Forums Payment cards American Express ‘Upgrade to The Platinum Card, receive 80,000 points’

I took the card out a few days back and spoke to CS to get the offers loaded but I see the Harvey Nichols one expires June end – shouldn’t I have gotten one for this year that expires December 31 and then another one next year for June?

Poorly worded offer and Amex Tech can’t cope with the recent change (i.e. offer ending in H1 next year).

Spend your £50 before 31/12/24 and the offer won’t drop off, it will stay there until 30/06/24 where you have another opportunity to spend £50before it finally drops off.

So if I get this right, I can spend £50 before 31st December for a full cashback and then another £50 till 30/6/25 for another £50 – thats a total of £100 between the two, or did I misunderstand? Thanks for clarifying.

Yes. £50 statement credit for transactions showing before 311224 and then it resets for the last time to be used by 300625.

I’ve had the upgrade bonus previously but that was 5+ years ago and it was Gold Charge – Plat Charge. Hoping that doesn’t disqualify me from a bonus. I suspect not but any thoughts?

Did you try in the end? I upgraded probably in 2019, contemplating the gamble.

Re: question if you get dining credit twice if downgrade / upgrade happened in one year, I can confirm you don’t. That was an unintentional experiment on my part as I simply forgot I used it in January! Was surprised to get only something like £2.30 back in statement credit on my £150 spend (in Ivy vouchers), before I realised that I spent almost the whole amount back in January…

On the Deliveroo offer still being on upgraded Gold Cards – looks like Amex has caught onto this?

My Deliveroo offer has dropped off my Platinum card. Best to check if it is still on their before intending to use it.

I thought I was getting a free coffee and cake courtesy of Deliveroo…but I guess you win some and lose some!

Hi everyone, I just upgraded from Gold to Platinum.
I didn’t get my physical platinum card yet and I was just wondering if anyone knows if I can still pay with my gold card and get Harvery Nichols £50 back ?

Should be ok BUT you will need to chat with Amex to get the offer added to your account first. It’s not automatic.

As a data point, I got my 80,000 bonus today after hitting the 10k spend a few days ago.

I didn’t have a counter or anything like I did with the BAPP spend target.

Thank you Rob for your message.
I confirm it actually worked out. I contacted Amex and they added the HN offer. I then made a purchase using my Gold card on 30th December and £50 credit came on 2nd Jan. I then spoke today with Amex and they confirmed that the £50 credit refer to 2024 therefore I still have another £50 credit to use in the next 6 month.

With a new card, do you have to phone up to get dining and HN offers added ? I know the dining is due mid Jan, but will it be automatic ? Seems a PIA and if everyone has to phone in. Joining the Avis and Hertz was a pain, and whilst confirmation given , the site has not given the ‘green tick’ . Is this normal?

They will appear in the end, just depends if you want them NOW. As it’s now Jan there isn’t the same panic as December.

Thanks @Rob. If only BA could learn from the excellent personal CS we receive from HfP! Prompt responses, loyal to its readership. Fair, factual and contactable.

Why on earth doesn’t BA run changes like the recent FFP fiasco past you for comment? Might save them a migraine ….and give you a bit of a headache!

So when this 80k offer came up, I thought I must about just be due out of my fallow period. A quick chat with Amex confirmed yes! And also I could get a referral from player 2 and get a whopping 100,000 MR’s!

Today I went on the chat to check on my progress towards the 10k spend and they dropped the bombshell. It had only been 23 months since my last MR earning card, the previous agent was wrong, and I won’t be eligible for any SUB. Cue anger, frustration, resignation etc, mostly at myself. Why didn’t I keep better records? What a crap start to 2025, and now the fallow period has to start again. Not before I nab the Harvey Nicks and dining credits though…

I have raised a complaint about the incorrect advice received, but am not expecting anywhere near the £5k value I would have gotten from the MR’s. Stoopid, stoopid…

Oh, and to top things off I’ve just had a fraudulent transaction on my Curve card, so need to sort that out. Grrrr

I’ve got no advice on this issue but surely if it was Amex who gave the wrong advice then thy should honour it? I would push hard on this given you acted on their confirmation.

