits 18.
For most people, though, adding their child to a British Airways Executive Club Household Account will continue to be the best way of ensuring that they can earn Avios.
