Five UK Marriott hotels, mainly country clubs, are to leave the chain

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Five UK Marriott hotels are leaving the chain in two weeks, despite being included on the new points pricing list from August.

These are:

  • Sunderland Marriott
  • Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park
  • Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Shipley
  • Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Southampton
  • Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Norwich

The last day that these hotels will operate under the Marriott brand is 18th July.

These hotels were recently for sale – I don’t know if a deal was concluded.  The removal of the Marriott branding is being described as a positive to give the buyer a clean sheet.

  • Matt says:

HI all l just found out you can’t transfer your Avios points to BAEC account from Iberia Plus until you had the Iberia Plus account up and running for a minimum of 6 months.

Avios customer service just told me ????????

    • Polly says:

It’s why Rob repeatedly advises on here that all of us have an active IB account up and running, ASAP. Many of their rules are restrictive so having the account opens helps speed things up.

      • Rob says:

It is 90 days, not 6 months, unless it has changed.

      • Matt says:

Some Avios have told a to have the Iberia Plus account for 3 months and get one Avios point on their website.

        I dislike conflicting information.

Maybe Rob knows the correct Information?

I had an Iberia Plus account since the beginning of April this year????????

    • Anna says:

Avios CS don’t even know all the rules of their own scheme, let alone BAEC and Iberia!

  • Nick G says:

Mine all arrived now …. Daft question can I book Qatar via Iberia plus or only BA/Iberia/vueling etc

    • Rob says:

Can do BUT non-refundable, non-changeable and must be a return flight.

  • Jimbob says:

Still waiting for my 270k points to post (me, wife and dog)

    • Rob says:

The dog isn’t getting them – unless it already had an IB account before this promo launched.

      • Jimbob says:

Nothing in the T&Cs regarding exclusions for dogs, and I’ve uploaded his passport to confirm id

        • JS says:

Hah! I’d love to know the outcome of this!

        • Jimbob says:

On a serious note, I’m only expecting 54k Avios from this, not a lot for flight or hotel redemptions. Is it possible to splurge them on a case or two of wine?

  • Ian Palmer says:

Checking the small print in the email they just sent me they can’t be transferred out….

1-These Avios cannot be transferred or combined with Avios from other programmes or accounts, and they will expire on December 1st 2018 if not used by that date. All Avios from this promotion not redeemed by then will be withdrawn from the customer’s account on December 1st 2018.
2-These Avios may be used via the Iberia Plus Programme from the moment they are awarded up until December 1st 2018.
3-Any purchases charged to Avios from this promotion (redemptions) may be exchanged and reissued, if applicable, up until December 1st 2018, as per the particular terms and conditions of the products purchased. Keep in mind that cancellation or refund requests made by the customer for tickets purchased during the promotion implies withdrawal or cancellation of the promotional Avios, regardless of the refund date.
4-The 9,000 extra Avios from this promotion have been awarded to all customers who used a valid Iberia Plus number when purchasing tickets that meet the campaign terms and conditions via Iberia systems.

    • the real harry1 says:

They never included the bit about not transferring out/ combining with Avios on other programs in the original T&Cs

      • the real harry1 says:

I got the original cached T&Cs from google, which were simply

        Terms and conditions
Special offer of an extra 9,000 Avios for each ticket purchased between 21 and 24 June 2018 (maximum of 90,000 promotional Avios per member) on iberia.com for a flight operated by Iberia, Iberia Express or Air Nostrum. The Avios will be added within 10 days of the purchase to the Iberia Plus account of all customers identified as members of the Iberia Plus programme during the purchase process.

If the customer requests a refund, either because it is permitted by the fare or for any other reason, the promotional Avios will be withdrawn from their account. The extra promotional Avios not redeemed by 1 December 2018 will be withdrawn from the customer’s account. The redemption terms and conditions are subject to the general terms and conditions of the Iberia Plus programme.

For example, if a customer purchases tickets on Iberia.com for three people to fly from Seville to Madrid and two of the people are identified as Iberia Plus members during the purchase process, 9,000 Avios will be credited to both of these people within 10 days of the purchase. These two people must have redeemed at least 9,000 Avios by 1 December 2018, or this same amount of Avios will be withdrawn from their account.

        • the real harry1 says:

It’s quite unscrupulous, duplicitous changing of the original T&Cs AFTER the event.

Raffles was even given email assurance by IB that points COULD be transferred out & that this would leave a -90K balance in the IB a/c.

You might have wanted the points for a 2-4-1 redemption and thought to hell with the -90K (or whatever), this means I can get my 2-4-1. I’ll repay the ‘loan’ later.

Entirely unprofessional and under UK law, illegal.

