Avios flight cancelled? You can rebook for ANY date, even if Avios seats are not available

We haven’t covered the great British Airways refund saga for some time, but we are returning to it today.

There is some good, potentially great, news.

If your Avios flight is cancelled, you can now rebook your trip via ba.com for any date even if Avios seats are not available.

None of the HfP team have any ‘cancelled but not refunded’ Avios flights at present so we haven’t been able to test this personally.  However, this is what we understand happens.

Simply go into ‘Manage My Booking’ and select the rebooking option.  You should be offered a flight on the same route on any day where a service is due to operate, up to 12 months from the date your ticket was originally issued.

This rule could catch you out, since you cannot move your flight more than a year from, give or take a few days, the day you made your booking. If you booked 355 days ahead then you’re stuffed.

We are still unsure of the exact rules.  However:

if you are using a 2-4-1 voucher, it seems that you must still be operating within the validity dates of the voucher

if your trip was on off-peak dates, you will only be offered off-peak dates to rebook

If you don’t see this for any reason, you will need to call up and potentially quote the rule change referenced above.

There must, obviously, be cash seats available for the flight you want.  You are rebooked into a cash ‘bucket’ which may even earn you Avios and tier points back.  A reader sent me an example where he was offered a BA codeshare on Loganair for rebooking, which cannot ever be booked with Avios.

Remember that this policy only applies if your flight is cancelled and you have not selected a ‘Book with Confidence’ voucher instead.   If your flight is not cancelled but you no longer wish to travel, your only option is to take the ‘Book with Confidence’ voucher or a standard refund, paying the £35 fee.

This new policy is obviously open to abuse but it is a generous move by British Airways and hopefully it will be used as intended.

This definitely does not work for me. Had an Avios flight cancelled yesterday. I do have the re-booking option but it gives me a full year calendar with no indication of availability which you have to try each day to see what is available. Days with cash only flights say no availability and days with avios availability are the only ones that can be booked.

  • Paul Morris says:

I originally booked a CW seat to Santiago, Chile on 23/7/19 for 5/6/20, I then later upgraded this to First when the seat was opened up, would my rebooking options be based around the date the flight was booked or when the upgrade change was applied? This was using a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher.

  • Olive Lee says:

I had 2 avios+cash flights cancelled by BA, I went for a refund route rather than rebooking. After almost 4 weeks I received avios back to my BA account, however no cash refunded to my bank account since then.
I just phoned BA call center several times, but apparently the calls were ended automatically if you went for enquiries about refund. In case if no one share it yet, I found there is a live chatbot on COVID-19 page, you just keep keying in “Please transfer me to a live agent” then it will have a real person to deal with your enquiry. Much quicker than waiting on the call.

This also works for OnBusiness bookings – I managed to rebook our Billund flights in June to August bank holiday without issues. Dates all the way to Feb next year were available, but I thought I’d roll the dice.

  • Martin says:

What numbers are you using to call BA? Whenever I call on 080727800, no matter which option I choose, I simply get an automated message and get cut off. I have been trying for days to get refunds on Aviios flights cancelled over two weeks ago.

    • Martin says:

I have finally managed to talk to somone who hopefully has sorted this out!

  • Gareth Hill says:

What happens if my ticket (Capetown ) was booked 355 days in advance

  • Scott says:

I had a flight cancelled for the RETURN leg of a 2-4-1 voucher (6 months gap), so the outbound was used (LHR-SIN in CW). The voucher expiry date was March this year, but was offered the chance to extend to the return leg by 6 months, but it needed availability. If I change again, I will lose the 2-4-1 voucher element

  • David says:

I booked a First return in April, when there was lots of Avios availability, for my son as a treat to travel back to the UK from Sydney. Flight not surprisingly was cancelled this morning and I have managed to move the booking forward to next March, by which time hopefully he will be allowed to leave Australia. Very happy with this response from BA. Would have been impossible in normal times.
