Bits: IHG UK sale at 9am, triple Avios registration hiccups, HfP lounge review links

News in brief:

IHG flash sale starts at 9am

IHG, owner of the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental and Indigo brands amongst others, is launching a 72-hour flash sale at 9am today.

This will ONLY cover hotels in the UK.

I don’t have any further information except that the discounts will be “amazing” (says IHG) and that you need to stay between 4th January and 27th February 2017.

The landing page for the sale is here.  The InterContinental O2, pictured below, may or may not be included.

As the sale requires you to be an IHG Rewards Club (free to join) member to book, I would imagine – but check the small print – that rooms are guaranteed to qualify to earn points and stay credit.  This could make it a cheap way to tick off some of your targets for the Spring ‘Accelerate’ promotion, especially if you are targeted for an extra bonus for a stay in January.

Registration issues for ‘triple Avios’

I wrote about the new British Airways ‘triple Avios’ promotion yesterday.

Many of us were getting odd messages when registering. During the morning, BA changed the website to say that UK and US residents must wait until Thursday to register.  If your BA account lives elsewhere you can register now.

If you tried to register yesterday and got the confusing ‘Thank you for registering / you are not registered’ message, try again tomorrow.

Going forward, you can easily find a link to a UK lounge review by going here.  I haven’t included our overseas reviews because they are a rather eclectic selection.  The UK listing is fairly comprehensive for the South East – I apologise for the weaker coverage elsewhere.

  • LOUNGE HUNTER says:

You have missed out on the T5 BA super secret Platinum lounge but if I tell you I have to ……..

    OMG no ………..

  • Si says:

Hi, in march, flying BA F from T5 for first time. From article it looks like wife and I can get into Concord lounge and Galleries Lounge, which is all very exciting to a couple of porpers like us (who have done the hard avios-graft following advice from this excellent website!)

Questions – so we don’t look out of place – are: all food and drink etc complementary? If can get a spot, is spa treatment complementary?

I know can prob easily get the info off website, but looking for the insider info, tips and hints 🙂

    P.s. Happy New Year!

    • Andrew says:

Hi Si. Congrats on your first First. Yes the food, drink and spa treatments are free.

For the spa treatments, you can book them 28 days in advance if you’re in First – just call them or use the YouFirst form on ba.com. They book up though (on our flight on 28 December, I asked on the day bookings opened for a treatment in a 3-hour window and they only had one left). So, get in quick as soon as they open for bookings or be prepared to turn up on the day and see if they have walk-up appointments.

    • Si says:

Amazing! Thank you for all the prompt advice. I’ll be straight on website 28 days prior to flight and I’ll see what spa appointments are available for the wife. This may prove to be our only ever F departer flight so def keen to make the most of it.

      Thanks again 🙂

      • Genghis says:

There are spa options for men too! Treat yourself.

      • Clive says:

We had our first F departure recently – got to the Concorde room as early as possible to have breakfast and lunch and massage at Spa 🙂 I recommend the Fusion Fizz cocktail 🙂

    • Aceman says:

If you’re in F you’ll be able to get into any of the BA lounges but you’ll only want to bother with the CCR. Hope you’re first F is from T5 though!

      • Genghis says:

The CX F lounge in T3 reviewed recently doesn’t seem too shabby

  • reddot says:

I sometimes redeem EDI-LON flights with Flybe due to better timing. Am I right that the BA lounge cannot be used?

  • Alex says:

Just took a flight from LHR T2, Was VERY disappointed by my visit this time to Plaza Premium. Outrageously dirty floors, tables, sofas. Also lots of flies everywhere!! Hoping it’s the remnants of Christmas and new year revellers as its been great before.

    • Roger I says:

Hi, Alex. I totally agree, having heard so much in advance here and elsewhere.

It may be OK off-peak but when we arrived at about 11:30 most seats in the lounge area were occupied and every table in the dining area was occupied except one – the one with accumulated debris from other tables. The food wasn’t great – the chicken in the chicken tikka had only met the sauce seconds before and was tasteless, and the rice was cold. i didn’t bother with the Christmas pudding slices.

      Disappointing.

  • Neil says:

Flying to JFK on Sunday with BA in J out of T5 (part-Avios redemption made before I got into this “hobby”), so should be popping into the Galleries lounge then. Will try and take a few pictures surreptitiously whilst in there.

    • Rob says:

I don’t need BA Heathrow (or JFK) pics – I can do those myself at any time. I only realised yesterday that I have never done Galleries Club, probably because I am there so often I dont think about it.

Happy to receive stuff on, say, Belfast, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford.

      • Graeme says:

Rob, I can look at doing the Aberdeen lounges for you. I’m not scheduled to go through the BA loung until late May however. There is also a small Swissport Lounge I can review for you.

The airport is going through a transformation and both lounges will be moved to a new upstairs area later this year however. Is it worth it, or rather wait?

        • Rob says:

Thanks Graeme. If they are being resited then I would wait, as the reviews will have a shelf life of years once posted.

  • Ro says:

Very OT but has anyone had any luck claiming compensation from Iberia? Made a claim on resolver and all ive got back is a message along the lines of “thank you for contacting us. We do our best”. Basically nothing else. No offer for the 600 euro or anything. Wrote back asking for it about 2 weeks ago and still no response.

  • Genghis says:

As reported last night, the Triple Avios promo is now open for registration

  • James Ward says:

I can do you a piece on LBA’s embarrassment of a lounge this Friday if you want.

    • Rob says:

Please do James, that would be great. Can’t see either of us going there in the near future (or far future!).

      • James Ward says:

Will do. Could have done Belfast City for you a couple of days ago when we were re-routed following missed connection. BA lounge was closed but looked nice through the windows. Didn’t bother with the genetic lounge as we didn’t want to waste our Lounge Club freebies.

    • Our_Kid says:

Bit harsh! The Yorkshire Lounge is a nice place!

      • James Ward says:

Yeah, maybe it was a bit harsh. But it’s hardly luxurious. Doesn’t even have its own toilet – you have to leave the lounge to use the grotty ones in the main terminal. Yuk!

        • xcalx says:

Yeah, harsh indeed, not the only lounge you will have to leave to use the loo.

          • the real harry says:

and let’s not forget those grotty public loos are seen as pretty good in ‘outhouse’ Yorkshire

      • James Ward says:

I eat my words. Having assessed the lounge more consciously in order to write some notes for Rob, I’ve decided it’s not half bad. I guess I was comparing it to amazing spaces like the VS Clubhouse and Qatar business lounge in Doha. Of course that’s a stupid comparison. A small regional airport will never match up to those lounges. It also turns out that those really terrible toilets are currently being refurbished. It’s a shame there’s no natural light in the business side. I do think they could improve this with slightly less harsh artificial lighting. But other than that, I’m going to stop slagging it off.
