Crowne Plaza Manchester Oxford Road lounge review

PointBreaks has changed …..

Historically all PointBreaks rooms cost a flat 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night.

This was a great deal, except for the teeny tiny fact that the selection of hotels had been getting progressively worse for the last couple of years. If you were looking for a good deal in a major tourist centre then you were going to be disappointed – although it was handy if you wanted a weekend break in Doncaster.  This changed last year.

The 95 hotels on the list below are priced at between 5,000 and 15,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night. In general the quality of hotels included has gone up since the 5,000 point cap was removed, although at the end of the day it always depends on how the list fits around your travel plans.

What are the PointBreaks highlights?

Not surprisingly the better deals are at the 15,000 points level.  What is surprising this time is the large number of UK hotels – and some of them are pretty good.

Crowne Plaza London – Albert Embankment is a recent opening which we haven’t visited yet.  The location is a bit odd – it advertises itself as 10 minutes to Vauxhall underground station, which is not exactly a selling point – but for 15,000 points per night across the Summer you won’t go wrong.

The two Manchester hotels are new. I visited the Hotel Indigo before it opened (click here) and it looked great.  I reviewed the Staybridge Suites here.  15,000 points is a good deal here.

At 10,000 points per night, you can’t argue about Holiday Inn Express London – Newbury Park (on the Central Line), Holiday Inn Express London – Wimbledon South (directly opposite Colliers Wood tube) or, near Heathrow, Holiday Inn London – Heathrow M4, Jct.4.

We don’t have any experience of any of the European hotels except for Crowne Plaza Lille which is next to the Eurostar station and which Rob says was impressive when it opened (this is a few years ago).  Crowne Plaza Porto could be interesting for a weekend break and offers real value at 10,000 points.

How to book a PointBreaks room

PointBreaks availability is limited so book ASAP if you are interested.

You can book via the IHG PointBreaks page here or via the standard booking page here.

You are able to book these hotels for dates up to 31st August.

If you are trying to book a reward night for a date up to 31st August and it is pricing at the full rate, the hotel has sold its allocation of PointBreaks nights.

You allowed a maximum of two bookings per individual hotel. Each booking can be for as many nights as you want. Remember that if you attempt to amend your booking later by dropping a night or two the whole booking may reprice at the full rate.

The newly taken over Met in Leeds is probably worth a poke too, nice looking building.

    • Rooster says:

Save your points it’s in a very poor condition, for example none of the windows would close or block noise from outside because they are so old and not maintained.

      • Rob Walker says:

Yes, I work around the corner and so stayed a couple of nights for the free night promotion when it joined IHG. The rooms are often a good size, but can be a bit dated. That said, it was perfectly fine the two night I stayed with no real issues. The bathroom in one room was quite comically austere though, with separate hot and cold taps etc.

Unless you have a car to park.

  • Andrew says:

If you’ve got a long layover on a QR flight, then HI Doha Business park at 5000 points is excellent. It a new hotel with the usually high standard rooms in the Middle East and less than a 15 minute taxi ride from HIA.

You can also take the 747 bus there, it’s like a private coach as nobody else takes it. Runs every 20 mins, 10 riyals return ticket which comes as a smartcard. Buy at the transport desk in baggage reclaim, card payment accepted, don’t pay the driver as he will just pocket the money and not give you a ticket!

    How is the Birmingham CP?

I mean I don’t really care as long as it’s a decent place to sleep, arriving by train at 11pm so location is important, I had already booked the HIX (same buliding or next door??) for 20K points so just switched to this as the HIX breakfast is not worth 5000 points! Wouldn’t be there at lounge evening times even if they did grant it.

    • Grant says:

Ideal for the train if you’re arriving in to Birmingham New Street – less than 10 mins walk for someone who doesn’t know where they are going and quicker to walk than ride in a cab thanks to all the work going on in that part of the city centre. It’s a typical business style hotel. Was updated a few years ago so still relatively new in most places. A bit soulless, but fine for an overnight.

OT – not IHG but on hotels – does anyone know if Marriott have sales in the US? I’ve not seen one for many months despite various Accor, IHG and Hilton sales coming and going…

    Thanks

  • @mkcol says:

    Well this is fortuitous.
I needed a night in Basingstoke to make the Bombay Sapphire distillery tour do-able while being able to enjoy it to the full. I know, the HI doesn’t look at all special.
I’ve already got a night at LHR Staybridge Suites booked but I think I’ll flip that to the HI & pocket 15,000 points.
And finally I need a room for hubby in Birmingham while I’m off at the QE hospital donating my left kidney so it’ll make visiting times easier for him rather than commuting up & down from MK twice daily.
I’m very very pleased with all this 😀

    • Lady London says:

OT mkcol can you tell us more about the left kidney? Is this why you’re doing the Bombay Sapphire tour as a last thing, first?

      • @mkcol says:

@LadyLondon Left kidney as surgeon could see it was easier to remove/has better tubes for re-connection to the recipient. I’m what’s called an altruistic donor (still makes me laugh) in the paired/pooled scheme – I’ll kick off a chain of up to 4 donations.
As for gin – actually no, that’ll be after it’s removed!
Happy to speak directly if you have any Qs, Rob can pass on my email.

Two nights booked in Edinburgh for my Wife’s grandmother’s 100th birthday in July. We were going to use my free night for one of the more expensive hotels, but couldn’t then decide what to do for the second night.

  • Simon D says:

Well. This has worked out nicely for me. Was going to be in the Indigo Manchester in Mid June anyway, so have re-booked at 15k per night and needed to be in Brum on a Tuesday so have bagged the CP. Not bad at all!

Can you convert Amex MR points to IHG?