Under Spanish law, probably, …ok let’s not go there, mañana 🙂

        • Matt says:

Surely if they have changed the T&C,s stopping transferring of Avios to another program or BAEC after the promotion is finished they are breaking the law?

          What do you think Rob?

There was no mention of this transfer restriction in the original promotion.

If this is true I have lost £125 as l wont be traveling till early 2019 ????????????

        • the real harry1 says:

Promotions offered in multiple countries need to keep to the law of the country in which they are offered. Spanish law is irrelevant here.

That’s presumably the reason HFP promotions are often UK only, though I guess the partner often decides that.

So yes: IB has broken UK law – you simply can’t change published promotional T&Cs after the event, or add in restrictive conditions that were not there originally.

      • JS says:

Yes, it does change the promotion slightly – I was banking on being able to transfer my avios

        • the real harry1 says:

you should have been around earlier – I got out 40K before I had to go to a meeting, wish I’d cancelled! Others got out the full 90K

      • Graham Walsh says:

Indeed. Got the email just now too. Have they moved the goalpost then? How is that allowed and they were not being honest with us on the promotion.

    • Lady London says:

I don’t think condition 3. is valid either unless announced as part of the promotion (and it wasn’t). We were entitled to assume all avios earned from the promotion would have the general rules applying to them unless any were specifically mentioned in the promotion details. The only special thing was that they had to be used by December 1st. Nothing about not being able to change or cancel bookings from that date.

I think they are on a sticky one legally here, and it looks like the first example of Iberia trying to change the rules after the fact, and not playing fair. Does anyone that knows about these things agree with me here?

      • FlyingChris says:

Yes that is particularly annoying. I want to use them for hotels in August 2019 and happy to make the booking before 1st December, but to not be able to modify or change the booking is a little frustrating. Still lots of time to sit back and watch how this plays out.

        • Lady London says:

I suspect if anyone receives an email like the ones above, with new conditions or more restrictions that were not mentioned clearly when they booked tickets under the promotion, then it might be very important for them to respond immediately to Iberia rejecting those conditions. Otherwise you could be deemed to have accepted worse condtiions that they are now trying to impose.

I haven’t received any such email, I booked fairly under the promotion having checked all the conditions carefully, and should I receive any email with more restrictive conditions that I was not advised of, I will formally respond to Iberia immediately restricting those conditions.

        • Lady London says:

*I will formally respond to Iberia immeditely rejecting those conditions. Cos if I don’t then I am worried I could be deemed to have accepted worse conditions than I as a longstanding Iberia member familiar with their rules governing Avios usage, actually booked under since nothing different to the usual was drawn to my attention other than having to use them by December 1st. I’ve used lots of Avios in my time to book things and never had a restriction that I couldn’t change the relevant bookings, at least. And I don’t intend to start accepting such conditions now and certainly did not see any notified with the promotion.

  • BlueThroughCrimp says:

    Email Arrived from Iberia.

    You have now the
    45,000
Avios earned in last June’s promotion

Remember that these extra Avios will be available to spend up to 1st December 2018.

Find out how far your Avios can take you by visiting http://www.iberia.com/gb/iberiaplus/use-avios

The extra Avios collected through this promotion will be recorded in your standard balance and be subjected to special expiration date and terms and conditions, additional to those of the standard Iberia Plus Programme, except for the following:

  • Anna says:

Anyway, what’s going on with Dubai? Here up north it’s an incredibly popular holiday destination, especially at Xmas, I know people who go at least once a year and sometimes more.

    • the real harry1 says:

Not my sort of destination, enough said (and I’ve been there before anybody jumps in!) 🙂

Plenty of people here would go, they probably also like some the places I do like, so horses for courses

  • Dan says:

Credit to them for not backing out of it – seems that no one in marketing realised quite the zeal of all of us points hounds.

I finally got hold of someone at the call centre, only to find they have had an IT meltdown. Luckily I never factor in the cost of time for my ‘hobby’ or those points would be costing more and more.

  • JS says:

Found the cancellation fees/policy for Iberia hotels on my booking. This is ON TOP of the restrictions of the particular hotel: (TLDR: £25)

    Changes are not permitted
You can cancel your current booking, for a fee, and make a new booking. However, we cannot guarantee that the same hotel room or car rental option will still be available.
Cancellations made outside of 72 hours to travel will be charged a cancellation fee of 25€ / £25 or local equivalent, plus any applicable Supplier Fees as advised at time of booking. Cancellation/Supplier fees are payable in CASH by credit/debit card only.
Cancellations made within 72 hours to travel will be charged 100% of the booking value.

    • FlyingChris says:

Good to know. In short, not free like most hotel points bookings, but more in line with cancelling a BA redemption – assuming you don’t book a non-cancelable rate. Still frustrating can’t modify a hotel booking after Dec 1st though without risk of losing them all.
