GOOD NEWS: IHG Rewards Club is extending your hotel elite status to January 2022

IHG Rewards Club has finally seen the light and is joining Hilton and Marriott in extending your elite status automatically by 12 months.

Your elite status will automatically be carried over for the whole of 2021 and your benefits will carry on until January 2022 when the annual status reset happens.

Even better news for Spire Elite members

The news is even better for top tier Spire Elite members.  (The full list of IHG Rewards Club tiers and tier benefits is here.)

IHG Rewards Club extends elite status to 2021

You will automatically receive ANOTHER ‘choice’ benefit allowing you to claim either 25,000 free IHG Rewards Club points or gift Platinum Elite status to a friend.

Please note that this is not active now.  It will take IHG a few weeks to extend memberships and, for Spire Elite members, attach the new ‘choice’ benefit to your account.

Ambassador free night vouchers are also extended

If you have InterContinental Ambassador status, your weekend free night voucher has been extended by three months.

This only applies to members on the books as of 15th March 2020.

IHG had already announced that it was extending Ambassador memberships by three months but had been refusing to budge on the free night vouchers.

IHG is still reducing the elite status criteria for 2021

If you don’t have IHG Rewards Club status at the moment, or want to move up a level, IHG Rewards Club is still keeping its lowered thresholds in place.

Take a look at this chart (click here to see the original):

IHG Rewards Club extends elite status to 2021

Spire Elite is cut from 75,000 base points to 55,000 base points, or from 75 nights to 55 nights.

Given that you will receive the 25,000 points ‘elite choice’ benefit for achieving Spire Elite, it is worth pushing for if you are getting close.

Full details of these changes are on the official IHG travel advisory page, which is here.

Not at all bothered about IHG status extension as easily earn Spire via CC spend. The extra 25k points is nice though.

Will be interesting to see if AMB vouchers and status get extended any further, if we’re all stuck unable to travel until next year then there’s not going to be much time to use them!

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I’m wondering if IHG have made a mistake with quoting the extra 25k now. If they extend your Spire status till 2021 then you will receive another 25k next year. I’m still hoping on an additional bonus this year but not holding my breath…

  • Matt says:

So as the IHG Travel Advisory page says

“We have provided a complimentary three-month membership extension to members of our InterContinental Ambassador program (on 15 March 2020)”

(ie “we _have_” not “we will”…) does this mean it should this be showing on my membership already? My expiry date in the app was – and still is – 01/02/21, so it hasn’t been extended by 3 months. (And my free ambassador weekend certificate hasn’t been extended either… AND my free night from the premium IHG credit card hasn’t showed up either (and Creation haven’t replied to my query about it), even though it’s now over a month since my anniversary date…)

    • Lyn says:

They’ve been updating accounts over the last few days. My Ambassador membership was extended by 3 months today. It did not show yesterday.

  • PaulW says:

My old expiry said 31/12 2021. Which I got spire via the credit card mainly in November 19. Do us that going to change 31/12 2022?

  • Evie says:

Has there been any indication if Royal Ambassador membership also be extended.

    • ChrisC says:

An RA friend got an email yesterday about his RA.

No doubt you’ll get an email as well in due course.

  • Geoggy says:

I had already hit the 55k points and my account says I am Spire Elite, but no sign of the 25k bonus.

If I click Elite benefits all I see is a Hertz upgrade.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

I had that also, i conetcted CS and they managed to get the new bonuses applied to my account. I thought reading other comments this had now been resolved but looks not for everyone.

  • Scott says:

I have 44 nights already this year and requalified for Spire half way through last year, my first year of Spire.
Would have probably qualified again by now if it hasn’t been for this virus.

I only got the offer of the 25k points when I first got Spire. Not seen it since.
Still got the original Hertz whatever offer that is of no interest to me.

  • JAMES says:

This is the decent thing to do. Bravo IHG

    Well done.

  • JAMES says:

Anyone know if Qatar are likely to postpone the expiry of QMiles ?

    • G Schaefer says:

I seem to remember someone on FT contacting QR and having been told no.
