Do you get HSBC reward points for paying college fees?

    1,621 posts

I’ve never paid college fees, but I’m yet to find anything that’s excluded from points earning.

Having said that I’m super-cautious with the HSBC cards. They are trigger happy with source of funds checks and other enquiries, and my business is tied up with them. Like Amex I value the relationship and don’t want to loose access to facilities, even temporarily. Barclays, etc, are more easily replaced in my life.

Does applying for the other cards to downgrade trigger another credit check?

based on the alert I just got from Experian for an upgrade, yes.

Datapoint: declined! That’s after a document check of my income by HSBC (which all comes from a company which banks with HSBC). Just had a new mortgage too. Go figure. 🙄

That’s bad. It’s been mentioned quite a few times here that in the current environment, nobody can expect that upgrading, downgrading or churning in the expectation of getting a new application approved as it might have been in the past will remain the case.

Did you apply soon after the re-mortgage?

Three months. Seems reasonable to me.

Indeed, and I’ve repeated the warnings. Just didn’t think it would apply to *me*! I’ve not held the WE for several years, and I’m hardly a serial churner of anything else.

@memesweeper In the good old days, which sadly ended with my HSBC Christmas email, I’m very sure that my Relationship Manager’s assistant could have fixed this. There was not a single thing at HSBC she didn’t seem to know how to wangle. This included my business bank account which technically she had nothing to do with and was meant to be online/phone only. Sadly she has been moved to a different role and has been replaced with another one of these fellows who wants a meeting or Zoom call to discuss my investment objectives.

In other HSBC news, they appear to have formally ceased their mid level Jade status. It isn’t clear if they are stopping it or just dumping me. But given that I’m keeping most of the (few) benefits, now called “legacy jade” I think they’ve realised the numbers didn’t add up but don’t want to provoke the customer base.

It does seem that HSBC are trying to remove as much human interaction from their processes as possible with the exception of trying to sell you investment advice. It’s par for the course really but it seems that algorithms rule the roost now. I miss the good old days such as when I got a mortgage with them in 2007 and the Aussie mortgage guy told me “you’re totally going to get rejected and then I’ll press some buttons and override that nonsense”.

He got let go several years later as they continued to “centralise applications”. Loads of people from my office used him as he just talked common sense and had a 100% success rate in predicting offer levels.

    Sad face.

Oh indeed, and to my shame I have helped banks replace decision making people with algorithms in the lending process. I remember one project early in my career when we were replacing, I don’t know, maybe two dozen staff — all of whom were being kept on — and I asked why bother with an expensive IT system. “consistency” was the reply.

Sorry I did’t mean to press report! Just wanted to say mine has not arrived.

That’s so annoying, neither has mine.
I had complained and received a refund of the annual fee. I also received a call promising that the 40k points will post by end of Feb….

I called them a couple weeks back when I had some free time, I was promised a call back as soon as there is an update. Not even a time line. Needless to say no one has called me back (yet).

Just wanted to mention that despite lots of previous reports to the contrary, I appear to have been very lucky and had a very smooth experience downgrading from the paid Premier WE to the free Premier card.

Called the Premier support line last week and they posted out the relevant form – dropped it off at an HSBC branch on Monday and as of today (Wednesday) the change has reflected in my online banking and I’ve been able to add the new card to Apple Pay.

I thought the new procedure was to apply for the downgraded card and then cancel the WE ? surely they’ve not gone back to a paper and post system?

Did the same two weeks ago. Called, received a form via post to fill in after 5 days. Returned the form and got confirmation another 5 days later. Was then able to add the new card on Apple Pay. Still waiting for the physical card.

It might be smoother than before but I certainly wouldn’t call this “a very smooth experience” personally. I downgraded my BA Amex card a while ago and it was 3 clicks on their portal, I had the new card on Apple Pay a few hours later and the physical card in the post literally the following day. That’s a smooth experience.

I think HSBC has always had a rather antiquated paper-based system sadly! Definitely no need to re-apply / cancel however.

You raise a good point and HSBC’s service isn’t remotely close to Amex. However given the multiple reports in this thread of support agents not knowing how to sort this, delays with dispatching forms and then weeks/months to actually action the product transfer, I was thinking I’d got off lightly! New physical card arrived yesterday (3 days after dropping the form into a branch).

Why does the free card version offer additional insurance on purchases, but not the paid one?

Many thanks! Just done this myself.

Form arrived is actually an ‘upgrade to premier cc form’ for another card (rather than a downgrade from WE form). Opted to take it into a branch instead of posting – was scanned in & actioned same day and within 24 hours card has changed in app. Just waiting for physical card to arrive now.

Interestingly the manager I spoke to in branch said you can use reward points to pay the annual fee – but only if you ring up.

Still for me, it isn’t as competitive as other Mastercards now…

    Hi All

I’ve recently got the WE card and I’ve got two totally daft questions, so sorry in advance

1 Where do you see your points total – can’t see it anywhere on my HSBC online banking?
    2. When I applied online I expected to have the option to apply for a supplementary card for my wife, but either missed it or I didn’t get the option. How do you apply for a supplementary card?

    Thanks

Coming to the end of 2 years with this card and just checking on the process and how to ensure I get the second and final lot of 40,000 points for spending £10k without having to wait and pay for a third year. I’ve seen some posts on here about completing a physical form to downgrade. Is that the way to do it? Thanks

    1. I can see it on the app, you click into the card and expand the middle section before the transaction I think.

    2. I think it is a form, the sup card is not free, might be easier just for one of you to use the physical card and the other to add it to your phone wallet if you don’t need a statement showing the spending separately/identifiably.

I downgraded after year one, was assured that I would get my points for spending 12k, still waiting for them. It has probably been a year if I read back on the thread. I might chase when I am bored.
