@VinZ why would you seriously expect a ‘retention’ offer after less than five months holding a card for which you have not even paid a fee yet?

Honestly… lol! good riddance from Amex’s perspective, likely a loss making customer for them!!

I have multiple cards with them, held between two people, all my spend goes on Amex cards, I’ve held my BAPP for 11 years. Not sure I would describe myself a loss-making client… I only tried because a few other members of this forum have posted about retention offers being offered midway their first year, so…
I’ll try again in a couple of months, lots of foreign spend in the last month or so but I’m going to work towards my 70k SUB on husband’s BAPP first.

I haven’t gone through all the comments in this thread, but I would be surprised if anyone got an offer in their first year with the Gold (before the annual fee). But, I think there have been examples of people getting pretty good offers on the Platinum in their first year, but they’ve paid over £500 for the card.

Not exactly. I bring lots of money to the brand, v loyal customer. I’d be cautious to quickly judge somebody you don’t know when in fact we’re all here to find ways of exploiting the system.
I’ve has the gold card for 6-7months now I’ve just got the BAPP card as that’s more suited to me
I contacted Amex to cancel the gold card didn’t ask for anything but was offered 10k points to keep thought it was strange as never paid interest however have used card abroad alot so had lots of charges
I accepted however will keep the card until the fee is charge then cancel
Is this ok as don’t want to cause any issues with the BAPP account
I’ve been given retention offers on two PRG cards within the first 12 months of receiving the cards (i.e. within the fee free period).

Sorry, accidentally reported your comment.
You can cancel that PRG whenever you like (including a few days later if you have the balls and low morality for it) and it shouldn’t affect your BAPP application.
Not encouraging this behaviour, but just answering your question factually.
How to you guys go about getting the retention offer? I just went on chat and asked to cancel my gold card, explained its due to putting spend elsewhere and not being able to refer and they said “sure we can cancel that for you now”.
Ive had the Gold card for about 3 years using it for daily spend so not looking for churning etc.
Advice appreciated.

Have you tried calling the number on the back of your card and being put through to Brighton, or asking the agent to put you through to Brighton if you aren’t put through automatically?
business gold: I just got £125 statement credit, posted immediately after trying to leave 6 months into my 2nd year (had only kept it as offers had offsetthe fee). I cited the membership fee as the reason. It wasn’t until the very last Second that he offered it. He’d even gone through all of the closure script!
Data point: just offered 20k retention bonus via online chat which I gratefully accepted. For context it’s a week after annual fee was taken, and I’ve held the card for about a decade with roughly £20k/yr spend. Pleased with the outcome which was better than I expected.
I have had gold for 6 years now, I spent 30k this year on my gold and got the £160 fee this week.
I called up to say I wanted to cancel and they said but you clearly use the Deliveroo benefit do you still wish to cancel to which I said yes, then he said ok no problem that’s the card cancelled.
I now need to move 200k Membership rewards points in 30 days, maybe I jumped the gun but that’s the chance you take I guess – too late now.
Just apply for the free rewards card. When it arrives activate it from within your current Amex account and Bingo, your MR points are safe for a rainy day in the distant future.

I’ve never had my MR accounts linked automatically by AMEX, so if you get the card I’d certainly make a call to them (ask for a UK-based rep – more access to the systems and more likely to do it correctly) and ask them to link the accounts!
Uh?! I’ve always activated my new cards to the same account and then they sit happily together sharing the same MR points. The key is to activate the new card in the account already set up from the menu. Choose ‘Activate New Card’. It really isn’t rocket science.
IT gremlins don’t align with your theory so i guess it is rocket science … as I only have 1 account and I’ve had a new MR account created b4
10,000 offered through chat by the retention team today. Held the card since October 2021 with ~ £25K spent. Churning the BAPP now, so I was hoping for 20,000 to top up my Avios balance since I’ll be closing the card to restart the welcome bonus counter anyway. Oh well.
I received 10K poinst via chat after asking for my options because I didn’t see the value with the annual fee approaching soon. Now I am wondering… will they bump up the Platinum upgrade offer from 20K? I am thinking of upgrading shortly after the fee posts in my PRG card.
This is for Business Gold however I asked to speak to retentions and said my friend Dave (made up) got offered 6 months of double points.
They went through usual security and said they could offer me £80 worth of statement credit. I rejected it and said can’t you match Dave offers and they said let us check and then offered double points for 6 months.
All through the website live chat. To be fair I did the same last year once I saw someone else on this forum being offered double but this time I waited until it was a year since initially getting the deal to ask again.
As a fairly heavy user this is a highly positive outcome.
Also got offered the 20k MR points. PRG member here, only had the card for a year. But I also hold an Amex Business gold card, as well as a supp blue card (from my wife).
In terms of spend, I had put only about £10k through over the year, not much overseas spending.
Did maximize the rewards like Deliveroo credit, and also various Amex cashback offers. With 20k points as well as continuing Deliveroo credits, cashback offers, lounge passes, and the double points earning on flights, I think I’m happy to pay £160 for another year.
I got 10k points yesterday. Think I’d been given 20k Feb 2022
Personal Gold expires tomorrow after 1sy year.
Offered instant 20,000 points.
I’m due to spend £5k on Friday which will give 5,000 points PLUS the 2,500 bonus.
So 27,500 points and I can cancel pro-rata in month 1.
Unless I’ve missed something lol

I’d like to see JDB’s reaction to this.
Card is due to renew on the 7th after 1st year.
Live chat offered 7000 points or a downgrade, accepted the 7000.
