Where does Qatar Airways fly from in the UK and what business class will you get?

The big news this week has been the launch of Avios as the currency of Privilege Club, the Qatar Airways frequent flyer programme.

This opens up a lot of opportunities, which we will be exploring in multiple articles over the coming weeks.

Once you’ve read the three articles above, you’ll see that redeeming your Avios for flights on Qatar Airways is now very attractive.

Flying with Qatar Airways to Australia (multiple destinations) or New Zealand in business class, for example, requires 180,000 Avios and under £600 of taxes.

Compare this to BA, on the off chance you could find availability to Sydney, your only Australasian option. It would require 300,000 Avios and around £1,000 of taxes on peak dates. The Qatar Airways product is also far superior.

Qatar Airways can also offer you Avios access to places which British Airways does not fly, or where redemption seats are hard to get – the Maldives, Seychelles, Bali, Zanzibar, Colombo, Phuket, Manila etc etc.

With this in mind, I wanted to do a summary today of Qatar Airways departure points in the UK and what business class products are available.

Where does Qatar Airways fly from in the UK?

Qatar Airways has just announced that it is returning to London Gatwick from 5th June.

The flight will operate alongside the current daily Gatwick to Doha flight offered by British Airways, which has a joint venture with Qatar Airways on the route.

From 5th June, Qatar Airways will be offering the following flights from the UK:

  • 35 flights per week from Heathrow
  • 7 flights per week from Gatwick
  • 18 flights per week from Manchester
  • 7 flights per week from Edinburgh

This is a total of 67 departures per week. There are also regular flights from Dublin.

Will my Qatar Airways flight have Qsuite?

The Qatar Airways ‘halo product’ is Qsuite, the revolutionary ‘with a door’ business class seat which is generally regarded as the best business class product in the world.

Qsuite is not an ‘off the shelf’ product, unlike most business class seats, but was designed from scratch to meet Qatar Airways specifications. The most radical feature is that two adjacent suites can be merged to form a double bed:

There is no easy way to guarantee Qsuite, although the Qatar Airways website does highlight it during the booking process if you book direct. We can tell you which aircraft types are most likely to have it, but even if your seat map shows Qsuite there is always a risk of a late aircraft change.

Of course, irrespective of which seat you get, you will receive the same high quality food and drink service. It’s also worth remembering that – whilst it does not have Qsuite – the A380 fleet does have a very attractive bar to make up for it:

Let’s run through the fleet.

Boeing 787-9

This is the newest aircraft in the Qatar Airways fleet, only introduced in 2022. It is not currently flying to London. It has an entirely new business class seat which, whilst also having a door, is fundamentally different to Qsuite due to the narrower Boeing 787-9 cabin:

Airbus A350-1000

All of these aircraft have Qsuite.

Around 1/3rd of these aircraft are believed to have Qsuite. My review of Qatar Airways business class on the A350-900 is here.

Boeing 777-200/300

These aircraft are being progressively refurbished with Qsuite, with around 75% now believed to be complete. This is Jamie’s 2018 review of an non-refurbished Boeing 777-300ER which he flew from Bali.

Airbus A380

These aircraft do not have Qsuite. Here is my 2016 review of Qatar Airways A380 business class which has the reverse herringbone seat (no doors) used on the Boeing 787-8:

It’s also worth sharing this review of ‘regional First Class’ (regional aircraft are two-class, Economy and First) which is what you would get if you flew from Doha to Dubai for example.

If you want to fly in Qatar Airways First Class on a long-haul flight, you are restricted to the A380 fleet. Here is my review of Qatar Airways A380 First Class and, erm, the First Class transit bus!

    Can I get a bit of clarity re: lounge access with Qatar? Flying with the family BRU-DOH-KUL in May on a P fare, although I am BA Gold. My understanding is that P no longer has lounge access but does that change with status in the ‘official’ DOH lounges? Thanks.

      I think you need to use the non Qatar lounge in Doha, but you can use the lounges at outstations

      Al Mourjan is for business fares at R and above, status doesn’t get you in.
      You’re status should get you into one of the other lounges e.g. Oryx.
      Check lounge access rules on oneworld website.
      For KUL arrival I’m planning on doing the RTK test whilst at KLIA (so its done and out the way) – just need the Doctors2U website to update with the option, still only shows PCR.

      It actually depends on when you booked your ticket! It you booked P fares prior to 4 September 21, you will still have access to Al Mourjan. If not, then it’s the secondary lounges. It’s on the FAQ in QR’s website when they launched the new fares!

        I got into Al Mourjan lounge as BA Gold on Economy flights, booked in November 2021, travelling in Dec & January…

    I think we can measures in weeks, if not days, the longevity of the 180,000 Avios deals to Australia. If nothing else BA will not wish this to continue and will be lobbying hard for equivalence

      Won’t be happening. It is two legs remember – the only way to make it 300k is to increase London to Doha to a stupid level and that kills everything.

      Availability will dilute to almost nothing, as was pre-Avios integration. With the switch to Avios, QR opened the doors – but that’s not going to last. Pre Avios, it was very very tough to find standard availability to Australia and New Zealand.

          It will even out when people realise that you have to pay $280 to cancel a return flight apparently (4 sectors x $70) as opposed to £35 on BA.

          Still lot of good things about the change, but less exciting than it appears to be.

      Interestingly BA doesn’t show many of the QR award availability specifically for Australia, I noticed! If you look at QR’s website is there and bookable.

    Is there any way to use your BA companion voucher with Qatar or is that only valid if you spend your points with BA?

      It’s not primarily to do with how you book it – the voucher is only valid on BA aircraft, or “metal” as real AV geeks call it!

        “Metal” is starting to seem inappropriate, with the newest air frames apparently largely made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer, with some assorted metal bits here and there.

    Hi everyone,

    I am trying to book a gold priority reward. Spoke with 2 agents and both only wanted to use the 1£ taxe option with double avios.

    Is this the new rule ?

      We ran an article on this a couple of months ago. Sean Doyle himself said that it is a mistake and call centre agents are acting incorrectly and you should push to override it. I do get occasional emails from readers who have managed to get the old pricing.

    Anyone know what the situation is if you cancel a QR redemption, ie are you charged a fee in line with the £35 BA does? I’m sure I read somewhere on the site (that I now can’t find!), that you lose your avios.

      Apparently for 4 sectors (one return flight via Doha) the cancellation fee is $280. You get your Avios back.

        I’m still waiting for the official line on this. However, you can book via BA for a marginally higher fuel charge (no difference if starting outside the UK) if you want to lock in the BA cancellation fee.

    We are travelling Qatar Oslo-Doha-BNE next week and now Qatar and BA have teamed up avios, is it worth keeping our BA avios account attached or change it to Qatar privilege miles to collect or doesn’t matter as now interchangeable? Only booked last week so missed out on 10,000 extra avios but hey ho.

      Assuming you’re not bothered about tier points you need to look up the Avios earn rate in both programmes for QR flights based on your ticket type.