Also perhaps the bit I’m more interested in is how were you planning on getting £5k value out of 100,000 MR points? 🙂

    phantomchickenz 575 posts

It’s been discussed quite a few times on here before that an Amex agent’s word doesn’t hold much weight when it comes to these kind of things. I might get a cursory £50 or something, but will wait and see what they come back with. Can’t believe how daft I was.

The 100k MR’s were going to become 100k Avios, and you’re right I got my numbers wrong (not for the first time it seems!), it’s more like £3k. They were going to go towards a Qatar redemption to NZ, where 90k plus ~£500 taxes gets a J seat that currently retails at about £3,500.

    phantomchickenz 575 posts

Actually a redemption seat is closer to a fully flex business class seat, so it’s closer to £4k in value.

    Rui N. 1,021 posts

That’s made up value though, unless you were willing to pay that amount of money out of pocket.

(Sorry for your situation, that sucks greatly)

    phantomchickenz 575 posts

It’s very real for me – I will be paying it if I can’t find an alternative.

    JDB 6,255 posts

@phantomchickenz – this situation isn’t good but also isn’t necessarily irretrievable, although I’m not sure rushing out to use the benefits will help your case one jot. In principle, there are two separate issues you have suffered and Amex wins published cases on this quite regularly but we have had reports here of them relenting from time to time and playing nicely is much more likely to yield a positive result than getting aggressive or going to the FOS.

Obviously the Amex agent misinformed you and that shouldn’t have happened and they will offer some sort of nominal cash compensation for the error. However, the fact you had not reached the 24 months looms large and can’t be got around. Rather than rushing out to use the benefits which is a tacit acceptance of the status quo, I would have been asking them, on the basis of the agent’s misrepresentation, to cancel the card and reset the clock to where it was, because only that puts you back in the position you were in before the agent’s error. That’s a fairly basic and reasonable ask.

You knew you were close to the 24 months, but because you also know there can be different dates used, you took the trouble to check with the only source of definitive information – Amex – and acted in reliance on an authorised representative’s clear and unambiguous representation to your detriment. You are therefore asking either for Amex manually to credit the welcome bonus when you hit the spend threshold so you can continue to enjoy using the card or to cancel it in a way that you can reapply with a welcome bonus after the clear 24 months. You want to add of course that you cancelled the card because of xyz good reasons (to do with the card and/or your personal situation) but with the new dining and other benefits you now wish to hold the card again and resolve Amex’s unfortunate error in a pragmatic, fair and amicable manner. You can do it!

Thanks @JDB. The ‘reset’ option had crossed my mind, but I had been of the view that approach had been tried and failed by others on here in the past – the system is gospel and can’t be messed with. I could have that entirely wrong though? I’ll get in touch with them and clarify that this would also be considered acceptable resolution of my issue. Thanks!

It’s a 100k letter, so don’t rush it and word it very carefully! You always sound very reasonable and measured when you post, so I’m sure that will come across and stand you in good stead. It really is all in the asking.

Sorry to hear, I had a similar case in the summer albeit a smaller bonus. Was awarded half the bonus for agent error. As JDB said there wasn’t much point going to FOS as they just quote 24 months in terms regardless of what agent says

Spoke to a lovely lady at Amex today (who interestingly also couldn’t see me holding any cards in the last 24 months) and asked her to close my existing complaint. I have now sent off a carefully worded letter and will hope for the best.

Interesting to hear your experience @harley, there is hope!

I’ll let you know how I get on.

Good luck; interested to see how you get on. If it’s any help, to manage my card eligibility dates I use my secure Roboform password manager to create a note for the amex cards, with relevant dates. Just referred back to it as part of my application the same as yours, to snag the 100K SUB now that I am eligible again. Became eligible back in December but wanted to time it well for the spend target. I also keep the paper confirmation they send at account closure, but prefer the Roboform info as it’s easier to access.
It’s also telling me I am elgible again for the BA Premium Plus from 20th March 2025.

I just have an Excel file with all my credit cars, open and close date. Also good for nostalgia 😀
When I close a relevant one (e.g. starting my 2-year ineligibility period for BAPP), I put an entry on Google Calendar for 2 years plus a few days (just in case). This way if a new offer comes along I just need to search “amex” or “bapp” on Google Calendar and I can see how far away I am from being able to take advantage.

Apologies if this has been asked before…but does anyone know if foreign spend is included towards the £10k spend?
